Riverdale Recap: 3.02 ‘Fortune and Men’s Eyes’

Riverdale 3.02 'Fortune and Men's Eyes'

On the last episode of Riverdale, we were introduced to a brand new mystery, saw Archie get sent to jail, and learned what all the kids of Riverdale were up to over the summer.

Archie In Juvie

This week’s Riverdale episode starts with Archie and his time in juvie. The warden pulls Archie aside shortly after he arrives, and tells him that there’s a music room that he should utilise. Then, Archie meets his roommate who is known as Mad Dog. Mad Dog has clearly been in juvie for a while and Archie starts asking him questions, but Mad Dog just warns him about his fancy sneakers. The Serpents in juvie refuse to protect Archie, well Joaquin (who is back and as hot as ever) tells everyone Archie is a fake Serpent, and the Ghoulies ambush Archie and steal his shoes.

When Veronica and Reggie bring Archie a new pair of shoes, Archie gets an idea to play a football game. Honestly, I don’t know how he comes up with these ideas. This pep talk actually works as Mad Dog stands by Archie causing everyone to agree to play.

During this football game, Veronica and some of the Vixens show up to perform “Jailhouse Rock” for them. I have no idea how they can just go and do this, but it’s Riverdale. However, Hiram arrives and lets his daughter know that he is friends with the warden and as of tomorrow, Veronica is banned from visiting Archie. Right after this news is dropped, the warden unleashes the guards on the inmates and they treat the game like a riot so they can beat up the prisoners. Then when Archie returns to his cell, Mad Dog is gone and the guard claims he’s dead. The warden says that Archie has been ‘tapped’ to replace him.

Jughead and Betty Investigate

Jughead updates Betty on the Dilton situation, who is dead and Ben is in a coma. Also, Betty’s seizure was apparently stress-induced and the levitating babies were all a hallucination. At the coroner’s office, Jughead and Betty find out that Ben and Dilton both drank cyanide out of a blueberry drink and that’s all the coroner knows.

After Betty meets Evelyn Evernever, who is Edgar’s daughter, she and Jughead go to visit Ben at the hospital. There they find a talisman on the door and Ben’s mother says a girl with a bow in her hair left it: Ethel. They also find out that another member of Dilton’s troop has gone missing. Ethel tells them that she spent the summer dating Ben and hanging out with him and Dilton in Dilton’s bunker in the woods. She agrees to take them to the bunker that night, but once they’re in the woods, they can’t find her. Instead they find the Gargoyle King who is a tall tree-like creature that’s super scary.

The next day, Betty and Jughead go to find the bunker and they find the missing member of Dilton’s troop. It turns out he was Dilton’s apprentice and he was waiting for his ‘master’ to come home. It was all part of the game including the cyanide. Betty and Jughead take the boy home and start asking Ethel more questions except she tells them that she can’t talk because when Dilton tried, he ended up dead. Just then, Ethel has a seizure while Evelyn watches. So, the Farm and the Gargoyle King probably have a connection. Right?

While that is still just a thought, we do know that there’s a connection between the Gargoyle King and the parents. Hermione calls them all into her office to talk about the pact they made to “never mention that night.” She is very worried that all of this Dilton stuff will lead them back there. She brings up Ben’s blue lips and they all know what she’s talking about, but don’t tell us.

Then, at the end when Betty and Jughead take Ethel to the hospital, they pay Ben a visit. He is sitting in an open window talking all about how he is ready to ‘ascend’ and be with Dilton. He tells them that it is ‘all part of his plan.’ Jughead and Betty plead with him to come down but he throws himself out the window.

Final Thoughts?

This episode was even crazier than the first one if that is at all possible, but I enjoyed it!
