The Umbrella Academy Recap: 2.08 ‘The Seven Stages’

In the previous episode, Five travels to 1982 Wisconsin to kill the Commission’s board members and The Handler repays him by giving him a briefcase to travel back to 2019…but he only has 90 minutes to find his siblings. As for our other characters, Axel and Otto attack Allison, but she uses her powers to make Axel kill his brother, while Klaus allows Ben to take over his body and he spends time with Jill. Meanwhile, Carl confronts Vanya and tells her she has to leave. She plans to leave with Sissy and Harlan, but they’re stopped by the police and Vanya is knocked out. Only Klaus, Luther, and Five make it to the alleyway, so they miss their opportunity to return to 2019.

A Visit To The FBI

Vanya (Ellen Page) is being interviewed by Special Agent Willy Gibbs (Morgan Kelly) of the FBI and he informs her that Sissy and Harlan have been released back into Carl’s care. With no identification and amnesia, the FBI believes she could be a KGB agent and when he speaks to her in Russian, she replies back. Vanya becomes agitated and her powers flare, but a nurse chloroforms her. Vanya then wakes to find herself strapped to an electric chair and they dose her with LSD. She begins hallucinating and sees herself and her siblings in their uniforms at the mansion for dinner with their father.

At the farm, Carl (Stephen Bogaert) gets off the phone to his brother and tells Sissy (Marin Ireland) that Vanya may be an agent. She seems unsure of what to believe and he suggests she talks to the Reverend and then they’ll take a trip away.

Still in the alleyway, Luther (Tom Hopper) asks Klaus (Robert Sheehan) to check on Allison, while he deals with Five. At Allison’s, Raymond (Yusuf Gatewood) is freaking out because they have a dead white man on their couch when Klaus turns up and finds a very dead Otto on the couch. As for Axel (Kris Holden-Ried), he looks at a photo of his brothers and recalls killing Otto, so he goes to chop his hand off when he sees that the Diego mission canister is a fake and that The Handler is behind it.

Two Fives

Grace (Jordan Claire Robbins) visits Reginald’s office and discovers a hidden door, which contains many files and plans including JFK’s visit. Reginald (Colm Feore) catches her and he asks her why, so she mentions that Diego spoke with her. He tells her that there’s many things he can’t share with her yet and hopes she can trust him for now, but she can’t wait for that.

Five (Aidan Gallagher) is guzzling liquids and dousing himself with baby powder when Luther realises that Five has some kind of plan, which is to find himself. In 1963, he was sent on a mission by the Commission to ensure JFK was assassinated, so he’s going to intercept an older version of himself who has a briefcase. However, being in close proximity to one’s self can have some issues: denial, itching, extreme thirst and urination, excessive gas, acute paranoia, uncontrolled perspiration, and homicidal rage. Five is taking Luther with him so he can help Five stay on track.

Luther and Five find Older Five (Sean Sullivan) at a pub and Five is already exhibiting symptoms, so instead, Luther decides to approach Older Five  first and introduces him to his younger self. Over pints of Guinness, they want Older Five to jump to 2019 and they’ll give him the right math so he can remain the age he is, and then they’ll take the briefcase. However, Older Five tries to convince Luther to travel 2019 with him and also to kill Five.

The Infinite Switchboard

Lila (Ritu Arya) wants to hire Diego (David Castañeda) and pleads her case by saying they need fresh blood that is loyal to them. The Handler (Kate Walsh) agrees, but if he steps out of line, Lila must kill him.

Lila takes Diego to his orientation and he learns about what the Commission does, including keeping the correct timeline, and he sneaks out. Diego finds the Infinite Switchboard and begins plugging things when Herb (Ken Hall) catches him. Diego gets Herb to look up the day JFK was assassinated, but it sounds like Herb doesn’t know about that. When they watch the footage, they instead see the FBI building blow up in the background, so the Frankel footage they saw was an actually an explosion and JFK lives. This then leads to JFK accusing the Soviets and a war ensues. In another clip, they see Vanya emerge from the building as she caused the explosion. Needing help, Herb takes him to a group of Commission workers and they have a briefcase. Later on, Lila returns to the classroom to find Diego isn’t there.

Allison and Reginald wrap up and begin moving Otto’s body when Herb and Diego zap into the house. Diego informs them that it’s Vanya that starts it all and they must stop her. Allison says her goodbyes to Raymond and the siblings leave in search of Vanya.

A Twist!

Returning to Vanya, Reginald says she’s chooses not to remember and they family are served brains for dinner, all the while Agent Gibbs keeps asking her questions. She sees flashes of memories, so Gibbs ups the voltage and we see Harlan (Justin Paul Kelly) also reacting as if he’s been electrocuted too.

All of Vanya’s memories return, but she continues to shake from the electricity even after they’ve turned it off. Her powers flare and energy begins pulsing from her just as Klaus, Diego, and Allison exit the lift. It seems she’s unable to stop and her eyes flare open with her pupils white…and the same happens to Harlan.
