After a brief teaser yesterday, the first trailer for Marvel’s The New Mutants is here and gives fans an idea of what happens when you combine mutants and a horror film.
The New Mutants follows a diverse group of teenage who discover they have extraordinary powers while held captive in a secret facility and must tackle their demons while trying to save themselves.
The team first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1982 and was co-created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod, although, this adaption looks to be a little different than its source material.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) said, “We are making a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe. There are no costumes. There are no supervillains. We’re trying to do something very, very different.”
The film features five mutants—Russian teen Magik, a sorceress that uses teleportation and discs to travel; Scots girl Wolfsbane, who must figure out how to reconcile her ability to turn into a wolf with her religious beliefs; Native American Danielle Moonstar; Brazilian ladies man Sunspot; and lastly, a Kentuckian code-named Cannonball. The group is ‘mentored’ by Dr. Cecilia Reyes (Alice Braga, I am Legend).
This film is one of three X-Men movies that Fox has scheduled to be released next year, along with Deadpool 2 and X-Men: Dark Phoenix.
Starring Anya Taylor-Joy (Split), Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones), Blu Hunt (The Originals), Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why), Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things), and Alice Braga (I Am Legend).
The New Mutants is scheduled for release on April 13th, 2018.
