‘The Backups’ Trio Get Their Own Playlists

Guest post written by author Alex de Campi
Alex de Campi is a New York-based writer with an extensive backlist of critically-acclaimed graphic novels including Eisner-nominated heist noir Bad Girls (Simon & Schuster) and Twisted Romance (Image Comics) and her debut prose novel The Scottish Boy (Unbound). She lives with her daughter, their cat, and a Deafblind pit bull named Tango.

Meet the stars of my latest YA graphic novel The Backups! Three very different teens thrown together to sing backup on a big summer pop tour… can they get it together? Or will a forbidden crush, a star’s dark secret, and an unexpected musical rivalry have them thrown offstage before opening night is over? Get to know our three girls… and their current Spotify playlists!

Jenni is from New Jersey & loves pop music. She’s the only one of The Backups who’s really hoping to make a career as a pop singer. She’s super outgoing and friendly but sometimes comes on a little strong because her enthusiasm gets the better of her. Secretly, she’s a little insecure. If you dig bouncy pop music from artists like Lizzo, BTS and Rina Sawayama, Jenni’s playlist is for you:

Maggie is an ace (in all senses) drummer from Michigan who’s super into metal & darkwave. She’s spiky, doesn’t have many IRL friends, and… is kinda lonely, tbh. She’d rather push people away than get hurt. If you like dark, heavy beats from artists like Perturbator, Rezz, and HEALTH, Maggie’s playlist is for you:

Lauren hails from Oakland, CA and loves anything a little retro and upbeat, and classical music. She plays cello and was hoping for a spot at prestigious conservatory, but didn’t get in. She’s very organized and precise and a little scared of taking risks. Lauren’s go-to comfort playlist ranges from Prince and Nina Simone to serpentwithfeet and classical composer Virgil Thompson:
