Review: Supernova by Marissa Meyer

Supernova by Marissa Meyer Review

Supernova by Marissa MeyerSupernova is a stunning conclusion to the Renegades trilogy. If you haven’t read Renegades or Archenemies, there are certainly spoilers ahead, so please do yourself a favour and go pick those up before you dive into this review. If you’ve already done so, be prepared for a world of reveals. This story manages to answer so many questions that we had from the previous books, and that ending just managed to be exactly what I felt the story needed to be. There was also a reveal that I wasn’t expecting and it makes me hope that we might get to jump back into this world one more time, whether that’s through a novella, or even another novel. Please do yourself a favour and go and get this book, because if you love superheroes, you’re going to love this series!

Alright, Archenemies ended in such a huge mess. Nova has finally acquired the one thing she needs to help Ace Anarchy, only to find out he’s been captured by the Renegades. Max was injured during Nightmare and Frostbite’s fight, and now Adrian’s out for blood. Now, they’re both struggling to maintain their alter-egos secret…but time isn’t on their side. As battles rage between their alter-egos and their secrets revealed, their biggest fears are only beginning to materialise. Anarchy is coming for Gatlon City.

Holy smokes. The anticipation of the end of this series was agonising. All year I perused Goodreads and saw fans theorising what they thought would happen and I sat there right alongside them, wondering what Marissa Meyer could possibly have in store. I was not disappointed in what I found. Renegades and Archenemies paled in comparison to Supernova in my opinion. In this third instalment, we lose those masks that our beloved heroes and villains are hiding behind, and are tackling something more complex than good vs. evil. This book becomes more introspective as Nova and Adrian both wonder if their cause is worth giving their everything. They face the consequences of their secret keeping and agonise over their love interests.

Let’s talk about growth for a moment, because I really do feel that I got to see Nova and Adrian grow and change quite a lot in Supernova. They’re also having to do it very quickly considering how everything is in a constant state of chaos. However, we can’t talk about growth without regression. There are a couple of characters in particular that I felt were going to come out of this with a different perspective and then toward the end seemed to dig in their heels come hell or high water.

I’m not going to spoil anything, but with any superhero story we lose characters that we love, and my heart wept for them. It just goes to show how much heart Marissa Meyer put into each and every one of these characters. Oscar by far took the cake in this one with his crush on a certain Renegade, and I just couldn’t help but squeal in delight in the efforts that he takes to reveal his feelings. It’s so maddeningly sweet. Of course, I can’t talk about romance and not mention Nova and Adrian as well. Their relationship was put through the ringer in this book, particularly because of everything that is happening with them and around them. I was happy with the way things ended, although I would love to know what other readers think about it.

This book gave me some serious trust issues with the amount of heartbreak and betrayal it left behind, but it’s also what really drove me to turn each page. I never felt like I knew what was going to happen next and I relished the feeling. The ending is messy, but in a way that it’s supposed to be. Things aren’t magically going to change overnight and that’s okay. The epilogue especially had me floored. I had to read it a couple of times to ensure that I was actually reading what was on the page. It has given me hope something more might emerge from this world. If not now, then maybe someday.

This book has to be a 10/10 for me. Marissa Meyer blew my expectations out of the water, and I’m certain that lovers of this series will undeniably agree. I cannot wait to see what new world she’ll throw us into, especially if it’s anything like the world of Renegades. Make sure to add it to your lists, because you won’t want to miss out.

Supernova is available from Amazon, Book Depository, and other good book retailers.
