2021 Golden Globe Film Winners

If the 78th Annual Golden Globe Awards proved anything, it’s that the show must indeed go on. In addition to delaying its ceremony date, the Golden Globe Awards, since the announcement of the nominations, have been shrouded in controversy: from its less-than-agreeable nomination of Sia’s problematic directorial debut Music, to the whispers that Emily in Paris bribed and pampered their way to a nomination, and, most notably, to the revelation that, of the ninety members that make up the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (the Globe’s governing board, essentially), there are zero Black members. Even the ceremony itself wasn’t without its hiccups, with winners’ videos being accidentally muted or falling victim to poor wi-fi signals.

That being said, the night had some golden moments: from Nomadland’s director Chloé Zhao’s historic win as the first Asian woman (and second woman ever) to win the prize for Best Director, to Chadwick Boseman posthumously winning Best Actor in a Motion Picture (Drama) for his work in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, to Amazon Prime Video becoming the first streaming service to win in the Best Motion Picture (Musical / Comedy) category for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.

As we move forward in awards season, the only thing that is certain is that nothing is, in actuality, certain.
