Written by Ayushi Kumari
Remarkable for its dazzling cast and their strong performances, Greta Gerwig’s Little Women refreshes the energy of Louisa May Alcott’s literary classic. From the very beginning, the movie establishes the prejudice that Jo March is up against as a woman, the Victorian societal prejudice that stressed upon girls the feminine virtues of modesty, gracefulness, delicacy, chastity, purity, and domesticity. Gerwig’s adaptation of the novel gives a glimpse into how life-affirming and soul-stirring cinema can get. She allows the four sisters, Jo, Amy, Meg, and Beth to colour their own world with beautiful brushstrokes as compared to their literary precedents. The most striking feature of the film is its ending. Alcott followed the Victorian convention and married her heroine off and so does Gerwig. However, the last scenes of the film do not show Jo running to kiss Bhaer soaked in rain but embracing the satisfaction of her book being born, the pages being sewn together and the cover being stamped. Greta focuses on the position and aspirations of women in the society and in doing so she rolls adaptation and dissertation into one.

Part of brilliance of Gerwig’s interpretation is that she fuses together Alcott’s Jo and Alcott herself. Her narrative is experimental and fresh in the sense that it is not so much the story of Little Women itself but Alcott’s writing of the novel. Gerwig’s Jo is witty and more insistent on fulfilling her aspirations rather than fitting into the society’s conventions which condition women to believe that marriage is the only way to become financially independent. Speaking of marriage, Amy’s speech to Laurie on marriage is extremely pivotal, not only because it reveals her character but also because it drops some harsh truth bombs. Amy is quite aware of the fact that she is not good enough a painter to lead a comfortable life and support her family. She has the maturity of a woman who is aware of her standing and sternly explains how marriage is an “economic proposition” for a woman. This powerful speech is not in the book and is exemplary of Gerwig’s creativity. So, the scorned Amy is more of an unapologetic realist. Through Meg and Beth, the director and the author stress on the importance of women making their own choices, even if it is the choice of marrying a man who is not rich or the choice of domestic life. It must always be their choice and not their need.

During the 19th century when the cult of femininity was defined by strict Victorian ideals like piety, beauty, and domesticity, Alcott planted the seeds of pro feminist consciousness in the four sisters, especially Jo. Gerwig employs meaningful subversions and updates the new feminine model of Alcott with which the movie’s female audience can easily identify. When Jo (Saoirse Ronan) delivers the heart-wrenching and seminal speech in the attic while talking to her mother, her tough facade crumbles and she is left searching meaning in a society that merely considers women as objects of beauty and love, while also reckoning with the fact that she wants to find a partner. “Women have minds and souls as well as just hearts, and they’ve got ambition and talent as well as just beauty. And I’m sick of people saying that love is all a woman is fit for. I’m so sick of it! But- I’m so lonely.” The speech was picked up from the book but Gerwig very artfully added “I’m so lonely” at the end. This makes her adaptation refreshingly different from the others.

In telling the story of the birth of an artist, Gerwig pulls taut two conflicting desires and explores that tension in the light of awakening of Jo’s literary vocation: making a satisfying living from one’s art and relying on that art as a mode of personal expression. After experiencing the devastating loss of her sister at the hands of an earlier disease, Jo starts writing her biggest project, a semi-autobiographical novel inspired in part by her and her sisters’ childhood. The novel is her tribute to Beth. However, she does not marry off her heroine until her publisher asks her to do so for commercial reasons because a story cannot sell if it has a spinster heroine at the ending. Thus, “marriage has always been an economic proposition, even in fiction!” Jo boldly retains the copyright of her book and negotiates a substantial amount of money from the profits saying “If I’m going to sell my heroine into marriage for money, I might as well get some of it.”

Another important aspect of the novel that hasn’t made into most of the adaptations is Jo confiding her anger in Marmee who tells Jo “I’m angry nearly every day of my life.” Gerwig’s adaptation is the second to include this incredible line. Laura Dern’s Marmee is the one who responds quite archly to the idiocies offered by her husband. Marmee’s maternal anger is like a miracle of insight: comes out of nowhere but seeps everywhere. It is central but unknowable, cherished but easy to ignore. Marmee’s maternal anger seems a central part of the story- expressed and suppressed and her story about creativity, love, home, and world-making might be another significant feminist act on Alcott’s part apart from Jo’s artistic awakening.

