Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: 1.06 ‘An Exorcism in Greendale’

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Episode 1.06

What would any witch story or dark series be without a possession? In this episode, we’re treated to Sabrina and her family, along with Ms Wardwell, tackling the demonic possession of Jesse Putnam who has been haunting Harvey, Roz, and Susie after they came into contact with him. But like all possessions, it doesn’t go as smoothly as it should.

During the previous episode, Sabrina and her family were trapped by a sleep demon who made them face their fears and nightmares. However, Ms Wardwell assisted Sabrina in waking up and she helped the rest of her family wake up.

Truth and Hauntings

Wardwell (Michelle Gomez) confirms she’s a witch, and Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka) is outraged she’s been spying on them. Wardwell then explains Edward asked her to look out for Sabrina as she was his acolyte and later his secretary. She tells a story of also being in love with a mortal and ex-communicated from her coven, and so she sought out Edward, who she later fell in love with.

It seems Uncle Jesse is haunting Harvey (Ross Lynch), Roz (Jaz Sinclair), and Susie (Lachlan Watson) with his burnt flesh and maggots. They later talk to Sabrina about Jesse and their nightmares, and Harvey’s a bit miffed Sabrina doesn’t believe him. She approaches Hilda (Lucy Davis) and Zelda (Miranda Otto) about a possible haunting, but they’re not particularly interested since it involves mortals, so Sabrina tries Ambrose (Chance Perdomo). Sabrina wants to astral project into Jesse’s room, but Ambrose won’t assist her so Sabrina does it herself. She learns the demon possessed Jesse as he was sinful, and he plans to corrupt everyone. His name is Maerceci, overlord of gluttony, who promptly vomits on Sabrina, but it goes through her projected body. However, Sabrina begins to choke and scream in pain so Salem gets Ambrose and he wakes her up. Ambrose realises the name isn’t Maerceci as demons apparently have a sense of humour, and he enjoys wordplay: ice cream.

Meanwhile, Hilda applies for a job at Dr Cerberus’ and Zelda checks on Lady Blackwood’s baby as apparently a witch pregnancy is 13 months.

A Demon Named Apophis

Sabrina apologises to Harvey and wants to go to the mines, which Harvey really doesn’t want her to do, but he decides he will go with her. While there, she finds a broken stone, but Harvey has gone another way when Wardwell turns up and recognises the stone as a trapping stone. She then realises Harvey is gone and finds Harvey curled up and scared of something, but Sabrina can’t see what he saw.

Jesse continues to taunt Susie for her ‘girl-boy’ nature, while Roz has an appointment about her eyesight, which is declining further, and Jesse taunts her about her faith.

Sabrina finds the demon, whose name is Apophis, and so Sabrina tries to find out more about demons at the Academy. Blackwood (Richard Coyle) tells her Apophis is a parasitic demon and will soon jump to another host it has been in contact with. However, witches aren’t able to perform exorcisms, which is how it would be banished. Naturally, Nick (Gavin Leatherwood) sticks his nose into Sabrina’s affairs, and even implies she could date two guys because she has two schools and two natures…

An Exorcism

Wardwell is visiting with Hilda and Zelda as she was concerned about Sabrina. According to Wardwell, Edward wrote an exorcism rite that witches can use and so Wardwell and Hilda will join Sabrina. They sneak into Jesse’s room and begin chanting, but Jesse begins to loosen and nearly attacks the trio when Zelda arrives to help them. The four witches expel the demon and throw it into the well with the trapping stone.

Blackwood goes to see them about the exorcism, but Zelda distracts him with the news that his wife is pregnant with twins. As for Ambrose, he is sad he couldn’t be part of the exorcism and that he hasn’t had Luke return his calls when Hilda receives a call and learns Jesse passed away. Sabrina talks to Wardwell sadly about Jesse passing when we see a flashback of Wardwell killing him, and then Wardwell becomes intrigued by Sabrina mentioning bringing down the Dark Lord. Also, all dressed up at her new job, Hilda serves Luke a coffee and adds an additional ingredient…

Overall Thoughts?

Viewers would definitely enjoy Sabrina, her aunties, and Ms Wardwell exorcising the demon with the ferocity and passion emanating out of them all. Thankfully, Hilda provided a bit of comedic relief with her attempting to get a job at Dr Cerberus’ and it really helps to break up the heavy tone of the series.
