Younger Recap: 5.08 ‘The Bubble’

Younger 5.08 The Bubble

Younger 5.08 The Bubble

Prepare yourself Younger fans, the wait for some real Charles and Liza action is over. After five seasons, the moment many have waited for has finally arrived, and it seems many fans are left feeling… satisfied. But naturally, now that the tension and anticipation has gone, how will the pair go? What challenges await them? We’re certain there will be many of those, as after all, this is a television drama.

During last week’s episode, Kelsey has trouble juggling both Zane and Jake, so she ends it with Zane although Jake sees them kiss and gets Zane thrown off as editor. Meanwhile, Liza and Charles “meet” at a Christmas party where we see Liza and her family perform a song from The Sound of Music, and gradually realises that Liza has done everything for her daughter, which leads to him turning up to her place, apologising, and going in for a big ol’ kiss.

The Big Event

Liza and Charles are out for drinks reminiscing about the first time they saw one another, before we see a montage of moments from their first time together. He drops her off and promises to call her on Christmas Eve, and with the reminder they will see one another again in ten days.

Flash forward ten days where Kelsey and Liza return to work in the new year with a frosty welcome from Zane, a coffee free and potentially grouchy Diana, and a very rugged looking Charles who is now sporting quite the substantial amount of facial hair. After not looking at Liza once, Kelsey says “men who grow beards are hiding something” and Diana in all her great humour responds with “yes, crumbs”. Much to satisfaction of Liza, she receives a text from Charles saying hi. Kelsey then confronts Zane who is angry with her for screwing him and then screwing him over.

Footsies and An Awkward Dinner

Liza knocks at Charles’ office door, and the pair say they’ve missed one another before planning a little rendezvous to meet up at the public library that night. In a meeting with an author named Sophia Bell who says love is fuelled by mystery and that a healthy relationship should feel a little illicit. Naturally this speaks to Charles and Liza, and Charles responds by slightly touching her leg with his fingers and then playing footsies under the table. Afterwards, the pair go on a date and Charles hopes to stay in their bubble just for a little longer, and he takes her to the Sea Glass Carousel.

Lauren is throwing a dinner for a girl that she’s crazy about and since Liza has plans already, it will be just Josh as the other guest until Maggie also turns up with some food to help Lauren impress her date. Lauren rushes to the door… and who walks in? Malkie. The blonde Jewish woman who Maggie used to date. Cue awkwardness. Over dinner, it all comes out when Malkie tells Maggie that she’s a middle-age woman scared to let anyone in and doesn’t ever want to settle. After this, Maggie leaves while Josh and Lauren try to settle things down. Maggie returns to the apartment and Liza begins to tell her about her night when she realises Maggie is upset.

Maggie goes to see Lauren to apologise to her and says that she should continue seeing Malkie, but Lauren believes she should be giving the flowers to Malkie instead. She goes to Malkie’s store and give the flowers to her (which look different to the ones she handed to Lauren might I add) along with an apology. However, Malkie doesn’t think it can change anything. The next day, Maggie and Josh are working on a street project, which happens to be the empty lot right across from Malkie’s store. Maggie proves herself to Malkie with an epic mural, and the pair kiss.

Cooling Things Down

Kelsey meets up with Jake and he reveals that he is apartment hunting and hopefully moving to New York much to Kelsey’s surprise. She then tells Jake she wants to cool things off since she’s developing a pattern and wants to be just his editor for now. At Empirical, Kelsey tells Liza she’s cooled things off with Jake, while also wondering why Charles is in such a great mood. Diana, Liza, and Kelsey’s meeting with Reese’s company is moved to lunch, but Liza has other things on her mind when she receives a text from Charles saying “stairwell?”. Cue a steamy make out session between the pair.

Charles has a lunch with Jake who now thinks that it shouldn’t be printed under such a niche imprint like Millennial, but rather should be published under Empirical… Later on, Charles speaks with Zane about making Jake’s book an Empirical title, however, Zane gives it to Kelsey saying she did it all.

True Love Never Runs Smooth…Especially With A Disgruntled Ex-Wife

Liza and Diana meets with Kiara about how Marriage Vacation is being adapted by Netflix, but they’re stalling about a second season. However, the best person to speak to about it would be Pauline, and it seems she has been invited too. She pitches a second book about divorce as the character finds out her husband is secretly in love with someone else… Who? A two-faced young assistant in the company apparently. Diana believes the character would go for more of an accomplished woman, say a department head? Liza chimes in as Pauline goes on saying that perhaps the assistant was trying to help repair the marriage…but Pauline thinks the character would want revenge.

Pauline calls Charles saying they need to talk… Charles meets up with Liza at their rendezvous point and informs Liza that Pauline wants to make a deal: she’ll keep quiet about them and in return for option to her sequel back. Charles said he will say it is part of their divorce settlement, and he says he is doing it all for them. Charles comes in the next day freshly shaven, and Diana remarks “wonder who he did that for”, earning a sly smile from Liza.

Overall Thoughts?

Wowie! What an episode! After five seasons, we’re throwing away all those looks and moments between Liza and Charles with the deed finally done. It was definitely in contrast with Liza and Josh’s first time, which was fast and hot, while this time with Charles was more sensual and even a little hesitant and awkward, which I think was perfect for the pair. Why? Well there’s been all this build-up between the two and they’ve had issues come their way from Pauline to Josh, and then to Liza’s secret, so for them to finally be completely honest and open with one another, it would definitely cause some nerves.

As for Maggie, I am incredibly happy Malkie is back in the picture as Maggie deserves to finally find some happiness, and hopefully they will be happy with one another this time around.

Then there’s Kelsey. Round of applause for her realising that she’s falling into a pattern and putting things on pause with Jake, although he seems a little childish getting Zane kicked off the book and now trying to take the book away from Kelsey. It was also nice to see Zane speak the truth about Kelsey doing all the work, even though he’s been disgruntled with Kelsey and everything that has happened with Jake.

Now what’s next? With Pauline popping back into the picture, her sequel could prove difficulties for them, especially if she tries to include a Liza-like character in the book. Next week’s trailer sees Michael Urie’s Redmond return with him spotting Liza and Charles at dinner, while it seems Kelsey may find out about Liza and Charles. Meanwhile, Lauren appears to recognise Enzo and may confront Diana with hopefully not any heartbreaking truth… Until next week!
