The Umbrella Academy Recap: 2.10 ‘The End of Something’

In the previous episode, Ben sacrifices himself to help Vanya, while Harlan kills his father when a gun goes off and he repels the bullet straight back into his father. Luther and Five accidentally destroy Older Five’s briefcase Meanwhile, Herb obtains a file and gives it to Lila, which informs her that Five killed her parents and The Handler then manipulates her into going after the siblings. History then repeats itself with JFK killed, but Reginald wasn’t behind it and as the Majestic 12 lied to him. He then reveals an alien-like head and kills them all.

On The Run

In 2006, younger versions of the siblings exit the mansion to surround the coffin of their fallen brother, Ben, along with Pogo (voiced by Adam Godley), Grace (Jordan Claire Robbins), and Reginald (Colm Feore). In a terribly harsh speech directed towards the children, Reginald blames the death on the siblings. After they all leave, Ben speaks with Klaus about there being a light he can walk towards. However, Klaus says he can go at anytime, so Ben sticks around.

In the present, the siblings are back at Elliott’s and they’re all wanted with their ‘stories’ broadcasted: Vanya (Ellen Page) for killing FBI agents; Diego (David Castañeda) and escaping from the mental institution; Luther (Tom Hopper) with his mafia ties and fighting under the alias ‘King Kong’; Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman) as a “Negro radical responsible for instigating and organising the riots”; Klaus (Robert Sheehan), the cult leader and tax evader; and lastly, a young boy who is likely being held hostage.

Diego tells of being offered a job at the Commission, which Five (Aidan Gallagher) is incredibly shocked by. Vanya tries calling Sissy when she sees visions of Harlan (Justin Paul Kelly) begging for help, alongside recalling what happened when she saved him. She tells them she needs to go help Harlan and about how she brought him back to life, but she also needs their help. However, Diego says they have other priorities and they all agree. As she leaves, Klaus jumps in the car with her and asks about Ben, to which she tells him how Ben was scared to go to the light and Klaus didn’t make him stay. Diego and Allison also hop in the car, followed by Five and Luther in the trunk, which heavily weighs down the car. As they leave, Axel (Kris Holden-Ried) follows.

The Big Battle

Arriving at the farm, it’s covered in snow and Sissy (Marin Ireland) runs out with a gun. Vanya tells her she’s here to help and Vanya steps towards Harlan to talk him down. The Handler (Kate Walsh) and Lila (Ritu Arya) then appear and Five and Diego find out that The Handler is there to assassinate the ‘criminals responsible for killing the Commission’s board members’. Lila begins to bring up her parents, but The Handler interrupts her and then hundreds of the Commission’s agents appear and charge forth.

The siblings are being shot at when Vanya manages to talk Harlan down, but then their powers flare and they are flung backwards. Five is unable to zap them to the house, so Diego uses his powers to slow the bullets and fling them aside, which allows Five to make it there safely.

Vanya exits the barn with her powers and she knocks all of the agents out, except for The Handler and Lila as they are protected by an energy bubble. Lila then rises into the air in the exact same manner as Vanya and sends her own energy wave towards the siblings, knocking them all down. The Handler then sends her to go kill them all.

She bests Luther with his strength and then faces Allison and the two begin fighting. Allison begins to say ‘I heard a rumour’, but Lila finishes it and Allison becomes unable to breathe. Luther encourages Allison to fight it and gives her mouth to mouth, while Five and Lila fight one another. Meanwhile, The Handler finds Sissy and knocks her out so she can be Harlan’s new mother.

Welcome To The Family

Diego calls for help as his leg is stuck under the tractor and they race to help him. They realise that Lila is one of them and likely there’s more of them out there.

Lila plans on making Five suffer and tells him of her parents, but counters by informing her that The Handler faked the kill order and now it seems that The Handler was looking for her since she’s one of them. Diego manages to talk Lila down and makes her see reason, but The Handler then walks in and shoots all of the Hargreeves children. Lila goes to kill her, but she gets shot first. Somehow, Five is still alive and The Handler goes to end him, but Axel arrives and kills her first.

With Axel hovering over him, Five recalls what his father said about going back seconds, so he time jumps. Five then stops The Handler from killing them all, but Axel still kills The Handler. Seeing this, Lila runs for the briefcase and disappears while Axel and Five decide enough is enough and Axel leaves.

Sissy calls for Vanya and she goes to Harlan and takes back what she gave him while her siblings look on proud and impressed.

Umbrella Academy No More

Herb (Ken Hall) and Dot (Patrice Goodman) arrive to find all of the agents dead and The Handler dead for real this time. Herb tells Diego and Five that the Commission will be electing a new board, but for now, he’s running the joint and they have their pick of briefcases.

Back in the house, Sissy sits next to Harlan and tells Vanya they can’t go with them to the future as she knows they’ll never be able to have a normal life with Vanya’s powers before the pair kiss goodbye.

Meanwhile, we see Raymond (Yusuf Gatewood) finding the book he gave Allison with a letter inside saying goodbye to him and how their time in the 1960’s has changed all of them. Dave (Calem MacDonald) is seen leaving for the army, while Axel gets on the Destiny’s Children bus with Keechie (Dov Tiefenbach). Sissy and Harlan are seen leaving Texas, but it seems Harlan still has his abilities.

The siblings gather around the briefcase and travel back to 2019. Arriving back in the mansion on April 2nd 2019, Diego notices a difference…there’s a framed painting of Ben over the mantelpiece instead of Five. A very much alive Reginald knew they would be coming. However, they are not at the Umbrella Academy, but rather the Sparrow Academy and five shadowed members appear on the balcony. Ben then appears with a very emo-esque haircut asking Reginald “who the hell are these assholes?” To which the siblings all collectively reply with “shit”.
