‘The Hate U Give’ Official Trailer Is Here!

The Hate U Give Movie

The official trailer for the adaptation of Angie Thomas’ best-selling novel, The Hate U Give, has dropped during the BET Awards, although it technically premiered earlier this month at New York’s BookCon, but nevertheless, fans are excited.

The upcoming film is based on the 2017 YA novel of the same name by debut author Angie Thomas, and it quickly became a bestseller and the winner of multiple awards with its powerful and timely story.

The film and novel follow Starr Carter, who is constantly switching between two worlds: the poor, mostly black, neighborhood where she lives and the rich, mostly white, prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Now, facing pressures from all sides of the community, Starr must find her voice and stand up for what’s right.

Despite the film already being well-known for those who have read the book, the film gained some attention earlier this year when a video of Kian Lawley, who at the time filmed his role as Starr’s boyfriend, was seen saying the n-word multiple times in a YouTube video. 20th Century Fox announced they would recast the role and refilm, and the role was taken up by Riverdale star KJ Apa.

Starring Amandla Stenberg (Everything Everything), Regina Hall (Scary Movie), Russell Hornsby (Grimm), Issa Rae (Insecure), KJ Apa (Riverdale), Algee Smith (The New Edition Story), Sabrina Carpenter (Girl Meets World), Common (Suicide Squad), Megan Lawless (Table 19) and Anthony Mackie (Avengers: Infinity War).

The Hate U Give hits theatres October 19th 2018.
