Younger Recap: 5.07 ‘A Christmas Miracle’

Younger A Christmas Miracle

Younger A Christmas Miracle

This week’s episode is literally a miracle. After five seasons of waiting, Younger fans have been treated to an exciting build-up to the big final scene at the end of the episode.

During last week’s episode, Maggie finds herself selected for a special art show which leads to a married couple interested in her artwork and she also finally meets Diana; Liza winds up helping Charles obtain a manuscript and the pair end up drinking and almost finally talking at the author’s house; and Lauren tells Kelsey she can have both Jake and Zane.

Trouble In Paradise

Kelsey and Jake are in bed together when Kelsey receives a text from Zane wanting to meet up, which she sneakily replies to. However, she cancels her plans with Zane after a tempting shower offer from Jake. It also seems New York Magazine wants to include an excerpt from Jake’s new book.

Charles is thanking everyone for their hardwork at Empirical and Kelsey informs them Marriage Vacation has been successful, along with the news of Jake’s excerpt. New York Magazine has invited them all to a party that night, and it seems Kelsey isn’t managing with Zane very well. Liza says she’ll be unable to attend, much to the disappoint of Kelsey who was hoping Liza would run interference and tells Liza she’s seeing both of them.

At the event, Charles congratulates Kelsey and Jake, however, Kelsey feels awkward about Jake trying to hold her hand and opts to get some champagne when she runs into Zane. He’s quite thrilled with how well they’re doing and goes in for a kiss—which Jake of course sees from a distance and results in Jake speaking with Charles

Kelsey and Zane meet with Charles as Jake asked to work with Kelsey for the rest of the book and Zane is not happy. Zane guesses that something is going on between Kelsey and Jake, and now they are both upset.

Christmas Festivities

Caitlin has requested one night together as a family, which means David will be joining them at a Christmas party.

Liza, Caitlin, and David are at their Christmas function when Christmas family traditions are brought up and it seems their family has a hilarious tradition. Liza tries to shut down the idea of their tradition being on show, especially since David didn’t bring an instrument, but it seems David had it all planned. Cue the Sound of Music rendition of ‘The Lonely Goatherd’. And who happens to walk in? Charles. Rose’s parents inform Charles that Liza is the woman they have been wanting to set him up with, as they aren’t aware the pair already know one another.

At Diana’s apartment, Enzo has brought a real Christmas tree to spread the festive cheer, but Diana is more worried about the pine needles spreading all over her carpet. While Diana is getting ready, Enzo sets up the tree and once he flicks on the lights, Diana seems to be quite happy with it.

Maggie Puts Her Foot Down

Maggie says farewell to all of her art pieces that have been purchased by the interested couple from the previous episode, along with being gifted with some incredible gold cuffs.

Maggie is trying out a Karl Lagerfeld-esque outfit for the party she has been invited to, while Liza tells Maggie about Charles and yodelling. Caitlin appears with a hangover when Josh drops off some presents for Maggie and Liza, so Liza gives him a handmade beanie. Caitlin is both surprised and excited exclaiming Josh still loves Liza. Later on, Caitlin runs into Josh and she says that she hopes Liza and Josh work it out because he’s the best thing that has happened to Liza.

Maggie rocks her killer outfit at the party when the buyer’s introduce her to another artist before being invited to an artist retreat in St. Barts. The artist informs her that they also bought all of her artwork, which is in storage, as they are an “investment” and nothing is really a choice. She’s also sporting the “golden handcuffs”, so Maggie puts an end to it by handing her cuffs back.

The Wait Is Over

Charles approaches Liza and he says last night was charming and they share stories about their children before Liza explains that Caitlin is why she did what she did. Diana then gives a very large necklace to Liza, while Liza gifts her with a red handmade scarf which Diana gets a little teary over. Liza also receives a Christmas bonus from Charles, which is more than what Diana approved, but she believes Liza earned it.

While Charles is stuck in traffic, an advert for Sound of Music plays in the car and Charles requests the driver to turn around… Liza arrives home to find Charles standing at her front door and he tells her that he doesn’t care anymore before going in for an incredible kiss.

Overall Thoughts?

Oh. My. Charles. It was great to see Charles soften and almost talk to last week, and this week’s episode utterly decimated any anger or apprehension he had towards Liza, as we could clearly see when he turned up at her doorstop. The moments shared between Liza and Charles at the Christmas party and later at Empirical did well to show his transition to “accepting and understanding Charles”. Now that there’s no other men, women, or secrets between them, Liza and Charles are free to roam and romp around (in secret) to see if they are truly compatible, or if this has just been one big build-up of tension. However, the preview sees Pauline wanting to speak with Charles… and also Josh has been pushed in the direction of going for Liza once again thanks to Caitlin, so there’s definitely a couple of hurdles in sight for the pair of them.
