You can definitely tell the fifth season of Younger is drawing to a close because curve ball are being thrown at our characters during this week’s episode! From issues with Liza and Charles, to Liza needing to come clean to Caitlin, and of course, Josh finding out about Charles and expressing his frustrations…
During last week’s episode, Liza and Charles are trying to cover up their relationship, however, Liza has to come clean to Kelsey after Charles overrules Kelsey’s decisions. Lauren manages to get Kelsey recognised for an awards, and after her ordeal with Liza, she gives a heartwarming speech about how Liza has been part of her success also. The girls also score a new title with Quinn Tyler who is a self-made billionaire. At the end of the episode, Charles wants his relationship to stay off anybody’s radar since it’s “not the right time”.
Trout Beats Eel
The episode kicks off with Diana sneaking away in the morning from Enzo’s to avoid additional Uber fees, but she seems more scared of Enzo’s mother. Unfortunately for Diana, she runs into his Ma and she invites Diana to dinner, which Diana will also have to cook for. Diana winds up asking Liza to order some food and then place it in a casserole dish for the dinner, but Liza proposes Maggie makes her lasagna instead.
The following night, Diana arrives with her lasagna before meeting all the family and she winds up helping Ma in the kitchen by giving some eels a good whack before peeling them. Possibly hours later, Diana is still slaving away when they can finally serve up the food. She heads back into the kitchen for the eel dish and she’s reminded to garnish, but she does so with cheese… Ma calls her a dummy and Diana says she’s too old to fight. This causes an argument between Diana and Ma for being old, not Italian, and unable to cook. Diana says Ma is the reason Enzo is still single for scaring women away. As she catches the ferry back, Enzo apologises and he says he’ll move to her world and get an apartment so they can try. Chills I tell you, chills.
The Grand Re-Opening
Liza drops off coffee to Josh’s tattoo parlour, but Lauren and Kelsey deny her entry as she’s not allowed to see the renovations just yet. Kelsey talks him up saying he seems older and more mature after signing the new lease, and it seems that he just wants to impress Liza.
The girls have a meeting with Quinn Tyler (Laura Benanti) about her book, and she seems reluctant about making changes since she’s “used to being the one giving the notes, not getting them”. After Charles drops by, Quinn asks the pair if he is dating anyone, which causes Kelsey and Liza to freak out a little bit. Liza then drops by Charles’ office for an open-door conversation about Quinn’s interest and to make potential weekend plans, but Charles has a conference.
That night, the girls head to Inkburg for the re-opening and it’s an incredible transformation. Liza congratulates Josh and he introduces her to Skye (Sydney Morton) who is also a tattoo artist and specialises in “redesigning regret”. Liza says she doesn’t regret her tattoo, while Josh mentions his dragon tattoo which was meant to be for Liza’s birth year. Lauren and Kelsey then make a lovely little speech congratulating Josh and when it comes to Josh’s speech, he only acknowledges Liza for not giving up on him. Caitlin then turns up much to the surprise of Liza as Caitlin is in town for a wedding that she has been invited to because of her boyfriend….who is much older. Josh and Liza are more than shocked, which results in Caitlin getting mothered by Liza. However, Liza takes a step back and they’ll be having brunch, and Caitlin is also inviting Josh.
Like Mother, Like Daughter
During a very awkward brunch, the interrogation begins. It turns out Greg is an English professor, but Caitlin switched classes so they could pursue a romantic relationship. Liza is downing Bloody Mary’s and pulling faces, and she finds out their relationship is a secret. After the brunch, Josh says Liza should shut their relationship down, but Liza would be a hypocrite and comes clean to Josh about Charles. He’s not happy about it and says it’s not real because they’re sneaking behind everyone’s back.
Liza storms into the apartment to find Maggie and Kelsey there and she tells them about Caitlin and Josh. It seems bad things come in threes as they show Liza an Instagram story from Quinn Tyler’s account and she is with Charles at the conference. Later on, Liza continues scrolling through Instagram and Liza thinks her and Charles are just a fantasy. Caitlin turns up as Greg told her to leave because another faculty member was there. In that moment, Liza decides to come clean about Charles and all of her lies. Much to her surprise, Caitlin takes it well and just laughs about it all. Liza says everything should out in the open, but “we accept the love we think we deserve”.
Liza goes to see Charles and she brings up Quinn. However, it seems she wasn’t flirting with Charles, but rather making an investment with the company. Charles is still trying to keep work and their relationship separate, but Liza says she doesn’t want to be a secret. When Charles says it’s not the right time, she simply replies with “call me when it is” before walking off. Meanwhile, Josh is with Skye and he’s getting his dragon tattoo redone because “he’s done with it”.
Overall Thoughts?
Well, two episodes of somewhat bliss for Liza and Charles and now it’s mostly over. While I love seeing Liza happy, I am more happy that she is freeing herself of the lies she had to create in order to get by. She’s told Kelsey, Charles, Josh, and Caitlin about her true self, and why should she keep hiding things now? Everyone deserves a second chance, and Liza is simply trying to grasp that chance with both hands and hold on to it for as long as she can.
It’s been strange not seeing Josh as much this season, and this episode certainly featured him more. It was funny that it almost seemed like he was giving up on Liza after talking about not giving up. Clearly he’s not consistent and picks and chooses when he’ll work hard to have what he wants? I don’t know with that boy.
As for Diana, I am incredibly happy things are progressing with Enzo and that he is stepping up and moving out to see if they can make things work. Hopefully he’ll be the one for Diana! We need a real Younger wedding!
