You Should Be Watching ‘Killjoys’

Killjoys TV Series

Would you like to go on an adventure into the wide unknown of the universe? Do you like stories about bounty hunters and having a good laugh while eating some popcorn? Then Killjoys might be the TV show you have to binge watch right away!

The Canadian space adventure drama series is co-produced by Space channel and Syfy and it first aired in June 2015. Each season has 10 episodes, which follows the Killjoys Dutch, her best friend John, and his brother D’avin. Now, after five seasons, their story has come to an end. As sad it is for the loyal fanbase, this makes it a perfect opportunity for all of you who have not yet watched it to start!

The Characters

Let me introduce to you Dutch, Yalena Yardeen (played by Hannah John-Kamen). She is a Level 5 RAC agent who was born a princess. Forced to grow up in a harem, she was secretly trained as an assassin by the RAC agent Khlyen and in fact there are two of her. Khlyen had a daughter named Aneela, who looks like Dutch’s twin. To not give too much away, we can describe the similarity as disturbing and Dutch’s heritage as surprising.

John “Johnny” Jaqobis (Aaron Ashmore) has been Dutch’s RAC partner for years and her best friend, who oversees everything technical during their missions and look after their spaceship controlled by the A.I. Lucy. While Dutch is the tough leader, Johnny prefers to take things easy.

The third member of the team is D’avin Jaqobis (Luke Macfarlane) who is a former soldier and Johnny’s older brother, who joins the team at the beginning of Season 1. Their relationship is almost non-existent due to some things which have happened in the past when the TV show starts, but they get the chance to work it out.

Killjoys is lucky to have a great cast where their chemistry captures the audience from the first second. There are ups and downs and in between some serious and dangerous moments, there are very light fun ones. You have friendship, love, and every surreal constellation of relationship and rivalry. It never gets boring with this crew.

Alongside these three, there are some recurring characters which you are going to love. Like Pree (Thom Allison), who is the owner of a bar in Old Town on Westerley. He seems like he could not hurt a fly, but little did we know that this charming guy was once a warlord and does know how to shut people down. He is full of the most magnificent surprises. Hands down, one of the best characters television has ever invented.

Dutch and Johnny’s Friendship

One of the major parts of the show is the friendship between Dutch and Johnny. For quite a long time it is not shown how they met and how they became best friends. Over the course of the series, we learn more about Dutch’s past. After she escaped a forced marriage and steals a spaceship, she had Johnny by her side. Johnny wanted to steal her ship and instead of fighting over it, they started to work as Killjoys. Being a bounty hunter is not the easiest way of life and having a partner like they have in each other is priceless.

For me, their friendship is one of the best on television at the moment. They trust each other completely and are always honest with each other. Both coming from a place where they felt alone and misplaced, they made their own family of outcasts.

The Deep Unknown – The Green vs. The Galaxy

Way before the plot of the series, Khlyen and his team colonise a new planet. There they found a green plasma which has the power to turn people to Hullen. The green gives them superhuman powers such as strength, reflexes, and fast healing. Another enhanced ability is that their minds are bonded. However, you can also use the green plasma as a non Hullen to access memories and use it as a spy tool. To be honest, as being the major red line through the series it is far too complex to explain it. There are different aspects and people who all have their own history with the green.

Despite other TV shows, the main heroes have to fight against a new villain every season, Killjoys has one big villain who is present the whole time and cannot be easily killed off.

Killjoys has a steady story telling which goes deeper into character development with every episode and does not lose itself in the process. While other shows tend to move far from their core story with time, Killjoys does the exact opposite and it is refreshing to know exactly what you can expect to see.
