Siren Freeform TV Series 2018

Freeform continues to test the waters with the premiere of their newest series Siren, which sees a darker version of mermaids come to life.

Siren takes us inside Bristol Cove—a coastal town known for its legend of once being home to mermaids. When the arrival of a mysterious girl proves this folklore all too true, the battle between man and sea takes a very vicious turn as these predatory beings return to reclaims their right to the ocean.

The series follows Ben, a bright marine biologist who finds himself drawn to a mysterious new girl Ryn, who is a strange young woman with a deep dark secret. Then there’s Maddie, who works with Ben as a marine biologist but is highly suspicious of the new girl; Xander, a deep-sea fisherman on a quest to uncover the truth; and Helen, the town eccentric who seems to know more about the mermaids than she lets on.

While you can only go so far with making opinions based purely on a trailer, the series does look intriguing. After Freeform’s hit supernatural drama Beyond last year and viewers continued interest in Shadowhunters, the network is most definitely exploring new waters. The trailer also doesn’t convey the typical Freeform ‘cheesiness’, which usually comes across through the acting and the selected dialogue. To a degree, the trailer seems reminiscent of one of the CW’s past shows, The Secret Circle and like many of these fantasy dramas, they all have the essential elements from the small town to the new kid and the kooky old woman! We won’t get our hopes too high, but we are liking what we see!

The series stars Alex Roe (The 5th Wave), Eline Powell (Game of Thrones), Fola Evans-Akingbola (An American Exorcism), Ian Verdun (Life’s a Drag) and Rena Owen (Star Wars II & III).

Catch the two-hour premiere of Siren March 29th (International Mermaid Day) on Freeform.
