New York Times bestselling author Jayne Ann Krentz returns with the first novel of the Lost Night Files, an exciting new romantic suspense trilogy about a night that changed three women forever—but that none of them can remember. Read on to learn more about her latest release Sleep No More, writing, what’s next, and more!
Hi, Jayne! Can you tell our readers a bit about yourself?
Hello! I write romantic suspense with a psychic twist and I love what I do.
When did you first discover your love for writing?
I came to writing rather late compared to many authors. I was a reader first and I read a LOT. Still do. But at some point in my twenties I decided that I wanted to tell the stories my way. I didn’t think I could write better than anyone else, I just wanted my characters, my dialogue and my endings. It started out as a challenge, an adventure, an entertaining way to explore my creativity. But somewhere along the line it became a compulsion; an addiction. Now if I’m away from my writing for too long I get restless.
Quick lightning round! Tell us the first book you ever remember reading, the one that made you want to become an author, and one that you can’t stop thinking about!
The first book I remember was reading WINNIE-THE-POOH with my mother. The one that made me want to become an author was RESTOREE by Anne McCaffrey and the one I can’t stop thinking about is the one I’m writing right now. (The title is THE NIGHT ISLAND, in case you’re curious. It’s the next book in The Lost Night Files series).
Your latest novel, Sleep No More, is out now! If you could only describe it in five words, what would they be?
Amnesia! Murder! Podcast! Psychic talents!
What can readers expect?
The creepy Carnelian Sleep Institute (You can check in…), an illegal drug experiment designed to give the research subjects psychic talents, romance and murder. What can possibly go wrong?
Where did the inspiration for Sleep No More come from?
I’ve always wanted to do an amnesia plot and I’m fascinated with dreams. It all came together in this series.
Were there any favourite moments or characters you really enjoyed writing or exploring?
I’m partial to my hero because, hey, he’s an author on deadline. He needs to write but he’s got some serious sleepwalking issues. Let’s just say he has to chain himself to his bed at night.
You have published well over 100 books in your career so far. How do you find the motivation and the inspiration for all of these incredible stories, characters and worlds you have crafted?
Coming up with the ideas and the motivation is the easy part. The hard part is shutting them down for a while so that I can relax.
What’s next for you?
I’m writing the next novel in The Lost Night Files series, THE NIGHT ISLAND.
Lastly, are there any 2023 releases of yours that our readers should look out for?
I write romantic suspense under three names, Jayne Ann Krentz, Amanda Quick and Jayne Castle. Next up for me is one of my Amanda Quick novels in my 1930s Hollywood Glam world of Burning Cove. The title is THE BRIDE WORE WHITE. Out in May.
