New To TV: Camping

Camping HBO TV Series 2018

HBO’s new comedy Camping sees Jennifer Garner and David Tennant headline the new series brought to us by the team that created Girls.

From executive producers Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner of Girls, Camping is a new comedy series and an adaptation of the British series. The new series follows Kathryn and Walt, a not-so-happily married couple. A meticulously planned outdoor trip to celebrate Walt’s 45th birthday is derailed by uninvited guests and forces of nature, turning the weekend into a test of marriage and friendships.

The series is set as a limited series, but when asked at the Television Critics Association if it might get another season like Big Little Lies, it wasn’t ruled out by Konner.

“I don’t know. You have to ask HBO that question, because we really sold it as this limited series, so I don’t know,” Konner said. “But I would die to come back to these people.”

Camping marks Garner’s first TV role since Alias, and she spoke about how a shorter series appealed to her as she doesn’t “know how moms do that.” She also discussed what drew her to the role.

“I was drawn to the writing, just flat out the writing was so much fun to say and David can tell you that I had a really hard time saying it,” she said. “I mean, being in a scene with David and saying, ‘Do you want me to have a dysfunctional pelvic floor for the whole of your birthday weekend?’ Like, who gets to say that every single day at work? There were things that I got to say that I felt like no one else gets to say these lines.”

Starring Jennifer Garner (Alias), David Tennant (Doctor Who), Juliette Lewis (August: Osage County), Janicza Bravo (Love), Arturo del Puerto (CHIPS), Brett Gelman (Stranger Things), Cheyenne Haynes (Good Girls Revolt), and Ione Skye.

The eight-episode limited series premieres October 14th on HBO.
