Summer Lovin’ Book Genres

Summer Books Reading
Written by Ryan Jones

From personal experience of being a book blogger for two years I always thought contemporary books were the most common reads during summer time. People often snap pictures and write blurbs about Sarah Dessen novels or Jenny Han’s To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, oh, and we cannot forget John Green.

Despite my beliefs and experience, there really is no one hot genre—they are all steamy on a bookworm’s TBR lists and current reads.

Painter and reader Anabel Ouellet is 22 and lives in Quebec, Canada. She commonly uses Goodreads as her blogging platform and has been reading since the age of 14.

“I am an only child so I was always in my room reading to escape. My dad was taking me to the public library so I could have all the books I wanted and I think that’s how I fell in love,” says Ouellet.

But which genre is her summer love?

“I love reading poetry and young adult since it’s a little more soft and easy to read. I mostly read happy books in the summer and darker books in the fall and winter.”

She says a lot of her friends read chick-lit books in the summer and says summer is the time of year where people who do not normally read finally get some reading done, due to extra time on their hands.

Rebecca Van Sluijs is also a part-time reader and painter attending law school. Her predominant platform for book blogging is Instagram, @areadersrambles.

Van Sluijs says she tries to read between 20 to 30 books per month and often finds her nose in between the pages of classical novels, though, if she has time in between these books, likes to fit in fantasy.

One point for poetry, one point for classic literature and one point for fantasy.

Her hobbies are podcast listening, shopping, spending time with friends and of course, reading. Kayla Plutzer, @kaylareadsbooks on Instagram, says she has been reading since childhood and tries to read about 30 books in the summer.

“Young adult contemporary and romance novels—I love these year-round but more so in the summer because it’s this feel-good time where all the magical love things happen,” says Plutzer.

One point for romance. One point for contemporary. The scores are equal.

It is suffice to say that all genres are hot this summer and only you can judge which ones are hottest based off personal interests.

What will your hot genre be?

Contemporary?

Fantasy?

Romance?

Poetry?

The possibilities are endless.
