The Umbrella Academy 2.01 Right Back Where We Started

The Hargreeves siblings are back with the second season of Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy! If you don’t remember what happened in the season one finale, then our episode recap will help you or perhaps if you don’t remember what happened in the entire season, then our season recap will get you all caught up!

Welcome To The 60’s

Season 2 opens with us learning that on April 1st 2019, the Earth was destroyed by asteroids since Vanya blew up the moon, but the siblings escape the apocalypse thanks to Number Five.

In a flash of light, Ben (Justin H. Min) and Klaus (Robert Sheehan) land together, but none of the other siblings follow. While Bobby Darin’s ‘Beyond The Sea’ is playing, the pair realise they are in Dallas, Texas in February 1960. Meanwhile, Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman) lands in 1961 and races into a restaurant that is for ‘Whites Only’. As for the rest, Luther (Tom Hopper) lands in 1962; Diego (David Castañeda) lands in September 1st, 1963 and races to help a woman getting mugged and then sees JFK on the television; and Vanya (Ellen Page) lands in October 12th 1963 and she’s promptly hit by a car. When each of them lands, a man snaps a picture.

Last but not least, Five (Aidan Gallagher) lands in November 25th, 1963 and immediately comes across the Soviets attacking the US. To the sound of Frank Sinatra’s ‘My Way’, the Hargreeves siblings take on the soldiers with each of them using their abilities, including Vanya! Upon seeing Five, Diego yells out to him, but he’s stopped by a white-haired Hazel (Cameron Britton) who points out the nuclear missiles and they escape. Meanwhile, the siblings look on as the nukes land and destroy the town, as well as themselves.

Hazel informs Five that they were witnessing the end of the world and they’ve jumped to 10 days earlier to restore the timeline, as he’s keeping a promise to Agnes, whom has now passed from cancer after spending 20 years together. Five asks about the Commission when they’re approached by three men with guns (Kris Holden-Ried as Axel, Jason Bryden as Otto, and Tom Sinclair as Oscar). Hazel promptly gives the briefcase to Five, who makes a jump before Hazel is riddled with bullet holes.

Five notices that someone was watching him and he goes to investigate. Within the man’s apartment, Five finds newspaper clippings about aliens and it’s clear the man, whom is named Elliot (Kevin Rankin), has an obsession. He says he’s been waiting for all of them ever since 1960 when he saw the bright lights and discovered Klaus. Elliot has a clipping of Diego, which Five takes with him.

Keeping Up With The Hargreeves

Diego is in a group therapy session at a hospital and later speaks with Dr. Moncton (Matthew Edison) to see when he might be getting out. However, it seems Diego is still playing into a hero complex as he warns again of JFK being killed. Five visits Diego, who has been there for 75 days, and was arrested after trying to stop Lee Harvey Oswald. When told of the new apocalypse, Diego will only help if he can save JFK, so Five leaves.

Vanya is sitting with a young boy named Harlan (Justin Paul Kelly), when his mother, Sissy (Marin Ireland), returns. It seems Vanya has been suffering from headaches and has also lost her memories. The three eat dinner with Carl (Stephen Bogaert), the man of the house, who has placed another missing persons ad in the newspaper for Vanya. That night, Vanya catches Sissy having a smoke and she tells Vanya about her stash of money so she can look out for herself. It’s clear as the pair talk that there’s something there.

Ben and a now bearded Klaus are driving back to Dallas from San Francisco when their car overheats and the pair begin fighting. Walking along the road, Klaus stops at a bar (since Ben is still a ghost) and ‘pretty boy’ is asked to play a round of poker before he nabs a pair of car keys and steals a car. Once they arrive in Dallas, Klaus is arrested for theft.

Reading from the paper, Raymond Chestnut (Yusuf Gatewood) returns home to his wife…Allison! He gives her an early anniversary gift of Jules Verne’s From Earth To Moon, since she stares at the moon every night. Later on, Allison and Raymond meet with an all-Black group about holding a sit-in before JFK’s visit. However, they receive a knock on the door from Mr. Mason (Richard Waugh) enquiring about why there’s a meeting. Mason then tries to claim assault and goes to punch Raymond, but Allison steps in, twists his arm, and kicks him out.

To the soundtrack of ‘Rocket Fuel’ by DJ Shadow, Luther is getting the blood knocked out of him in a ring fight until he gets the nod from a man to take his opponent down.

Time To Escape

To the sound of Daniela Andrade’s ‘Crazy’, Diego wakes to find himself in a drugged stupor, wearing a straitjacket, and in a padded room, but he promptly dislocates his shoulder and uses a pen to unlock the door. Meanwhile, a milkman enters the facility, but it’s Oscar (Tom Sinclair), one of the three men from earlier, and they are here for Diego. An orderly happens upon Diego first, but Lila (Ritu Arya) intervenes and knocks the man out. The pair seem as though they’re about to kiss until Lila jams Diego’s shoulder back into its socket. The trio begin firing at them, so Diego creates a distraction by releasing everyone from their cells. They escape to the basement and run into a pair of officers, but Lila takes one down as she learned to fight from her mother.  The three gunmen exit the building only to find all the patients running around and Diego and Lila not in sight.

At a club, Luther is approached by Autumn (Bo Martynowska), a waitress, when asks about who’s bothering Mr. Jack Ruby (John Kapelos), which turns out to be Carl, Sissy’s husband. Luther then learns that Five is there and he ‘doesn’t give a shit’ about the new apocalypse.
