After Thursday night’s episode of The Good Place, it finally looks like our favourite soul squad is making some progress with the experiment! Let’s recap the events together, shall we?
We begin with Eleanor and Michael discussing what’s next on their agenda. We find out Brent has begun taking moral philosophy classes with Chidi and they note that the new humans are in good hands with Chidi, and that he’ll be able to teach them how to be better people in no time. But once Chidi meets up with them, they begin to worry he’s not taking the classes seriously enough.
Michael and Eleanor realise that by leading him to believe he’s in paradise has erased the high stakes from Chidi’s motivations. They begin to hatch a plan to torture Chidi into “stressful decision making”.
Tahani reaches out to John, the gossip blogger who wrote scathing articles about her on earth. She plans a spa day worthy of the celebrities they love to hate in an attempt to get closer to him, as well as to coax him into attending Chidi’s moral philosophy lectures. When he blows her off, Tahani must figure out a new way to get to John.
Eleanor and Michael approach Jason to help with Chidi. They send Jason to help crack him, and it’s another callback to season one! He poses as Jianyu the monk and confesses to Chidi that he doesn’t actually belong in the Good Place. Chidi’s limits are tested as he faces (for the millionth time, not that he knows it) the moral question of whether or not he should tell Eleanor and Michael the truth.
We flash forward to a week later, and see Chidi struggling to keep Jason’s “secret” safe. His stress skyrockets to a whole new level when Eleanor and Michael ask him to bring “Jianyu” to the neighbourhood’s Luau. Michael and Eleanor gather everyone around a bonfire to throw their stone into a bonfire, saying that the fire will create whatever the thrower’s heart most desires. Chidi struggles with Jason, who wants to his stone into the fire. He bypasses Chidi, and a motorcycle with Pamela Anderson’s boobs painted on the side appears from the fire. Chidi must take the blame in order to keep Jason’s “true identity” a secret.
Tahani approaches John again, appealing to an emotional side as she shares how much the articles he wrote hurt her. Her plan backfires when John takes a defensive stance.
She talks with Janet and realises how she can finally get through to John. She shares how lonely her celebrity life made her feel being obsessed with her status, and how it never made her happy. She asks John if they can start over and become friends, and he agrees.
Later on, a hyperventilating Chidi approaches Michael and Eleanor in their office. He is hesitant to confess the truth about Jason, and shares his dilemma with them. Eleanor says that adversity can lead to growth, so he should tell them what the problem is. Chidi says that it’s different from that, and shares that he feels as if he’s being punished. This leads Eleanor to break down, because she realises that her plan is hurting Chidi.
Ultimately, Chidi decides not to tell on Jason but help make him a better person. It seems that the new humans are right on track with Chidi’s help, and things are finally starting to look up for the experiment. Until the last end scene, when we see demons approaching the neighbourhood. Dun…dun…DUN!
