The Riverdale cast attended San Diego Comic-Con 2018 and revealed some information about Season 3 during various panels and interviews, along with a snippet of footage from the new season.
At SDCC this weekend, the cast of Riverdale revealed much about the upcoming season during their panel and interviews. For those of you who do not know, Riverdale is a teen-centered drama show on The CW based on the characters from the Archie comics. The series follows Archie Andrews and his friends’ lives in the small town of Riverdale and it explores the darkness that is hidden behind the perfect facade.
Some exciting pieces of information were released including that the writers and producers plan to have a flashback episode where the current cast will play the roles of their high-school age parents as teased by executive producer Sarah Schechter. This should be super interesting as there are many questions surrounding the characters’ parents that are just begging to be answered.
Also during the panel, the cast confirmed that Gladys and Jellybean Jones (the mother and sister of Jughead) will be appearing in season 3. According to some reports, they are expected to debut in either episode eight or nine, but nothing has been confirmed. I think it’s safe to say that their appearance will cause some drama in the town.
Bughead fans should rejoice at all the news coming from SDCC as Cole Sprouse said that “it’s looking like it’s going to pretty good for Bughead this season,” and said that he wants them to find consistency and happiness. Lili Reinhart dialled it down and said that it does look pretty good but “we don’t know how things are going to pan out.” She also revealed that the pair will return to being investigative sleuths, which will be fun to see.
On a bit of a darker note, we are finally going to learn more about the farm that Polly currently lives on. Lili Reinhart revealed that it is a cult called The Farm, which her mother and sister are both involved with. Lili said that “Betty wants to stay far, far away from them.”
The writers have revealed that season 3 will be a different genre. It will stray away from the murder mystery and serial killer elements, but will still draw on the tradition of pulp and noir as mentioned by Robert Aguirre-Sacasa. It will also feature more of the supporting characters such as Josie and Kevin who have been pushed to the background in previous seasons. Getting to see these characters more will change the show significantly.
In casting news, it was revealed that Penelope Ann Miller has joined the cast as Archie’s lawyer, District Attorney, Ms. Wright.
SDCC also released the first season 3 trailer for Riverdale, which mostly consisted of a recap of the previous two seasons. However, we did see a few new scenes which promised that although the serial killer storyline is over, the show will keep its dark atmosphere. In the trailer we saw clips of the core four going on a Labor Day vacation and Archie was seemingly not in prison. Also, we saw Betty go to her backyard where her sister and mother seemed to be participating in some kind of cultish activity involving the babies. Even with what little information we got, the new season still promises to be full of action, and suspense.
Riverdale returns on October 9, 2018 at 8/7c on the CW
