Shadowhunters Recap: 3.01 ‘On Infernal Ground’

Shadowhunters Season 3 On Infernal Ground

Freeform’s Shadowhunters has returned for its third season, which more than likely has come as a surprise to some viewers and fans of the original content. That being said, season 2 did take a significant step forward in almost every area from acting and CGI, to plot lines and dialogue so we’re intrigued to see just how season 3 may develop.

During the season 2 finale, Valentine managed to raise the Angel Raziel with the three mortal instruments, however, Jace and Clary were able to catch up to him just in time. Unfortunately, things didn’t go to plan and Valentine killed Jace, leading to Clary getting the upperhand and stopping Valentine by killing him. Raziel was still raised and offered a wish to which Clary requested for Jace to be brought back to life, and it was granted. At the end of the episode, we were treated to an anti-climatic ending with the escaped demons forming into the body of a woman who calls a dead-looking Jonathan her son.

P.S – If you need to catch up on Season 2, we created a great season recap!

The third season kicks off with an anti-climatic opening with the same bloodied and naked woman speaking to a deceased Jonathan and drawing power from the ley lines in the area, supposedly to bring him back.

Shadowhunter Lies, Werewolf Drama, and Downworlder Secrets

We are then taken to Alicante where Clary receives the angelic power rune, the official Shadowhunters rune. Inquisitor Herondale commends her on preventing Valentine from receiving a wish, however, Clary and Jace exchange guilty looks as she was granted the wish of bringing Jace back. Luckily, Alec knows something is up as he felt Jace die and the parabatai rune disappeared. One would wonder why this wasn’t touched on more in the first episode—are Jace and Alec still parabatai? Jace visits the graves of his parents, Stephen and Celine Herondale, for the first time and Clary wants to tell Alec the truth, however, Jace doesn’t want to.

Back in New York, Luke’s partner Ollie has been trying to see Luke and keeps visiting Jade Wolf after her discovering Luke’s little secret. After much hiding, he decides to go ahead and talk to her, so Ollie shows him a claw mark she received a few years ago and she’s been researching ever since. Naturally he claims insanity, and tells her to take a few days off.

Alec later visits Magnus and he’s surprised to see him with a client again, but it seems Magnus has been dismissed from being the High Warlock of Brooklyn because he offered the warlocks’ support to the Seelie Queen. He claims he is happy, so Alec later tells Magnus that he has been offered a position offered a position on the council as a delegate to the new Consul, Jia Penhallow. Unfortunately, Alec would have to move to Idris and Magnus claims it wouldn’t change anything.

Demons On The Loose

A woman visits the nursery ward of a hospital and wants to hold a baby, she informs a nurse that she is barren and blames Adam who cursed her. I don’t know if I missed something, but I feel like the bloodied woman and this woman (known as Lilith) should have been clarified at the start of the episode. Perhaps the blood could have pooled off her to reveal her “human” form. Moving on. The same nurse is then attacked by a demon who breathes some kind of demonic force into him and leaves.

The nurse returns to greet his wife, when he suddenly slices her throat and walks away. Ollie and Luke are on the scene of the dead wife the next day, and Luke’s not overly thrilled to see her there. Luke sees that the body has black veins emanating from the wound. Later, the nurse turns up to visit Lilith and she welcomes him to the Church of Talto and slices his neck to pour blood into an altar.

Weapons, Drugs and Songs

Izzy has been appointed the new weapons master and wants to help Clary find her signature weapon while also enquiring about why she didn’t make a wish. Clary is then drawn to dual kindjals, which fans of the book series will be familiar with.

Clary visits Jace and the two make out when the door opens to reveal Jonathan telling Jace to kill her. A fight breaks out between the trio and Clary is stabbed by Jace, but then he awakes from his nightmare, although he keeps seeing Jonathan and then actually wakes properly.

Raphael meets with Magnus for dagget root, which is a vampire tranquilizer and claims it is for a new vampire who is having trouble adjusting. However, Magnus knows there’s something else up.

Meanwhile at the Seelie Court, Simon is singing away with his guitar to a group of faeries. He enquires about why he is there, and he is then taken to the Wander Woods and tied to a tree. It is there that Meliorn uses a spear to burn a mark into forehead claiming only a Daylighter can survive the ceremony. Yes, a big deviation from the book, but lets just see where this goes.

Tension and Sugar Cravings Rise

Clary and Jace spar to break in her kindjals and it comes across as somewhat fun and filled with tension, until he accidentally knicks her with his blade and freaks out.

The Shadowhunters are now are on the case of the demonic attacks, so Izzy, Alec and Jace visit the hospital to see Catarina Loss and learn more about the nurse. She asks about Magnus who is beside himself about losing his title, which is news to Alec.

It’s also revealed that Izzy has been attending meetings and she’s turned to sugar as a way of coping. She meets a handsome doctor by the name of Charlie near a vending machine and he’s clearly interested, but she’s trying not to be. Let’s make this happen. Stat.

Luke sees Clary’s kindjals and reveals that it’s Valentine’s dagger and the other was Jocelyn’s – the light and the dark are part of her according to Luke. Clary goes to tell Luke about Jace when they’re interrupted as Ollie is tracking the nurse.

Following him, she fires multiple bullets except they don’t slow him down. Luckily a werewolf attacks him and Clary arrives to throw her kindjal causing the demon to bend over backwards to show us what super poor CGI looks like. She draws a light blasting rune several times and eventually lands a killing blow, which Lilith feels.

Releases, Reveals and Romance

Luke reveals that “all the legends are true” to Ollie, while the Seelie Queen ends up letting Simon go, but won’t tell him what she did. Simon then visits Maia and she knows that Simon is lying, so he has to tell her what happened.

Alec and Magnus hang out at Hunter’s Moon and he makes Magnus reveal how he really feels. Magnus then also tells him that he doesn’t want Alec to move to Idris, but he didn’t want to stop Alec from living his life.

Meanwhile, Clary comes into Jace’s room and he’s not too sure if she’s real or not, so naturally kissing ensues again when Jace hears Jonathan’s voice, except it seems to be real. Lastly, we also see Raphael dripping some of the dagget root into a woman’s mouth and then Lilith meets with the demon and asks for him to bring her more disciples
