Recently, with the heat going on this summer, what else is there to do? Possibly just relax and have fun, or maybe by watching a movie about summer! This season, a movie called Summer Night was released and it stars Victoria Justice, Hayden Szeto, Justin Chatwin, Elena Kampouris, Bill Millner, Lana Condor, and many more!
This movie was a theatrical release, but to be completely honest, this should have been one of those indie low budget films put onto Netflix. While this was fairly decent summer movie, this was not worth spending money on a ticket to watch in theaters.
The trailer gave the audience zero idea what this movie is about and even after watching through the entire movie, it would leave the audience clueless as there was a non-existent plot.
The whole concept of multiple storylines between different characters that possibly might interconnect eventually in the movie needs to stop. It clearly hasn’t worked out so well for a while from a general point of view. It’s confusing, boring, and unoriginal. Movies like Valentine’s Day, Prom, Something Borrowed, What To Expect When You’re Expecting, etc. are examples of movies that fall into that category. Of course, movies like Love Actually, Rent, or even maybe Pulp Fiction turned out perfectly fine, but this all depends on the directing, script, and the editing process.
In addition, this movie resembled the recent movie Netflix released called The Last Summer starring KJ Apa, Maia Mitchell, Tyler Posey, Halston Sage, and more, which all about being spontaneous during the summer break with relationships involved.
Although this set of actors are great actors as proven in their previous work, it seems like they’re terrible and awkward actors in this, which could be due to the weak script. The script felt so bland and unrealistic. Based on assumptions, these young or new adults shouldn’t be talking like that and the dialogue felt inconsistent. Maybe it just depends on the characters. While these actors are considerably likeable in real life, the characters aren’t. The characters are all flat. With little to no personality. They are all unlikable and you can’t connect with any of them. They’re don’t seem relatable at all. You can’t even have an actual opinion about these characters since they don’t do much but just try to make the most out of their summer time.
You’ll be trying to continuously seek out anything interesting or outstanding that would happen in Summer Night, but you can’t. You keep seeking and seeking, but then the movie is finally over. Like hooray! They all are happy and seem to solve their problems with their relationships or what to do in the summer.
Overall, nothing stood out in an excellent way. It wasn’t even a fun watch. You should never judge a movie by its trailer but Summer Night could’ve had the potential. It had the potential to be fresh with the different types of setting locations on what to expect during the summer time for young/new adult. This would be the type of movie you would watch when you have nothing else to do and at the bottom of your “to watch” list. This movie would of been perfectly fine if it just went to a streaming service like Netflix and not released in theaters first. So just wait until you could watch this movie somewhere else less expensive. Maybe in the summer of course, you would watch it since it is about summer!
