Everyone loves a good Netflix binge, but sometimes it’s nice to put down the popcorn and snuggle up with a good book. Actually, you can keep the popcorn, because it pairs just as well with these amazing reads as it does with your flatscreen.

Everyone is talking about Cinderella these days, thanks to Amazon Studios’s new adaption of this classic fairytale, starring Camila Cabelo in the title role. Whether Camila is your new fave fairytale princess or you still live for Lily James and her pretty glass butterfly shoes, you will enjoy THE SHOE FITS by Julie Murphy. Murphy, author of Dumplin’ (also a fab Netflix movie), brings us a modern, body-positive Cinderella who competes on a Bachelor-style reality show. This book is the first in a new series of adult Disney Princess romcoms from Disney Hyperion, so there’s even more fairy tale magic to come.

If you like Never Have I Ever, you should read DIAL A FOR AUNTIES by Jesse Q. Sutanto
Who isn’t completely charmed by the creative brain of Mindy Kaling? Based somewhat on Kaling’s own upbringing, this coming-of-age story of an Indian-American teenager dealing with the death of her father will make you laugh one minute and get all teary-eyed the next. One of the best things about the show is its emphasis on family. If you love this Netflix treat, DIAL A FOR AUNTIES by Jesse Q. Sutanto is the read for you. When the main character accidentally kills her blind date (oops!), her mom and an entire squad of meddlesome-but-well-meaning aunties comes to her rescue. Things only get more complicated (and more hilarious) from there.

If you like You’ve Got Mail, you should read TO SIR, WITH LOVE by Lauren Layne

You’ve Got Mail is an oldie but a goody, and since its release in 1988, this Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks treasure has inspired loads of romcom novels. One of the very best is this summer’s TO SIR WITH LOVE by Lauren Layne. It’s like You’ve Got Mail with a heaping dose of champagne. Yes, please.

If you like Ted Lasso, you should read THE BROMANCE BOOK CLUB by Lyssa Kay Adams

Ted Lasso has made kindness cool again, just when we needed it most. If you want to feel those same warm fuzzies, complete with sports team vibes (baseball instead of soccer, but still…) and men supporting one another in a healthy way while uplifting the romance literary genre at the same time, head to your nearest online bookstore and one-click THE BROMANCE BOOK CLUB by Lyssa Kay Adams immediately.

If you like Grace and Frankie, you should read MOM JEANS AND OTHER MISTAKES, by Alexa Martin

Alexa Martin’s MOM JEANS AND OTHER MISTAKES is a great read for anyone drawn to the strong female friendship storyline in Grace and Frankie. The main characters are a bit younger, but just like in the Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin Netflix favorite, they become unexpected roommates and the supporting cast of family members provide lots of drama and laughs.

If you like The Great British Baking Show, you should read BATTLE ROYAL by Lucy Parker

Soggy bottom, anyone? If you’ve ever dreamed of whipping up a batch of cupcakes worthy of that ever-elusive Paul Hollywood handshake, BATTLE ROYAL by Lucy Parker is definitely your jam. It’s like a royal wedding meets THE GREAT BRITISH BAKING SHOW, and fair warning: you will definitely want to have some cake on hand while reading it. Trust me on this.

If you like Fleabag, you should read HOT UNDER THE COLLAR by Andie J. Christopher

Let’s be real. When I say Fleabag, I’m specifically talking about season two and the Hot Priest (which absolutely deserves to be capitalized). If you’re still longing for those episodes or even just rocking your fabulous black Fleabag jumpsuit, HOT UNDER THE COLLAR by Andie J. Christopher will fill that aching void in your heart.

If you like Emily in Paris, you should read THE PARIS CONNECTION by Lorraine Brown

Emily in Paris has left hordes of us crying into our croissants and wondering why we never moved to France and accidentally fell in love with charming chef downstairs. If you enjoyed Netflix’s romp through the City of Lights starring Lily Collins and her amazing wardrobe, you will adore THE PARIS CONNECTION by Lorraine Brown. This delightful new book has the same magical armchair tourist quality and plenty of will-they-ever-get-together angst. Fantastique!

If you like Cruella, you should read A SPOT OF TROUBLE by Teri Wilson

If Cruella has you seeing spots (the good, furry Dalmatian kind), I’ve got you covered. A SPOT OF TROUBLE was written by yours truly, and it’s a whimsical romantic comedy for anyone who loves Emma Stone in Cruella or Disney’s other 101 Dalmatians movies. Bonus: no one wants to make a coat out of the sweet dogs. I promise.

