The CW released the Season 5 trailer for The Flash at San Diego Comic-Con 2018 and it features the new villain Cicada, Barry and Iris’ daughter from the future, Nora West-Allen, and a Flash ring!
At the end of season 4, after defeating Clifford DeVoe/The Thinker, Barry and the rest of The Flash gang celebrated not only saving the world, but the birth of Joe and Cecile’s newborn daughter, Jenna. However, the celebrations were interrupted by a mysterious stranger crashing the party who revealed herself to be Nora West-Allen, Bary and Iris’ daughter from the future, and she’s now stuck while also needing her parents help.
The trailer features a very worried Barry who says, “Nora shouldn’t be here. She could Marty McFly herself right out of existence. She needs to be with her parents 30 years from now. Not us now.” However, Nora also brings with her the highly anticipated Flash ring, which is a “fan favourite” according to Nora.
During the panel, executive producer Todd Helbing teased that there will “be a lot of deaths this season.” Some other highlights from the panel for the upcoming season included a LGBTQ character, an episode featuring both Gorilla Grodd and King Shark in the second half of Season 5, learning why and how Killer Frost got her powers, and Cisco’s powers will be challenged in a perilous situation.
Tom Cavanaugh talked about his new character, “we’re going to kick off the season with a newer Wells who has come to join these people.” Sherloque Wells is “a very intelligent human being who is maybe not to be trusted.”
The CW also made the announcement that Chris Klein (American Pie) would be playing this season’s big bad, Cicada, who is described as a “grizzled, blue-collar everyman whose family has been torn apart by metahumans.” He’s the show’s second non-speedster Big Bad, following Season 4’s The Thinker. In DC comics lore, Cicada starts out as David Hersch—he murders his wife during a thunderstorm and then attempted to take his own life, only to be struck by lightning. This then gives him the ability to absorb the life force of others and during this, he has a vision that signals his own immortality and eventually the resurrection of his wife. However, Helbing explained that Cicada is not so much a cult leader like the comics, but instead “his powers present a challenge for Team Flash that they’ve never had to deal with before.”
The Flash returns for Season 5 on Tuesday October 9th at 8/7c with the Season 2 premiere of Black Lightning afterwards.
