The Good Place Recap: 4.04 ‘Tinker, Tailor, Demon, Spy’

The Good Place Tinker, Tailor, Demon, Spy

Written by Gabriella Gamez

Hello, fellow humans! The fourth episode is arguably the best episode of season four so far! Let’s recap all the wild events together!

The episode begins with the gang playing Magic Pictionary with members of the experiment in order for everyone to get to know each other better. When it’s Chidi’s turn, he is (predictably) nervous about his drawing skills. Chidi draws a hideous horse monster that comes to life, which quickly ends the game for the night.

The gang returns to Mindy’s house to work on their next plan. Eleanor is ready to pull an all-nighter, but Michael thinks they’re due for some relaxation time. Their arguing is soon interrupted when a message appears that there is an unknown visitor on the train tracks. They meet a cloaked figure who turns out to be Glenn, a demon from the Bad Place. He says that none of the other demons know he’s here, and wishes to speak with Eleanor alone. When she refuses, he makes an announcement that sows doubt within the group: Michael is actually Vicky in a Michael suit, and is secretly sabotaging the experiment.

Eleanor has a sidebar with Michael, saying she has a plan to make Glenn think they distrust him. The gang circles Glenn to ask some questions. They don’t want to call the Judge before cornering Glenn for answers to some very important questions.

The Good Place Jason

Glenn seems to have had a change of heart, saying he always believed that everyone in the Bad Place was bad and could never change, but he doesn’t know if he believes that anymore. Plus, Sean is super mean, and Glenn is sick of it. Glenn further explains that the Bad Place’s end game is to turn the gang against each other. He even shows them pictures of Vicky wearing the Michael suit, which just look like pictures of Michael. But Glenn further explains that he helped make the suit, and that Sean called Michael to show him the suit. Eleanor says that Michael definitely would’ve told them about the suit if Sean had called him, and Glenn says Janet can pull up the phone record to prove it’s true. That’s when Michael reveals that he actually did receive a call and knew about the Michael suit and didn’t tell the gang.

Eleanor begins to truly distrust Michael, but doesn’t want to call the Judge to reset the experiment yet. She separates Michael and Glenn to figure out the truth herself. She talks with the rest of the gang to see what they think, and Jason says to trust Michael. Eleanor argues that Michael has been acting strange lately, like his suggestion to have a slumber party. Then they go back to talk to Michael, who confesses that the Bad Place called him to say if the experiment failed, Sean would torture the humans while wearing a Michael suit, which caused him to crumble from the pressure at the start of the experiment. Eleanor is unsure whether to believe Michael after all the lies he’s told them.

Eleanor asks Janet if there’s a way to tell if Michael is lying, so she says she will try to make a lie detector. Meanwhile, the gang goes to talk to Glenn and to share their distrust, saying that this stunt is no different from the one they pulled with Linda. But this is where Glenn says what happened with Linda was all part of their plan. While Janet was putting the demon on the train back to the Bad Place, a bunch of demons came out to abduct Michael and leave Vicky in a Michael suit in his place. Eleanor says she knew something was weird about Linda, but that Michael had just dismissed her.

Eleanor comes up with a new plan to discover the truth. She tells Michael to take off his suit. If he takes it off and he’s a demon underneath, he’s the real Michael. But if he takes it off and it’s Vicky wearing a human suit, then Glenn was right all along. Michael immediately refuses for two reasons: 1. He’s six thousand feet tall and everyone in the experiment would see him, effectively ruining the experiment and 2. He doesn’t want the gang to see him as the demon he truly is.

The Good Place Eleanor

Janet appears with what she believes is a demon lie detector. They use it on Glenn to practice, and he immediately blows up into nothing but goop. Frustrated with the entire situation, Eleanor decides to go for a walk and runs into Chidi, who is practicing drawing horses. He says he felt like he made the world worse with that horse, and he only wants to make it better.

Janet gathers up all the Glenn goop and talks with Jason about her guilt over blowing him up. Jason says, “I’m here for you, girl,” and Janet thanks him.

Eleanor returns and is ready to talk to the Judge to reset the experiment, saying that without knowing the truth for sure, a small part of her will always distrust Michael. Tahani argues that starting over sounds exhausting since they’ve gotten to know the humans, and Michael says he has a better plan. He’s going to blow himself so the others can continue on with the experiment.

In the biggest surprise of the episode, Jason steps up and solves everyone’s problems by handcuffing Janet, who transforms into Bad Janet.

Jason discovered that Janet wasn’t really Janet is because after he called her “girl”, she didn’t say “not a girl”, like she usually does. Bad Janet reveals that while on the train to bring back the demon impersonating Linda, Bad Janet marbleised real Janet and took her place. Tahani says that all of this makes sense because Janet’s ideas were all counterproductive and that she was the one who got the gang to doubt Eleanor’s leadership skills. Eleanor no longer doubts Michael because he was willing to blow himself up to save the experiment.

The episode ends with Jason and Michael leaving for the Bad Place to save Janet.