Gerwig’s Little Women is not a bland retelling of a tale but something which brings a contemporary punch to the Victorian narrative without compromising on the historical charm of the novel. The battles and triumphs of the March sisters seem mundane but they are important and resonate with the modern audience. Unlike the other adaptations, which focus primarily on Jo March, Gerwig focuses on the feminist undertones of the original tale through Meg’s sacrifices of raising a family, Amy’s ambition to leave a mark, Beth’s unwavering kindness in the face of personal struggles and Jo’s demand to be heard as a writer in a profession dominated by men. The March sisters subvert the idea of female protagonist balancing her aspirations and personal life with the societal burden of being a woman. They make irrational decisions, fight, make mistakes and constantly question who they are and what they stand for. Thanks to the artistic direction which conveys a female experience that is genuine and honest.

Little Women is a testament as to why stories about women need to be told by women and Greta Gerwig makes it more apparent through her relevant retelling of the classic tale and making it the most impactful adaptation so far.

The most recent adaptation of Little Women was a masterpiece and took the world by storm. It was filled with feminist messages, heartwarming sister relationships, and romance to make you swoon. The cast had Saiorse Ronan (The Lovely Bones), Emma Watson (Harry Potter), Florence Pugh (Midsommar), Eliza Scanlen (Sharp Objects), Timothée Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name), Laura Dern (Big Little Lies,) and Meryl Streep (Mamma Mia). But what should you pick up to read or watch next? Well I have broken down the movie into sections with some recommendations for you all!

If you loved the feminism in Little Women a.k.a the scene where Jo talks to her mum about how women are more than just their looks or when Amy tells Laurie what it means to be a woman in the 1800s. I would recommend you watch the Netflix original series, Anne with an E.

Anne with an E is about Anne Shirley, an orphan girl who comes to live with an elderly brother and sister in Avonlea, Prince Edward Island. Anne has a big imagination and an even bigger heart. This show is beautifully shot, has incredible characters, and so many feminist moments. The most feminist-centred episode would have to be Season 3, Episode 7, so if you’re just going to watch one episode, watch that one. Anne is very similar to Jo and it is also set in the past (1907), so this a perfect watch if you loved Little Women. This TV show is based on the books Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery, but the TV show did something very similar to Greta Gerwig’s adaptation and has taken a more modern twist and opened a discussion about relevant issues today.

Things A Bright Girl Can Do by Sally Nicholls is also a great read if you want to read something with a feminist undertone. This book is set in the early 1900s during the suffragette movement in England. Things A Bright Girl Can Do is filled with badass women and is so insightful to a movement we often forget about.

If you loved the time period of when Little Women is set I would recommend either watching or reading Little House on the Prairie. This story takes place in Minnesota in the 1870s-90s. The costumes in the show are great (not quite as extravagant as in Little Women), it shows how people survived and how hard people had to work. This is based on the real life of Laura Ingalls-Wilder and her family settling into Walnut Grove. Laura is feisty, brave, and a little reckless. This show/book is filled with heartwarming family moments and a great insight into what it was like to live in this time period.

If you loved the romance in Little Women I would recommend watching Poldark. This show is set in Cornwall, England in the late 1700s and early 1800s. It has a strong female lead and a romance that will have you swooning, the accents are also amazing. If you’ve watched The Hobbit, Aiden Turner is the dashing love interest in this.

Family plays a very important role in Little Women and if you adored that aspect of this movie you should definitely go and check out One Day At A Time. Although this show is set in present day America, it has a great family dynamic and discusses so many important issues.

Little Women is all about the March sisters and if you loved any scene with all four sisters together you should pick up The Penderwicks by Jeanne Birdsall. This book might just be the modern Little Women and it follows four sisters on summer holiday in Massachusetts. This book is targeted at younger readers but can be read at any age.

Greta Gerwig is one talented director, if you adore this woman (who doesn’t?) you should check out her other very successful film Lady Bird. You may see some familiar faces in this film as well (Saiorse and Timothée just seem to have the best chemistry). This film is about a teen girl in her senior year of high school and how she navigates her relationship with her mum, friends and boys

In case you’ve already watched/read all of these you can always just rewatch the movie, that never hurts.

Article contributed by Maša Tome

February is already upon us and with that comes the constant stream of Valentine’s Day advertisements. But there is another day (in my humble opinion vastly more important day) in February that should be celebrated just as widely. I am of course talking about Galentine’s Day, a day to celebrate your BFFs, your gals that have your back and lift you up on a daily!

