Perfect Match Zoe May Review
Written by Noha Hashem

This debut novel by Zoe May follows Sophia Jones who in her quest to find love. She has tried almost every dating site out there, all of which have resulted in her ending up with 70 disastrous dates (not that she’s counting), and after having yet another unsuccessful one, she decides that she is done with online dating. However, her roommate and best friend Kate convinces her to give it one more shot on a new dating site. Sophia, who might’ve been slightly drunk at the time, goes crazy with her profile and describes the “Perfect Man”. For example, he must 1) Be a multi-millionaire, 2) Have a rescue cat, and 3) Look like Robert Pattinson.

Sophia doesn’t expect anything to come from this dating site and definitely not with a profile like that. The only reason she did it was so Kate would leave her alone.

Except one day a guy who fits almost every category on her profile contacts her, and Sophia is certain it’s a prank. So she decides to meet him to be sure and yep, he is a walking, talking version of her dating profile. She cannot believe it.

Could it really be this easy? Has she just found the Perfect Man? Or will it end up being another disastrous date to add to the list?

One word to describe this book would be cute. It was definitely a fun read that brought a smile to my face on many occasions. Sophia is funny, quirky, and adorable. It was also admirable that her character was an aspiring author and it would have been fun to know what her book was about! Her group of friends were the highlight of the book for me, as they were very entertaining and each had their own unique character with favourites definitely being Kate and Sandra.

The book was a bit slow at first, but then things started getting interesting when she met Daniel. His character was quite enjoyable, and the same could be said about their relationship at first, but I can’t say I was thrilled by what happened later.

Unfortunately, there were a few issues with the book that prevented me from giving it a higher rating. The book had a lot of ups and downs for me; one second I’d be thinking ‘I’m loving this book!’ and the next chapter I wouldn’t be so sure making it hard to figure out how one felt about the book at the end. Moreover, while Sophia was a good character in theory, I personally couldn’t truly connect with her as much as I would’ve liked. Maybe it had something to do with how I sometimes felt like she was a bit shallow and judgemental.

The biggest issue I had however was how things concluded relationship-wise. It seemed a bit unrealistic and didn’t really make sense to me, and the last couple of chapters felt a little rushed and somewhat all over the place. It felt as if I was being told instead of shown what was happening, which resulted in a sense of disconnection to the story.

On the other hand, I did like how the story concluded for Sophia and the revelations she had at the end of the book about herself. And even though it could’ve been executed better, I did appreciate the message behind the story.

So, overall it was an enjoyable read with an original idea, but with a few hitches. Even so, it was still pretty good for a debut novel! It would definitely be of interest to rom-com lovers and anyone who’s looking for a fun, quick read.
