The Gifted Recap: 2.02 ‘unMoored’

The Gifted 2.02 Unmoored

40 minutes of intense emotions will certainly lead to an empty tissue box! After 14 episodes, we finally get a glimpse of Johnny’s past. After being dishonourably discharged from the Marines, he began taking drugs and started a career as a cage fighter to pay the bills. Sounds familiar, right? Wolverine flashback, everyone!

Johnny the gets picked up by Evangeline Whedon (Erinn Ruth), a mutant attorney—who has similar powers to Mystique’s—who worked for the X-Men before they disappeared. She had a brief appearance in Season 1 during a flashback scene in which she recruited Lorna for the Mutant Underground. Now, she wants to recruit Johnny to lead it, give him a purpose, and away from drugs.

Back in the present, we see a suffering Marcos who is building something for his kid while Johnny is trying to be there for his best friend. Johnny then offers to him that he can reach out to Evangeline in hopes that she can help to find the Inner Circle.

Well, Evangeline does not want to help because she’s making Johnny responsible for what happened in Atlanta. However, she traced the bank transfers of the Inner Circle and warned Johnny, Kate, and Marcos about Reeva and that they may not come out of it alive, but perhaps a mutant separatist could help them. This conversation did not help Johnny at all as he does not need anyone to point out that he failed. He already feels responsible for every death and every person he lost while leading the underground. Without Clarice being there for Johnny and seeing through the wall he has built around him, he would feel more lost as he already does.

Meanwhile, Reeva is not pleased with the headline of the massive blackout during Dawn’s birth which is all over the news. She planned a cover up in involving the Frost Sisters, but surprisingly, Esme has doubts and does not want to kill more people because in her opinion it is not necessary.

As for the Strucker’s, they are dealing with a lot of different problems all at once. Kate and Reed are constantly fighting if they should look for Andy or not. After all, they have two children and not one.

Reed still has not told anyone about his mutant power, but he is working on finding out about them in his father notebook while Lauren is reminding him that it is okay to not feel okay. And he sure has to get to know quickly if he is, because after another emotional imbalance, we see what Reed’s power is and it is not an easy one to handle.

But has anyone asked Lauren how she is feeling with her parents fighting all the time and dealing with the fact that Fenris had killed dozens of people? And there is that dream again, which feels more like a prophecy that Fenris belongs together, but at the same time will kill them both. This time, Andy has the dream too.

It does not help that Andy has his first training for Reeva’s first operation and fails because he keeps thinking about the dream and what it means. “Our power tells the truth, even if we don’t,” as Reeva is pointing out, but Andy does not want to tell her the truth.

In seek of help, he goes to Lorna, who have seemed to build up a nice friendship, but Lorna is 100% on Reeva’s side. This is why Andy is buys a burner phone and tries to reach Lauren, but Reed picks up and he hung up. The only problem is that he does not know that he was followed.

So when he gets back to the HQ, Reeva is determined to get rid of Andy, but Esme tries to talk some sense into her. The second Reeva wants to use her powers, Andy confesses what bothers him and after that, he can fully use his powers again.

The episode ends with Johnny punching an old truck. Marcos and Kate, another friendship built on sadness, sit on the rooftop drinking a bottle of champagne together and toasting to the baby. Who could understand Marcos better than her? Later, alone on the roof, he uses the broken champagne bottle and he sends a green light into the rainy night sky in hopes that Lorna would see it, and she does.

The episode raised some questions and now have to wait a week to get answers to them: what is wrong with Dawn, will Agent Turner come back to the Mutant taskforce, and who is that mutant separatist?