For those of you who don’t know what Galentine’s Day is, it is a holiday, created by Amy Poehler’s Parks and Recreation character Leslie Knope, that occurs every year on February 13th. So the day before Valentine’s is all about your friends!

Leslie described it perfectly in the show (this is part of episode 16 of season 2) “Ladies celebrating ladies”! Galentine’s Day is all about showering your girlfriends with love and having the best time together, whether outside cruising the restaurants and bars or inside marathoning those fluffy rom-coms and treating yourself to a relaxing spa day.

Now I’m not gonna lie, I am more of a “stay-inside-and-watch-five-movies-in-a-row” kinda gal myself and a student at that so I’m gonna share some epic Galentine’s Day ideas with you – but on a budget! Because we can still treat ourselves without spending copious amounts of money!

So without further ado, here are three steps you should follow for a fun and nerdy Galentine’s Day with your girlfriends!

1. FOOD

We are on a budget here, so this means no fancy restaurants. Instead we’ll be cooking this delicious Galentine’s Day meal ourselves – or well, preparing it with more cooking-savvy friends in my case as my skills in the kitchen are rusty (read: non-existent). And since this should be a fun and quick affair, here are some easy dishes you can whip up in basically no time AND have the best time preparing them with your BFFs!

Waffles: This is a Galentine’s Day staple in honour of Leslie Knope. Leslie is known for her love of breakfast foods so here we are, eating waffles loaded with chocolate/maple syrup/berries and spilling – I mean, drinking some tea with our friends!

Avocado Toast: There is no right or wrong way when it comes to preparing this Millennial favourite! This brunch dish only requires some toast, avocado and whatever you like best with that (I swear on mustard – don’t roll your eyes at me, just try it!)

Cute little canapés! Fancy and quick!

Home-made pizza! Now this is slightly more complex, but if you decide to do it with your friends it can also turn into a nice hour of bonding over cooking!

2. GIFT IDEAS – A.K.A BOOKS

Okay so in the spirit of not spending too much, we can go through some on a budget gift ideas! The first one is naturally books. Some might argue that books are not exactly cheap BUT it’s books, okay, Karen? We can all splurge a bit on books and treat our lovely girlfriends to some fluff! I put together a list of cute reads of different genres that are perfect for Galentine’s Day (aka have epic friendships AND OTPs to die for!)

The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee: This historical fiction novel will win over your hearts instantly with its witty characters, familial ties and TOO PRECIOUS love story! Plus you can make a drinking game out of how many times Monty says something inappropriate.

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott: A truly amazing classic about the power of sisterly love and all the adventures of the March sisters that will also inspire you to pull out a billowy white shirt and maybe even journal!

Poetry collections by Amanda Lovelace for your poetry-loving friends (or tbh all your friends cause these poems are powerful)! Lovelace published some truly amazing collections all focusing on women and their strength! My personal favourite is The Witch Doesn’t Burn in This One!

Moxie by Jennifer Mathieu: You need this book in your arsenal due to its feminist manifesto, great female friendships and basically a girl revolution! (And we’re getting an adaptation directed by none other than Amy Poehler! No time like the present to read this gem!)

Mixing this list up a bit and ending it with some lightning quick YA fantasy/sci-fi recs with super important female friendships: Six of Crows, Vampire Academy, The Lunar Chronicles, and The Gilded Wolves! Get lost in these epic adventure books that will make you want to join a ragtag team in a blink!

But in case books are not your go-to gifts, you can never really go wrong with some chocolates, a face mask or simply a cute card with a heartfelt message!

3. MOVIE MARATHONS OR “NETFLIX AND FANGIRL-OVER-NOAH-CENTINEO”

You had to know that this would make the list. First of all, Netflix basically owns us all at this point and if we go for Netflix OGs, To All the Boys I’ve Loved before is a perfect way to start your movie marathon! Swoon-worthy love stories, the power of sisterly love and some much needed drama! And since the second movie, To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You is out just before Galentine’s Day, you can do a double feature! All the Noah Centineo, Lana Condor and Jordan Fisher you could ask for! The only downside of this epic movie marathon could be a possible rift between your friends – team Peter or team John Ambrose?!

Here are some other movie suggestions for a great day:

Mean Girls: I don’t really have to explain this one, do I?