It’s Paris Fashion Week and the cafes are crowed and Pierre won’t let Savoir into the atelier. Mindy (Ashley Park) tells Emily (Lily Collins) that the drag club offered her a job of emceeing. when Emily receives a message from Mathieu Cadault (Charles Martins) to meet and he takes her on a boat ride along the Seine. He tells her that he still hasn’t seen Pierre’s new collection and then takes her to his apartment to a stunning view and they kiss. However, they’re interrupted by Pierre calling as he wants to cancel his show.

The next day, Emily arrives at Savoir and Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu) seems excited to invite Emily’s influencers to the show when they’re interrupted by Antoine (William Abadie). Luc (Bruno Gouery) is his new account manager and they all sit down for a meeting about the Zimmer Hotel, but they’re all distracted. Julien (Samuel Arnold) interrupts them about Pierre cancelling the venue when Mathieu calls saying Pierre exclaimed ‘ringarde’ at every piece. Sylvie is not impressed with Emily’s relationship with Mathieu and everything that has happened, so she fires Emily, but Julien and Luc inform Emily that apparently it takes months to actually fire someone in France. Emily returns home to find Camille (Camille Razat) and Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) arguing outside of the apartment building as it turns out Gabriel wants to buy a restaurant in Normandy that he can afford.

The following morning, she’s watching Gabriel pack up his things since he’s moving next week. Emily runs into Sylvie at Savoir, but she says she still has to attend to her clients’ needs. Luc steps in saying he doesn’t think working with Antoine suits, and suggests Emily for the time being and she agrees to it.

Emily receives an invitation as Grey Space have taken over Pierre’s cancelled venue, and Pierre received one too and wants to see Emily right away. Sylvie goes with Emily to see Pierre (Jean-Christophe Bouvet) and he shows them a dress that Emily loves, but Sylvie hates. He wants to show the dress immediately, so Emily says she’ll find a venue.

That night, Mindy pays a visit to Emily with all of her belongings as she was fired. She then receives a visit from Gabriel as he has a gift for her: the pan he used to cook her an omelet. He then asks if she will have dinner with him tomorrow, as it will be his last night and that him and Camille broke up.

The next day, Grey Space has a massive turn out at their event when Pierre arrives and Emily, Sylvie, and Mathieu watch on as a decked out garbage truck drives in. A group of models wearing neon dresses walk out with various phrases on them such as ‘I am tacky’, ‘Pierre who?’, and ‘basic trash’, and the collection is a hit with the crowd.

That night, the Savoir team, along with Mathieu and Pierre, have dinner at Gabriel’s restaurant. Antoine and Catherine also arrive, and she says to Emily that she thinks Emily will be a much better fit for Antoine. Towards the end of the night, Mathieu asks if she wants to go to Saint-Tropez for the weekend, and she says yes.

Antoine approaches Gabriel to learn of why he is leaving, and it’s clear with Emily now sitting with Mathieu and enjoying his company. Gabriel says goodbye to Emily, which is made awkward with Mathieu watching on with the tension between them.

Later on,  Emily sees Gabriel from her balcony and goes after him, so he kisses her and the pair go back to his apartment. In bed afterwards, Emily says she doesn’t think she should see Gabriel again as she doesn’t want to hurt Camille.

The next morning, Emily reads articles about Pierre when Sylvie approaches to tell her she’s not filing the termination paperwork as Emily has potential. She receives a message from Mathieu about their plans when she finds herself stopping out the front of Gabriel’s restaurant and sees Antoine. Gabriel then exits the restaurant with champagne and it appears Antoine wants to invest in him, so Gabriel is staying in Paris. Just as Gabriel goes to get another glass, Emily receives a message from Camille about the news and if they can talk.

Overall Thoughts?

I have to admit, I genuinely feel invested in Emily’s story now, but also frustrated that it took 7-8 episodes to get there. This episode did feel very Younger-esque with it reminiscent of who will Liza choose, but then again, a lot of dramas are like that, except that also ties in with Emily saving the main event, being accepted at Savoir, and being in a complicated area with Camille after sleeping with Gabriel.

I’m intrigued as to why Antoine decided to invest in Gabriel staying, and perhaps he’s playing the long game to be with Emily or maybe he’s not as bad as he seems and wanted to help them be together. Obviously Gabriel seems as though he’s the better fit for Emily over Mathieu, but things could get complicated with Camille.

