With the cinemas closed until further notice, we can consider ourselves lucky that we have the internet because we are able to watch movies on different streaming platforms if we are craving a good movie.
Whilst a lot of movies have been pushed back to the end of 2020 or even to 2021, some studios have decided to put their movies straight on Prime, Netflix, Disney+, and other streaming platforms. We may not be able to see Fast and Furious 9 anytime soon, but that does not mean that we cannot see Vin Diesel in his latest movie Bloodshot. This movie is based on the comics published by Valiant Comics of the same name and kicks of the planned shared cinematic universe of their comics.
The US soldier Ray Garrison (Vin Diesel) comes back from his latest mission and plans on going on a holiday with his wife to the Amalfi Coast. However, one night they are kidnapped by a group of mercenaries who want to know what his last mission was about and because Ray cannot tell them anything, they kill him, after killing his wife in front of him.
Some time later, Ray wakes up at Rising Spirit Tech – a facility specialising in nanite technology. The owner, Dr. Emil Harting (Guy Pearce) explains to Ray that he tries to cybernetically enhance US soldiers whom would otherwise be invalids. Since no one claimed Ray’s body after his death, the military sent his body to RST and now Ray’s body is genetically enhanced. Speed, strength, and self-healing.
He is introduced to the few other patients who survived this procedure, former US Navy diver KT (Eiza González) and the two former soldiers, Jimmy Dalton (Sam Heughan) and Marcus Tibbs (Alex Hernandez).
During the procedure, Ray lost his memory, but after his memory was triggered by a specific song he heard, his memories slowly come back. He escapes the RST facility to go after the man who killed his wife and tracks him down in Budapest. After successfully killing him, he gets picked up by RST. It turns out that Harting is wiping Ray’s memories and reprogramming him over and over again for his own plan to eliminate his rivals.
When Ray is sent to the next guy on Harting’s list, the programmer Wilfred Wigans (Lamorne Morris) activates an EMP bomb, which stops the transmitter and therefore RST cannot control him anymore. After Wigans tells Ray what RST is doing to him and that his wife is still alive, but not his wife anymore. Ray then plans his revenge on RST.
I am not a big fan of IMAX or 3D because I think most movies do not need it, but this movie would have been perfect for it. The special effects are amazing, and it is full of action and awesome fight scenes.
The story may be simple and easy to follow – you get what is going on very quickly – but it is not over-the-top ridiculous. After KT is breaking the circle of reprogramming Ray ,an epic fight between him and Dalton ends the movie. Of course, in a movie like this, there are some scenes which are made to please the audience and I am one of them appreciating it.