Little Women: You can gift the book AND then have a movie marathon with this beauty! Plus you have a few adaptations to pick from – my personal favourite would have to be the latest one!

Pitch Perfect: We have amazing friendships AND musical numbers! It’s a win-win situation plus you can make it into a real marathon and watch all three movies!

The Princess Diaries: Another classic that takes you back in time! Many of us probably went through that “Maybe I’m a princess of a small and obscure country too” phase.

Ocean’s Eight: I am sorry, but this movie is perfection filled with badassery, heists and all the Slytherin vibes!

And if you are into more extreme binging like myself (a season or nothing!), pick one TV show and binge! Some of the recent binge-worthy ones that are most fun to watch with friends are:

The Bold Type: Okay so this is the obvious choice for a tv show to watch with your BFFs. A story of three badass gals living in NYC and slaying in the media world? Hells yes!

You: Look, it’s creepy so you need a group of friends to watch it with. And to wonder aloud how no one sees Joe when he has his hat on. Is it an invisibility hat?!

Spinning Out: The *drama*, you guys! Plus the mental health representation is on point which is always a good addition!

Friends: This is honestly a very obvious choice. And really, is it ever a bad day to rewatch Friends? (The answer is: No.)

Parks and Recreation: Get inspired by the hard-working and kickass lead ladies of this truly iconic sitcom!

And here we have all three steps you should follow for a fun Galentine’s Day that will save you a few bucks but still guarantee an amazing day with your BFFs!

And in the true Parks and Recreation I leave you with this wise words from Donna and Tom: “Treat yo self!”

Article contributed by Zoë Leonarczyk

With the Oscars nearly upon us, it is a time to reflect on all of the amazing movies of the year. The range of movies this past year has truly been astonishing. Films such as Joker, which in years past would just be an action film, went deeper into the mind. 1917 incorporated astonishing cinematography to bring the warfront to life. Even Netflix’s Marriage Story received tumultuous praise. And amidst all of these films came a story about family, Little Women.

Little Women amassed a whopping six Academy Award Nominations. Amy Pascal received a nomination for best picture, Saoirse Ronan for best actress, Florence Pugh for best supporting actress, Alexandre Desplat for best original music score, Greta Gerwig for best adapted screenplay, and Jacqueline Durran for best costume design. Yet as all of these nominations rolled in, there is one glaring nomination missing: best director. While six nominations are a feat in and of itself, the woman who brought all of this together was snubbed from a directorial award.

While six nominations is an amazing amount, the snub towards Gerwig was still felt and noticed. Many may argue that there is nothing to complain about, but this snub only fuels the Oscars history of shutting out female directors. So, instead of asking “why are people mad,” perhaps instead ask:

“Why are we still having this conversation?”

Female directors have notoriously been snubbed for as long as the Oscars have run. Out of the 92 years of the Oscars, only five women have been nominated for best director. That’s right, five women. Of those five only one woman has won an Academy Award for best director. Kathryn Bigelow made history in 2010 winning the Academy Award for best director for The Hurt Locker. In the years since that monumental win, only one more woman has been nominated: Greta Gerwig.

In 2018, Gerwig was nominated as best director for her film, Lady Bird. In her solo-directorial debut, Gerwig presented Lady Bird, a coming-of-age story that shows the ups and downs of our personal relationships. But even with this film’s popularity, Gerwig still lost to Guillermo del Toro for The Shape of Water.

Fast forward to 2019 and Gerwig brought to life the fan favourite Little Women. Amongst the handful of Little Women film adaptations, Gerwig’s Little Women stands apart. Gerwig took the beloved March sisters and made them more. Jo is an independent woman determined to make it on her own. Meg chose love and a family. Beth helped spread joy to those who may not otherwise feel it. And Amy became a woman that many can relate to.

It is a film that celebrates women and the multifaceted nature of individuality. It highlights the relationships and people that help one grow. It shows that any woman can achieve what she sets her mind to. It is truly a movie of today. Even through the post-Civil War setting the March sisters are a force to be reckoned with, something that any woman can relate to. And that is the genius behind Gerwig’s Little Women. All of the characters are relatable in some aspect, including Amy, the March sister that often gets all the hate because her character is rarely fleshed out enough to serve any purpose other than as a plot thickener.

Yet, even with all of this Gerwig was not recognised for all that she accomplished with this film. Gerwig is a woman who successfully created a film that amassed a total of six nominations, but even that was not enough to earn a place amongst the men nominated for best director.

