The Gifted Recap: 1.10 ‘eXploited’

Written by Melissa Platt

‘eXploited’ starts off with an election campaign where the senator is trying to get re-elected and trashes mutants and how they abuse their ‘so-called’ abilities. We see that Esme is working for the senator and find out that this is a flashback from two months ago. Esme then gets a memo with her ability telling her to get out because Sentinel Services is coming.

Returning to the present day, Lorna wants to go in right away without a plan to save their friends, but Caitlyn and Reed say no and everyone winds up in an argument. Johnny then stops them and says they need to work as a team. Later, Caitlyn and Reed come up with ideas to get their kids back, and Esme is listening in, but she is reading Reed’s mind and finds out all that has happened to him before he came to the underground. Esme then becomes very insistent on suggesting they should use Turner to try to get their kids back. Caitlyn and Reed then decide to secretly leave to go to Turner, however, Esme overhears them. She then goes and tells Marcos and Lorna that they have left and disobeyed them, much to Esme’s delight.

Meanwhile, Andy is agitated about wearing the collar so Lauren tries to calm him down even though she’s scared as well. Turner questions Sonya who isn’t telling them what their plans were while he reminds her about taking his memories from him and she apologises, but Turner won’t accept it. Turner also reveals the project he and Campbell have been working on before walking out and listening on Clarice’s interrogation. Turner then calls Campbell and we find out that he is out of the hospital, but he wants Turner to send the mutants over to him, including the Strucker children. Back in there, Sonya talks with Clarice about how she used to erase people’s memories, so they wouldn’t hurt anymore and how she wants to do the same to them. Clarice reassures her that it will be okay, and they will get through this.

Lorna is shaken about her friends being gone and Marcos says they are working on it. Marcos tells her she needs to be nicer to the Strucker’s because they are going through a hard time, but Lorna makes the point that they need to take a stand so that doesn’t happen to their kid.

Campbell wants Andy and Lauren so Turner obliges. He forces them into testing to see if they really are the descendants of the other siblings. Lauren and Andy refuse to try, so Campbell shocks them with the collar. Campbell then brings Clarice and Sonya to the Strucker children and threatens to kill them if they don’t cooperate. Sonya keeps telling them to not help, but Campbell shoots her and she dies. He then threatens to shoot Clarice, and so they use their ability and destroy the ‘undestroyable’ room they were in.

Turner is at home with his wife, when Reed and Caitlyn show up on the doorstep with a gun in hand. Turner’s wife makes him listen when Reed brings up their daughter to show how hard it is for them and tells them they need to shut it down, but Turner isn’t biting. Reed tries to say that this isn’t fair to the children, but Turner says at least their kids are still alive. Caitlyn stops Reed from continuing, and explains what she saw happen to Chloe, they then leave. Paula (Turner’s wife) stops Turner from going after them because she doesn’t like what he has done.

Lorna and Marcos tell Johnny about the Struckers leaving. Esme tells them of ‘their’ plan and they all decide they need a plan to figure things out and get everyone back. Lorna and Marcos talk in private, and once again Lorna is insistent on jumping when they get the chance. Lorna tells him that they need to get them out so they don’t sit in prison, but Marcos brings up the Cartels and how he knows of death, but Lorna says she can’t live in fear.

Lauren feels like she betrayed Sonya because they used their ability even when she said no. Campbell gets the lab report and concludes they now have a good weapon. Back at the underground, an inside source (Shatter) tells Johnny that Sentinel Services is on the move to take the mutants back to their prison, and so they start to make a plan to get them back. Esme tells them to send her because she can read the guards minds, and it could be an advantage. They immediately head over to Trask and Shatter tells them they are getting ready.

Caitlyn and Reed go back to the underground and are questioned about what they did, but they tell them that Esme was the one who told them to do it. As Marcos listens in on Turner’s request to the outside guards, Esme sneaks up behind and tasers unconscious him and continues with her plan. Esme forces all the guards to turn off their callers and controls many to shot themselves and others, including Turner’s partner. We see that there are three different Esme’s, two from the transport bus and the one from the underground. She then takes all the prisoners off the bus, but we are left unsure about where.
