Younger Recap: 5.06 ‘Sex, Liza and Rock & Roll’

Younger 506 Sex Liza and Rock and Roll

Younger 506 Sex Liza and Rock and Roll

It looks like a pivotal moment between Charles and Liza draws near, while Kelsey has a few decisions (men) to deal with!

On last week’s episode of YoungerLiza was almost outed by freelance writer Don who she was seeing after he saw Liza’s real and fake ID cards. Meanwhile, Kelsey was invited to a function with Jake, which resulted in the pair kissing, and for Josh, he almost made the decision to leave Brooklyn behind but decided to stay after Liza’s speech, and most likely for her too.

Big News For Maggie

the episode kicks off with Maggie yelling for Liza because she’s just been selected for the Whitney Biennial, which is the “super bowl” of the art world. Diana asks Liza about Maggie’s news as she’s a Fellow, and it seems she will be bringing Enzo to the cocktail party. Charles then turns up to discuss an issue with Diana about an upcoming memoir as they haven’t received any pages. Liza tries to butt in, except Charles somewhat ignores her. During a Skype call, they speak with Chrissie (played by Gina Gershon) about her memoir and it seems she has written it all, but she asks for Charles to come pick it up from her.

He heads to Chrissie’s house on Shelter Island where she asks Charles to taste her “booch” and much to Charles’ relief, it’s only kombucha. Unfortunately picking up the manuscript isn’t so easy as she takes him on a tour of her mansion, which includes guns, skulls, and $10000 dildos from the pharaohs apparently.

Cocktails and Cockblocking

Maggie, Josh, and Liza attend the cocktail party, and Maggie is taken aback by it all. It seems Diana will be heading to Staten Island to stay at Enzo’s, and she has a full suitcase including sheets. She then introduces herself to Maggie to which Maggie replies “I had no idea you were so chic” and results in Liza getting a glare from Diana. Diana then receives a text from Charles saying he is going to have to stay the night, so Diana sends Liza on her way to help get the manuscript.

Charles is not thrilled to see Liza and neither is Chrissie as she’s worried Liza is cockblocking because she wants to “bang his brains out”. Chrissie, Charles, and Liza are sitting around drinking with Liza rocking out to one of Chrissie’s songs. Charles asks Liza not to leave, so Liza asks about the book and it’s brought out. However, Chrissie isn’t ready to give it up yet, which causes Liza to suggest a diversion and then run. Thankfully, Chrissie passes out and that’s the end of that for the night. Charles and Liza head to their rooms when Liza asks when he’ll trust her again or to yell at her—except he just says good night. He does try to knock on her door, but can’t bring himself to do it.

The next morning at Enzo’s, he introduces Diana to his chef and she asks for poached eggs. “More like over easy” is the response in Italian, and Enzo then explains that she is his mother also. Diana assumes his mother lives with him, but he actually lives with her… “My boy brought home a raisin instead of a grape.” Much to their surprise, Diana responds back in Italian and this makes the mother happy, to a degree.

Kelsey and Her Men

Zane is bored by the first chapter of Jake’s so he calls him from Kelsey’s work phone, which requires Jake to cover his ass a little when he answers with “I was just thinking about you”. Zane asks for energy, humour, and scandal, but Jake asks what Kelsey thinks and this makes Zane a little more aggressive in his approach. According to Zane, he’s playing bad cop. Later on in a hotel room, Kelsey says Jake’s voice on the podcast is charming and funny, which is what she wants his book to sound like. Jake is a little distracted by her, however, she says after the book is done they can talk. Two seconds later, they’re rushing back through the hotel door kissing.

Kelsey and Zane go over Jake’s revisions and they are both much happier with the chapter, however, Zane talks about Jake being dull and the way he looks at Kelsey. Naturally she asks what he means, and he says Kelsey isn’t into “nice” followed by what she’s into and… they wind up kissing. Lauren’s super happy by Kelsey’s “walk of fame” and Lauren says not to worry about being with both because guys do it all the time and she can have them both. Josh asks where Liza is and Kelsey explains she is with Charles, which results in a sad expression from Josh.

Who Run The World? Liza.

It seems Charles has left Chrissie’s already, which leads to Liza and Chrissie taking a stroll holding hands. Liza asks why she won’t give up the book and she tells Chrissie about how her music helped her, and the book could do the same. Chrissie then asks if Liza wants her boobs signed, and she agrees. Next thing we know, Liza is storming into Charles’ office in a stunning silver power suit and slams the book on his desk to his surprise.

Overall Thoughts?

I thoroughly enjoyed seeing everyone in this episode, and while it most likely isn’t feasible for every episode, it really does help with flow and consistency, especially when characters such as Charles just don’t appear for a week. It’s interesting to see Liza’s personal and work lives crossing over more with Maggie and Diana meeting this episode, and perhaps by the end of the season, Liza might come clean to everyone about her age meaning no more “Liza lies”. The end scene was definitely a highlight with Liza storming in wearing that suit and an expression that just reads “I’m done feeling bad and upset”. While on one hand, you can understand the way that Charles is acting, but on the other, Liza was just trying to get a job in an industry that felt she was out-dated, but look at her now! Not that lying is good, but given the chance, people can really shine and surprise you.

Next week’s episode will be a big one with many cast members calling it their favourite episode with it all leading up to this!
