Shadowhunters Recap: 3.05 ‘Stronger Than Heaven’

Shadowhunters Stronger Than Heaven Malec

Last week’s episode of Shadowhunters saw Simon find a new roomie in the form of Jordan Kyle; Raphael gets kidnapped by Heidi and rescued by Izzy and Clary; and Jace has trouble remembering things due to Lilith constantly taking control of him to do her bidding as the Owl.

Magnus the Warlock and Boyfriend

At the end of the previous episode, Lilith turned up at Magnus’ door to ask for his help. Thankfully, he’s a little suspicious of her until she claims to be a friend of Ragnor Fell’s. She wants something that will help someone fall out of love—uh oh, it seems she wants to break up Clace. Apparently the elixir requires a final ingredient: a sliver of soul from the one they desire. Back at her place, Lilith then performs a summoning ritual so a demon can fetch a sliver of Clary’s soul.

Afterwards, Magnus looks through a box of trinkets, which he quickly shuts when Alec appears. Wearing one of Magnus’ shirts, Alec suggests he moves in, but Magnus isn’t onboard just yet as they’ve only been seeing each other for two months.

Alec’s suspicions get the better of him and he looks at the box Magnus moved and it seems it’s filled with trinkets of his past loves. At the Institute, a Shadowhunter thanks Alec for paving the way for “Shadowhunters like him” as he has always had to keep his private life hidden.

This causes a guilty conscience so Alec comes clean and apologises, but Magnus knows already and accepts his apology. Alec brings up George, however, he’s been dead for over a century. Magnus explains that the contents is for each relationship he has had and that he’s outlived. Alec seems conflicted about just being another memento and Magnus makes the argument stop, but it seems it still weighs on Alec.

Izzy Gets Her Mundane On

Izzy needs something mundane to wear so she raids Clary’s closet for her date with Charlie the doctor. They go to dinner and she says she makes jewellery as she’s fashioned her red necklace into a bracelet. After they leave, her bracelet pulses and she has to leave him quickly as the demon that was summoned goes after Izzy instead. She stabs it with her snake staff, but it doubles and the fight continues until she kills both demons. Lilith feels the death, jumps out the window and turns into a demonic bat-like dragon as she will have to get her hands dirty.

Charlie finds Izzy in the alley and she claims she tripped so he takes her to the hospital for stitches. Izzy gets the stitches and she asks why he came looking for her. He explains he was concerned with all the killings lately, so she thanks him and gives him a sweet kiss on the cheek.

Touched By An Angel

Jace is thinking of going to the Silent Brothers for some mental health treatment, but Clary believes it isn’t necessary so she wants to try to talk to Ithuriel to see if he can help. Clary then visits Luke and comes clean about what happened at Lake Lyn with Raziel as she wants to speak with Cleophas, Luke’s sister.

Book fans will be happy to see that Luke takes Clary to his farm as Cleophas has been living there. Clary tells her about contacting Ithuriel, but it seems Cleophas is unable to do it after betraying her Iron Sisters. Cleophas believes Clary may be able to summon Ithuriel, but he could be angered by a summoning.

Cleophas, Clary and Luke draw a circle of adamas to help call Ithuriel before igniting her angelic rune and reciting an incantation. Ithuriel later appears to Clary and boy oh boy is he a sight! He knows why she has summoned him and he explains that returning from death left Jace vulnerable. He then explains that an evil has arrived and goes to tell her its name before a claw rips through his back and pulls out his heart sending a shockwave of energy.

It turns out it was Lilith’s true form and she rips a sliver of her soul out before Clary passes out.

A Werewolf, Shadowhunter and Vampire Walk Into A Bar…

At the Hunter’s Moon, Simon is upset because someone has cancelled his gig there. Jace is day drinking, reluctantly asks what happened and then offers to help him out, only because Clary cares.

Jace meets Kyle before he discusses with Simon about who might be messing with him. Jace is suspicious about how all Kyle’s stuff is perfectly suited to Simon, so he goes into Kyle’s room. Jace whips out his sword when Kyle turns up as Kyle has been growing wolfsbane—it turns out he is a werewolf. Kyle explains he is part of the Praetor Lupus, a secret organisation who intervene with Downworlders. Simon isn’t so thrilled that he is a ‘job’ so he leaves.

Jace goes to see Simon again and says he should take the help he can get. Simon returns to the apartment and he’s ready to play his gig, so he says Kyle can either help or leave.

Meanwhile, Jace goes to see Alec and says he will go to the Silent Brothers for treatment. At the Hunter’s Moon, Jace calls Clary who’s not picking up. Simon sings his little song when Jace is approached by a flirtatious Lilith before he turns her down. Slipping the elixir into the drink, Jace takes a sip and instantly forgets Clary.

Final Thoughts?

Well, the series has certainly taken a turn from the books and it seems some fans have been left upset about Jace forgetting Clary. I personally think it’s an interesting twist as their relationship did have many up’s and down’s, plus they did reveal much earlier than expected that they are not siblings. It’s beyond obvious that they will get back together in the end and there’s a few possible options: Magnus will restore the memories, they will fall back in love au naturel, or Clary will come up with a new rune to bring them back.

As for Magnus and Alec, as much as it was hard to see more conflict brought into their relationship, this issue was present within the book series and it only strengthened their relationship further.

Then there’s Izzy. While it’s great to see her finally being treated right, Charlie is a mundane and there’s only going to be tragedy there. Either he will be killed off or something will happen to him causing Izzy to be heartbroken and leave him to keep him safe.

It will be intriguing to see if the sliver of soul will present any issues for Clary too, along with what happens with Jace and Lilith!
