Review: Star Wars The Last Jedi

Star Wars The Last Jedi

It’s the last month of 2017 and finally, the highly anticipated Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theatres. In this latest instalment of the Star Wars franchise, we will see what happen after the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The story has three subplots: the Resistance with Poe and Leia at its centre, the First Order with Kylo, and Ahch-To with Luke and Rey. Halfway through the movie, it diverges into a fourth subplot with Finn and newcomer Rose going on their own journey. The first three plot are interconnected and add weight to the story, so I didn’t mind them or found them confusing like some.

However, that being said, I did feel as though Finn and Rose’s plot was the weakest and the most unnecessary. It’s not connected to the other three so it really didn’t add much to the story, but overall, I really enjoyed the movie and for an almost 3 hours movie, it flew quickly.

The weak subplot of Finn and Rose extends to their character’s arc also. With Luke and Rey stuck on an island, Kylo being Kylo, and Poe and Leia holding the fort for the resistance, they all grow as a character. But Finn and Rose… they don’t feel like they are growing. Other characters experienced twist and turns, but Finn and Rose, especially Finn, ended up in the same place as they were at the beginning of the movie.

If there’s one thing we all can agree on this movie, it’s definitely how visually stunning it is. The cinematography, the colours, and the symbolism of light and dark in this movie blend really well and create an amazing cinematic experience. The fight scenes are choreographed better than The Force Awakens, and they were a delight to watch.

A lot of people complained that The Force Awakens was too similar with A New Hope… well, The Last Jedi isn’t similar with any kind of Star Wars movie so far.

It might not be for everyone, critics seems to love it while audience are having polarised opinions. For me, I enjoyed watching it and I will be watching it more than once!