With all that being said, I want to end on a high note and give recognition to all of the amazing women who have been nominated for an Academy Award for best director:

Lina Wertmüller for Seven Beauties

Jane Campion for The Piano

Sofia Coppola for Lost in Translation

Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker

Greta Gerwig for Lady Bird

It is not a long list, but it opens a conversation.

There is a conversation between Amy and Jo that comes about halfway through ‘Little Women’ in which the two discuss whether the latter’s work will become anything more than a means to make money.

Jo states, “Writing doesn’t confer importance. It reflects it.”

Yet Amy insists, “Writing things is what makes them important.”

It is hard to not see the relevance of this to Louisa May Alcott’s novels in the 19th century. When the first part of ‘Little Women’ was published in 1868, the United States were fresh off the back of the Civil War, and the illusions of the South as an antebellum paradise were breaking down. Replacing the Southern Belle archetype was the “New Woman” who was independent and self-reliant, and yet resistance to these feminist waves still dominated the discourse around the changes taking place.

‘Little Women’ famously challenged these norms, reflecting Alcott’s own experiences as a feminist, abolitionist, and unmarried writer right up until her death in 1888. In Greta Gerwig’s Oscar-nominated 2019 adaptation of the novel, the parallels are drawn even closer – Alcott’s famous words “I’d rather be a free spinster and paddle my own canoe” are given to Jo March, as she navigates her own way through a culture that imprints its own gendered expectations of women into the minds of girls from an early age. She rails against the limitations forced upon her as she strives to carve her own way in the world, gradually building an impressive literary career that never manages to fully escape the overbearing influence of the literary industry’s patriarchal shadow.

In the final moments of Gerwig’s ‘Little Women’, Jo’s attempts to get her autobiographical novel published are successful, but only on the condition that its protagonist is married by the end. The following sequence cuts between Jo’s professional success, and her chasing down her love interest in a euphoric moment of passion, apparently cementing their future as a happily married couple. Up until now, the film’s non-linearity has been kept from becoming too abstruse by visually distinguishing the present from the past with a cold, stark tone, and yet when it comes to Jo’s rainy kiss we find the screen bathed in a warm glow.

For the first time in the film, Gerwig is allowing some ambiguity into how we interpret the reality of its events. This could be Jo finally finding happiness in a romantic relationship, just as her novel counterpart did, or it could possibly be Jo’s written version of herself being changed to appease her editor’s expectations. This version of Jo is even closer to Alcott’s vision of herself, as a woman who found great joy in her own independence, and yet it doesn’t go so far as to entirely contradict the novel’s established account. The magic of the ending is that Gerwig allows the two to exist side-by-side – a version of Jo in which she happily never marries, and a version of Jo that happily marries and still never gives up her personal convictions.

Though Saoirse Ronan and Florence Pugh have both been appropriately recognised with a pair of acting nominations at the 2020 Oscars, the greatest snub of the entire year has been the lack of recognition for Gerwig’s phenomenal direction. After her 2017 coming-of-age film ‘Lady Bird’ landed five nominations without a single win, it seemed that this might have been her year to finally be recognised by the Academy as one of the decade’s greatest directors, even with only two feature films under her belt. The fact she has been able to take this classic story, which has been adapted countless times, and retell it in a way that both maintains the integrity of the original piece and allows room for her own inspired, contemporary take, all without a shred of directorial recognition from her industry peers seems mind-boggling.

There is comfort in the larger picture though, especially in how the story of four women growing up in the post-Civil War era has taken hold in our culture, to the point that it has been adapted into a film nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. Individual struggles against a dominant force feel unimportant in the moment, but just as Amy asserts, it is stories like ‘Little Women’ that let them live on in our collective consciousness.

Written by Kiara Co

Based on the 1868 classic novel by Louisa May Alcott, Greta Gerwig’s version of Little Women has been done differently compared to the other on screen adaptations. The new adaptation features a stellar cast with the likes of Saoirse Ronan as Jo, Emma Watson as Meg, Florence Pugh as Amy, Eliza Scanlen as Beth, Timothée Chalamet as Laurie, Laura Dern as Marmee, and Meryl Streep as Aunt March.

