Last week we saw the big confrontation between Liza and Charles, and he’s definitely still angry in ‘The Talented Mr. Ridley’.
In last week’s episode, Kelsey and Zane faced off in order to get Jake Devereux, a former White House speechwriter for Obama, to write a memoir. After a little romp around, the pair then found out the next morning that Jake wants to work with them both. As for Liza, her and Diana are trying to help Pauline get through her interviews when they keep asking her personal questions about Charles. However, Pauline comes out with the truth, and Charles assumes lying was Liza’s idea and he confronts Liza when she chases after him.
A Game of Lies
The Empirical crew are playing Mafia at Diana’s apartment for some reason and Liza seems to have her eye on one of the guests named Don, who is a writer for Vanity Fair and GQ. The game begins with Liza as the murderer, and Kelsey believes Liza is the murderer. Naturally playing the game, Liza denies this, but Charles “can tell” Liza is lying and he continues on, which just seems like he is way too into the game.
Don then asks Liza on a date, but Liza says she’s not dating at the moment. He keeps trying by offering her a plus one to a People Magazine party before Diana steals her away and into the bathroom where the toilet is overflowing. After the party, the plumber arrives and he just so happens to be the plumber who worked on the pipes in the apartment opposite to Diana—as well as Diana’s. The pair make some awkward small talk before Enzo says he got the hint and he was going to ask her out, but she wasn’t answering. Diana explains she was seeing someone, and now the pair will be having dinner!
Drunk Kelsey receives a glass of water instead of wine from Zane, along with an offer to crash at his. However, she thinks “crash” and “smash” are synonymous, but she still takes him up on the offer. Later on, Kelsey and Zane are still at the office and Kelsey notices he’s changed his shirt as it seems he is off to a date or “drinks”, and she seems a bit miffed.
An Invitation and One Disgruntled Man
At Empirical, Liza receives an invitation to the People Magazine party and Diana scoffs about Liza scoring a date. Charles then joins the conversation so naturally he serves some serious looks about Diana still thinking Liza is in her twenties. He also makes a snarky comment about Don stealing food from Diana’s party.
Liza accepts the invitation and she looks stunning and she gets to know Don a little better. It seems Don has a little book idea about the Manhattan elite, so Liza asks him to pitch it to Empirical the next day.
Kelsey and Liza seem to be really enjoying Don’s stories until Charles walks in. Don tries pitching his book, but Charles keeps interrupting him with questions that throws him off each time he tries to begin talking. Charles leaves, and it seems quite dismissive much to Don, Kelsey and Liza’s dismay. Liza then tells Kelsey that Charles knows, and she can’t believe that Charles is going to tank every potential lead.
Liza goes to see Charles and she offers her resignation as the way he is treating her will affect both Millennial and Kelsey’s career. He retorts back with that it’s her lies affecting the company, but Liza says he can be mad at her, not everything or anyone else. His continued remarks end with a slammed door from Liza.
Dates All Around
Liza and Diana are waiting for Enzo, who rocks up in his van—his business is named ‘Son of A Plumb’, I love it. Enzo whisks Diana away in his van, which leaves Liza confronted by Charles yet again. He asks if anyone else knows, and he’s frustrated that Kelsey has also been lying. Thankfully, he somewhat apologises for his actions and realises that Millennial needs Liza to survive. She asks if she can explain everything, along with an apology, but Charles won’t have it.
Enzo takes Diana to an Italian restaurant on Staten Island and he’s trying to impress her with a $500 bottle of wine, and it seems as though it’s working.
Don and Liza are having drinks when Don’s card is declined and he reveals that he’s mostly out of a job and writing puff pieces for online websites. He’s living off free food, alcohol, and gift bags from all the parties he is invited to. The pair leave and surprisingly Liza joins him to go to the next party he’s heading to.
Stray and Straying
Maggie and Josh are out for dinner and drinks, and he’s vowing to go no sex and no alcohol for 90 days. A passerby leaves his dog near the pair, but he never comes back for him. Maggie reminds Josh the last time he picked up a stray, he married her, which Josh scoffs at. Lauren and Josh then team up to put up posters of the dog when a lady turns up claiming the dog is hers and it was her ex that left him there. As soon as the woman says “you love the hot stranger, don’t you”, it’s a sudden change in expression for Josh and they head back to his apartment—without Lauren. After an afternoon delight, Josh heads to Maggie’s and she laughs because he broke his fast.
Overall Thoughts?
Charles, Charles, Charles—you really know how to make a girl feel sad. You can hear the venom in his voice and those piercing looks, well, I wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of either of those… Poor Liza. One thing that was incredibly enjoyable about this week’s episode was seeing Diana reunited with Enzo, especially after the horrendous Richard. While Diana’s character is very much the typical ‘woman-in-charge with a hard exterior’, the show has done well to show the softer side of her and one hopes she finds the happiness she deserves after working so hard to do well in her career.
The episode was also broken up with some scenes between Maggie and Josh and then Lauren and Josh, and it’s great to see Josh trying to focus on something else for a change—even though it didn’t last long. However, I am disappointed we are seeing less of Liza and Maggie together, even if it’s just for the morning wake-up or getting home from work as I would love to know her reaction to the Charles confrontation, as well as her thoughts on the way Charles is acting. It’s one of my very few frustrations with Younger, we just need more time for each episode!
And don’t forget! If you’re interested in actually reading Marriage Vacation, you can find it on Amazon, Book Depository, and other good book retailers!
Unfortunately Younger won’t be on next week due to July 4th, but it will be back the following week thankfully!
