Article contributed by Holly Angus

Excited for the return of The Handmaid’s Tale with season three returning on June 5th? No need to binge-watch last season! The Nerd Daily has you covered with our recap of what you need to remember!

Season 2 sees Offred escape with the help of her boyfriend and the Commander’s driver, Nick. She reaches an abandoned warehouse and spends two months in hiding before being captured and returned to the Waterford home. Her actions have serious consequences and she is in even more danger of abuse, violence, and seclusion than before her escape.

Meanwhile, a handmaid orchestrated a bombing at a Sons of Jacob meeting, which kills 30 handmaids and numerous Commanders, seriously injuring Commander Waterford. The act reaches Canada and Luke and Moira await to see if Offred was a casualty of the act.

The viewer sees the lives of Ofglen and Ofwarren during their time in the colonies. They are digging up some sort of radioactive substance under the ground and many are dying from related illnesses. After the bombing and losing so many handmaids, the girls are sent back to be handmaids in Gilead, thus reuniting with Offred.

The Eyes (Nick) are rewarded for their dedication by receiving a bride. Nick’s bride is Eden a 14-year-old girl who believes her duty is to bear a child for him, however, he has no interest because he loves Offred. After numerous times attempting to cater to Nick, Eden runs off with another younger man. Her actions are deemed adulterous and they are both drowned in a swimming pool in front of an audience.

Commander Waterford allows Offred to see her daughter Hannah. The reunion was emotional and Hannah vividly remembers being separated from her mother. After Hannah leaves, Offred is left in a home, hiding from the Waterfords and their guards. She has her baby alone in the house before being caught by the neighbours and returned to the Red Center.

As for the season finale, the wives of the Commanders unite to propose an amendment that their children have the right to read the bible. An idea that came to fruition after finding Eden’s abandoned bible with annotations throughout. Serena Joy reads the bible to the commanders at the meeting, a bold and prohibited act, hoping to set an example for their new baby. Serena is then arrested by her husband and dragged off by guards. She has a finger cut off as a consequence for her actions.

The Marthas then unite to help Offred and the baby escape. Serena intercepts them leaving and says goodbye to her daughter, allowing her to have a better future outside of Gilead.

As for Ofglen, she stabs Aunt Lydia and it is unknown if the wound was fatal or if she is still alive. Ofglen’s Commander takes her to an unknown location, she does not know if he will kill her for what she has done. Her Commander reunites her with Offred and the baby. Offred hands the baby off to Ofglen and tells her to call her Nicole (Serena’s name of choice) before shutting the doors to the get-away vehicle and staying behind in Gilead, with a look of revenge on her face.
