The Gifted Recap: 2.10 ‘eneMy of My eneMy’

The Gifted 2.10 eneMy of My eneMy

Happy New Year and it’s certainly a good start to the year for us mutant friends. The Gifted is back with an action packed episode, which sees the flashback showing us the “three musketeers” – Lorna, John, and Marcos playing pool at a bar three years ago in Atlanta. John addresses the others that he knows that they are together and reminds them that their fight will not be an easy one and one day they will depend on each other.

Unfortunately John was right. At the end of the last episode he was captured by the Purifiers. Turner puts him in chains and demands answers about the mutant underground and the terrorist attacks. John tells him it is actually the opposite; they are fighting for freedom and against the mutant uprising. So Turner turns John’s mutant power, super hearing, against him and tortures him with heavy metal music through headphones.

John then tells Turner the truth, that the Inner Circle is behind everything and that Lorna and Andy have changed their loyalty, because “he couldn’t make them believe”. Turner finally believes what John is saying, but right in that moment Lorna and Marcos are halfway through the area starting the attack on the purifiers to rescue John.

Meanwhile, the Strucker’s are on their way back home when Marcos calls them to come back and tells them what has happened. Marcos has called everyone on the mutant underground, but those who picked up, don’t know anything about where John could be held. Then Marcos has the idea to ask the Inner Circle for help and use Faint and his phone to call Lorna.

Marcos knows if they don’t help him John would die because he would never talk about the underground. Back at the Inner Circle HQ, Lorna starts to search for John and tells Andy about it. They decide to help their former friends behind Reeva and the Frost sisters’ back.

When they arrive, there are some mixed emotions as Kate and Reed are happy to see Andy and have their hopes up that he could come back for good, while Lauren is distant. Clarice doesn’t know what to think about it and Marcos just wants to get it over with.

A lot has happened and some things are clearer now. Turner is a broken man who, behind his emotional wall still suffers from losing his daughter and his wife, losing his future. I do think that he is blinded by it and therefore the purifiers seem to be the solution for him. “We are protecting people who do not want to be protected and we are both paying for it”, is what Turner says to John and I think there is a bit of truth in it. After Lorna pops up on the surveillance camera, he loses it and has a breakdown in which he shoots John several times. One more time and he would have been dead.

And here we have a twist. Mr and Mrs Strucker think that since Andy reaches out through his dreams to Lauren, that he is there to help rescue John and stay for good. However, they then witness how Andy gets very angry – to put it lightly – and starts to act like Rebecca. He almost kills one of the purifiers who wanted to shoot Lauren in the back.

In the end, we see Andy and Lauren train, each of them preparing for something different. Fenris divided. Andy, to kill everyone who wants to harm mutants. Lauren, to destroy the Inner Circle because that is the only way to get Andy back. To be honest, a behaviour like that does not disappear because an organisation is gone. I think, it could be too late to get this idealism out of his head.

My favourite scene was between Lorna and Marcos as they were both trying to hate each other but they were actually doing quite the opposite. “We love each other, we always will, but we will never see eye to eye about what we believe,” is how Lorna puts it. But, I do not think that real love can be torn apart just because of political attitude forever.

Thanks to Marcos we have learned that “they are just cars, Andy. They have 4 doors and they drive,” no matter if those cars are full with weapons and bulletproof vests and Clarice watching over John and have to wait for the next episodes to know how he is.
