Hulu brings The Act, a new seasonal anthology series that tells startling, stranger-than-fiction true crime stories.
Based on a true story, the first season follows Gypsy Blanchard, a girl trying to escape the toxic relationship she has with her overprotective mother. Her quest for independence opens a Pandora’s box of secrets, one that ultimately leads to murder.
For those who don’t know, Gypsy suffers from a host of mysterious illnesses resulting in her being in a wheelchair. She seems younger than she is and her mother is her best friend as she depends on her entirely. As she grows up, she questions her illnesses and her sheltered life, which sees everything begin to unravel.
Nick Antosca and Michelle Dean co-created the series based on Dean’s original Buzzfeed article and serve as executive producers alongside Greg Shephard and Britton Rizzio. The Act is produced by Universal Content Productions.
The series stars Joey King (The Kissing Booth) as Gypsy Blanchard, Patricia Arquette (Medium) as Dee Dee Blanchard, Chloë Sevigny (American Horror Story) as Mel, AnnaSophia Robb (Bridge To Terabithia) as Lacey, and Calum Worthy (Austin & Ally) as Nick.
The new series premieres March 20th on Hulu with the 6 subsequent episodes streaming weekly.
