Best friends Kat and Olivia are ready to move on after the events of The Ex-Girlfriend Murder Club. Unbeknownst to her protective mother, Kat is using her chemistry knowledge to work in the police crime lab alongside her boyfriend, Detective Adrian Birch, and lawyer Olivia is ready to get back into the dating field, perhaps with Adrian’s handsome new detective partner. Kat and Olivia quickly get pulled into another case when Mandy Thorne, host of the revenge podcast “Dish Served Hot”, insists that someone is trying to kill her and that Kat and Olivia are the only ones who can help. When a death does occur at one of Mandy’s podcast meet-ups, all of the people whose lives were ruined as a result of Mandy’s revenge podcast become suspects and the best friends need to enlist the help of their third member, Elle, to help solve the case.
The Mortal Enemy Murder Club is a cosy mystery thriller and the second book in the Hu Done It series, so readers will need to have read The Ex-Girlfriend Murder Club before picking up the sequel. The Mortal Enemy Murder Club is perfect for fans of Only Murders in the Building as well as books like the Finlay Donovan series by Elle Cosimano, Every Time I Go on Vacation, Someone Dies by Catherine Mack, Dial A for Aunties by Jesse Q. Sutanto, and The Maid by Nita Prose. The Mortal Enemy Murder Club explores themes and topics like revenge, cheating, secrets and lies, culture, social norms, fame, family, friendship, trust, right versus wrong, incarceration, and identity.
First off, this cosy mystery weaves together an interesting case, great female friendship, a dash of romance, and some laugh-out-loud moments, making for an enjoyable read! It was great that the mystery in The Mortal Enemy Murder Club was connected to the case in the first book and that it involved many of the same characters, so it made it really easy to dive into the book without a lot of preamble. I really enjoyed Kat’s quirky personality and found her love of idioms (and the history behind them) to be interesting. Lastly, there is definitely the potential for more books in this series so I cannot wait to see what’s up next for “the mortal enemy murder club”!
Even though I enjoyed book two, I was much more invested in and surprised by the case in book one; so in comparison, I didn’t feel like I was as engaged in the plot of The Mortal Enemy Murder Club.
Overall, I’m loving the Hu Done It series and am excited to see what other adventures await Kat, Olivia, and Elle! If you’re looking for a cosy and humorous mystery series, then I highly recommend the series!
The Mortal Enemy Murder Club is available from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org, and other good book retailers, like your local bookstore, as of July 28th 2026.
