Younger Recap: 5.05 ‘Big Little Liza’

Previously we saw grumpy Charles, and now we have no Charles with the new episode bringing Josh back into the picture.

In last week’s episode, Liza met a Vanity Fair writer named Don and the pair hit it off, which led to them spending time together a few times. It also led to Kelsey and Liza bringing him in to pitch a potential book, but grumpy and upset Charles wouldn’t even let him speak. Meanwhile, Diana goes out on a date with Enzo, the plumber she previously had a fling with, while Maggie, Lauren, and Josh hang out. Surprisingly, Charles somewhat apologises to Liza, but becomes even more angry with Liza.

A Face Full of Bread

Liza and Maggie are watching a video Liza was sent of her daughter ‘breadfacing’, which involves smashing and rolling your face into some form of bread, and Liza is incredibly confused and concerned by it. Later on, Liza grabs a bite to eat with Don and he talks about his son before she slips over on some ice right on to her back. The contents of her bag spills out, including both of her licences. Naturally she has to then explain the truth to Don, and he seems to understand as their conversation is sealed with a kiss.

Liza then tries both texting and calling Caitlin, but she can’t figure out what to say and finally opts for texting her instead to meet for dinner.

The Same Mistakes

At Empirical, Jake is having a meeting with Kelsey, Zane, and Diana about his memoir and it seems he hasn’t turned in any chapters yet. Jake promises there will be no more excuses and he’ll start right after he attends an Arianna Huffington event. Kelsey is interested in the event, and Jake winds up asking her to join him. (Side note: Both Diana and Kelsey’s foundation stands out immensely in this scene… Could be lighting, make-up, or even both, but it was most definitely distracting).

Jake and Kelsey are at the event and while people are interested in Kelsey, Jake whisks her outside as he doesn’t want to share her. He then asks to kiss her, which takes Kelsey by surprise, but after a few giggles, they kiss. The next day, Zane asks Kelsey how the event was before saying they look cosy in a photo, but he knows she would never do anything to jeopardise the book…

A Decision Looms

At Josh’s apartment, Lauren has overtaken the living room and kitchen as she’s planning for an event and both Kelsey and Josh are a little overwhelmed by it all. Josh heads to his shop where a man says that Josh is dodging all his calls and that he needs an answer…

At Lauren’s event for make-up that you can eat, both Maggie and Liza are confused by Lauren’s intern who is gender-queer, and Lauren explains along with informing them of the various sexualities within the community. Liza speaks with Kelsey, and she gives her opinion on Jake with a few words and a look.

Liza receives a call from Josh asking if she wants to come say goodbye to Inkburg, so she heads over. He informs Liza that his landlord wants him to sign a ten-year lease or vacate, and Josh thinks he’s going to vacate and go elsewhere. He thinks he can’t go making any commitments before Liza gives him a speech that he has all of them. He sadly replies back with that he doesn’t have Liza before he walks off.

The Wrath of Liza

Liza receives a call from Vanity Fair as they are checking some details about a story on Liza… That she’s a co-founder of Millennial Print and she’s 41. Turns out Don has written an article on her. Kelsey and Liza have to rush off to a meeting at Hello Sunshine, and Kelsey says she should have made something up with Don. Kelsey receives a call as well from Vanity Fair, but they ignore it. When they arrive at Hello Sunshine, Kiara also received a call from a fact-checker and so she asks Liza point-blank. How does Liza choose to reply? She’s age-queer. Liza and Kelsey spin a whole tale about trying to stop everything being based on age and Kiara seems to somewhat understand.

Liza is pissed with Don, so with a ‘woman-on-a-mission’ backing track, Liza finds him at a Broadway Cares Equity Fights Aids event where he’s pocketing food again. She approaches him and she’s upset about his story, but the story isn’t going ahead as social media has blown up with a little something called age-queer.

Liza asks Caitlin about the bread video, which was for extra money apparently. Caitlin doesn’t think it’s that big of a deal so Liza grabs the bread on the restaurant table and proceeds to smash her face into the bread while also making noises.

Liza returns to Josh’s shop and she’s upset to see people taking the Inkburg sign down. She gives a compelling speech and tells him to take the lease as she will always be in his life. It turns out, he’s just getting a bigger sign and the pair embrace while Josh says “he’s not ready to give up yet.”

Overall Thoughts?

This episode was definitely a bit of a downer after the show being off last week due to July 4th. While sadly the episodes are only 20-25 minutes long, it’s so hard missing out on scenes with certain characters and between, such as not seeing Charles this episode. One thing that stood out to me, other than everyone’s foundation standing out, was the LGBT+ scene at Lauren’s event where even I felt the dialogue missed the mark. While Younger was definitely trying to be humorous, especially with the dialogue coming from Lauren, it did come across as rather mocking, which is unfortunate as Younger has a rather broad range of characters. I also find it hilarious that with each episode, it seems as though characters have some serious mood changes, such as Josh in this episode. He’s back on the Liza track, when will this boy learn… Lastly, big props to Miriam Shor, who plays Diana, for directing this episode!