Little Women is one of the most well-known classic novels of American literature and it has been known for generations and generations. There has been multiple movies made, especially the most well-known version which is the 1994 film by Gillian Armstrong, so this review will be focused on the movie itself rather than heavily comparing this version with the book and this version versus other adaptations.

Most people seemed to be annoyed by the fact that there’s another Little Women movie, but what Greta Gerwig has done hasn’t been done before with its non-linear storytelling. As figured, it’s going to be as big as the 1994 version, particularly for the awards season, and in fact, the producers from the 1994 film are the producers of this version. Gillian Armstrong, who was the writer and director of the 1994’s Little Women, also came on board as the producer for this version too. Gerwig’s Little Women is an unforgettable version and one of the best films of 2019.

Greta Gerwig’s visual style still continues to be amazing after her well-received directorial debut film, Ladybird. From a director perspective, it has improved so much compared to Ladybird. As for the script she wrote, it felt relevant, heartbreaking, and funny. She wrote a script that was faithful to the novel, but also making it fresh at the same time, and the screenplay of this film was one of the best parts of this movie.

The score of this film was quite overwhelming, but suited the tone of the lives of the four March sisters, and it was beautifully composed by Alexandre Desplat, who is one of the best music film composers out there. As for the cinematography, it felt so luscious and every shot was done so beautifully. The use of colours to differentiate the timeline was well appreciated as most of the time for period dramas, the cinematography can look so bland. There are plenty of period dramas that all just look the same due to the cinematography, so Little Women as a period drama stands out as the vibrant colours make it looks so modern. The costuming also stands out significantly with each of the March sisters having their own signature colour, whereas Marmee (played by Laura Dern) included all of the signature colours of the sisters in her outfits. Throughout the film, both Jo (played by Saoirse Ronan) and Laurie (played by Timothée Chalamet) even switch pieces of clothing to symbolise that they are like twins and the bond between them. Lastly is the production design, which was filmed in Boston, where the story actually takes place in and the props and sets really helped to make you feel as though you are a part of their story.

However, the one minor issue of this film is the editing using the nonlinear structure. It starts off introducing the March sisters in the present with Jo in New York teaching young students and writing short stories (but by claiming it is her friend’s story) to earn money. Amy is in Paris with her painting lessons and waiting to get proposed by a wealthy suitor. Meg who wants a pretty silk yet cannot afford because she is now a wife and mother. And lastly, there is Beth who remains in their childhood home playing the piano. Once Jo receives a letter about how Beth is sick again, Jo returns back home and then flashbacks from their childhood start to play. The flashbacks flowed well putting them into the right place and it really showed each of the character’s development despite that nonlinear structure. Although the differentiation between past and present may be difficult for some who are not familiar with the story, you have to rely on the use of colour and their hairstyles, but you will get used to it after a third into the movie.

Of course, this is not surprising at all, but once again Saoirse Ronan delivers an excellent performance as the lead playing Jo March. Other standouts were Florence Pugh (Amy) and Timothée Chalamet (Laurie) who shined in this film as well, but really, every single actor did each of the character’s justice! Not only that, but each of their portrayal of the character were all very likeable. This version captured what a family is like even in today’s era and it captured what are sisters like too! Within this movie, it’s understandable why each character did what they had to do and why they felt that way in the past which affects their actions in the present.

Last but not least, the ending of this film as it wasn’t the same as the adaptations or the book. It was an ending that was dedicated to Louisa May Alcott and the character of Jo had some parts of Louisa in it. The ending shows Mr. Dashwood (played by Tracy Letts) and Jo making a deal for Jo’s novel. “If I am going to make my character end in marriage, I might as well get the full copyright of my book.” This was true to life with the making of Little Women when Alcott felt pressured to make her character married at the end. Alcott was unmarried in real life and she based Little Women based on her life. The ending shows Jo witnessing her novel being put together and the last shot is Jo hugging her novel making for such a strong ending. Not only does it makes it a unique version and an ode to Alcott but it is an ending we all need to see. The ending where it is a love story between a girl and her book rather than a love story between a girl and a boy. It captures Jo’s journey with hard work, talent, and ambition.

Gerwig shows how this story will always be relevant and she proved it in this film. The story of Little Women will always be relevant throughout many generations. The novel by Louisa May Alcott was ahead of its time, especially when it was published in 1868. If you enjoyed the classic novel that gives this heartwarming and cosy feeling or wanting to just watch a movie in cinemas this holiday, then Little Women is for you!