Regardless, if they do make a second season, I’m hoping they keep it at the same level of drama and interest of these final three episodes, but also give a chance to let other characters such as Julien and Luc to have their own storylines so they can be more fleshed out rather than providing two sentences of dialogue or humour to an episode or scene.

The episode opens with a group of Americans celebrating the Cubs winning and spraying a bottle of Champère in a video, as Emily is pitching it to Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu) and Luc (Bruno Gouery). Emily invites them to meet Camille at her art opening at the gallery and it seems Sylvie is avoiding Antoine’s calls.

Later that day, Emily meets with Judith from the American Friends of the Louvre as she is wondering if Pierre Cadault would donate a dress for it to be auctioned. After their meeting, Emily calls Mathieu Cadault (Charles Martins) to ask if she can meet with them, but he suggests a drink and ends up saying he’ll come to the gallery opening.

At the art gallery, Sylvie, Luc, Camille (Camille Razat), and Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) meet when Mathieu also arrives. They view some artworks and Luc finds one to be very sexual. Camille is very intrigued with Mathieu and Emily, and Camille suggests a bistro nearby for a dinner. She brings up the donated dress and he invites her to the atelier the next day.

Back at work the following day, Emily looks at articles of Mathieu with various girlfriends when Sylvie interrupts to comment on Emily’s time with Mathieu.

Emily arrives at the Louvre event and Sylvie is also there, as well as the creators of an American avant-garde fashion label, Grey Space. Naturally Emily pitches Savoir to them, but they’re happy keeping their marketing in-house. Unfortunately, the woman who was meant to wear the Pierre Cadault dress hasn’t arrived and Mathieu suggests Emily to be the model. The bidding starts and the dress sells for 38,000 euros to Grey Space. Next thing we know, the pair are blasting paint on to Emily and the dress for a publicity stunt.

The next morning, Emily has multiple missed calls and texts when Gabriel comes to check on her as she’s in the newspaper. Sylvie’s not exactly impressed with the events of the previous night, so Emily goes to see Grey Space and says that Pierre (Jean-Christophe Bouvet) thinks it was an insult.

Emily finds Pierre cracking into some crème brûlées on his bed as the sound is very satisfying. She then shows him a Grey Space sweatshirt with Pierre’s logo on it as a potential collaboration piece to bring him into the world of streetwear, but he’s not a fan of ‘the revenge of la ringarde’. After she leaves, Mathieu asks her how it went and he holds her hand and then kisses her.

Emily (Lily Collins) goes to leave for the day and tries avoiding Camille (Camille Razat) and Gabriel (Lucas Bravo), but she receives a text from Camille asking her to lunch. Over breakfast with Mindy (Ashley Park), Emily is worried Camille knows about the kisses, while Mindy will be going wedding dress shopping and clubbing with her friends.

At lunch, it turns out Camille wants to ask Emily if Savoir would be interested in taking on her family’s champagne house as a client. Emily is then invited to meet Camille’s family on the weekend, but when she pitches it to Savoir, she’s bombarded with questions she can’t answer.

The following day, Emily is ready to leave with Camille, but it turns out Gabriel is coming with them now and she has to sit on his lap in the car. While Camille speaks with her mother, Emily finds the pool and a naked man sunbathing introduces himself as Gérard (Christophe Guybet), Camille’s father. Gabriel and Emily are sent out to the markets by Louise (Alix Bénézech), Camille’s mother, but Emily doesn’t want to go with him and decides to go on the vineyard tour instead. While on the tour, the guide is definitely catching the eye of Emily and vice versa, and he turns out to be Camille’s brother, Timothée (Victor Meutelet).

At dinner with Camille’s family, Gabriel makes coq au vin and there are a few cheeky innuendos regarding eggplants and Gabriel’s coq. Soon, Louise brings up Gabriel not accepting their help, so Gabriel leaves for the kitchen. Timothée snaps a picture of Camille and Emily for Instagram, and she now has over 21K followers.

At Shay’s bachelorette night, they’re at a drag club and they want Mindy to perform, as well as admitting they know everything about her life in Paris. Her friends livestream her singing and Emily watches her perform Sia’s ‘Chandelier’, the song she butchered during the singing contest, but she performs it well this time.

Emily escapes the house when she hears Camille and Louise fighting, and Timothée joins her by the pool. The pair talk about Emily running away from her life, and drink champagne from a coupe glass. Next thing we know, Timothée’s telling her that the glasses were modelled after Marie Antoinette’s breasts and he has his hands on hers and the pair have sex.

The next morning at breakfast, Emily hides a hickey on her neck and she’s introduced to Camille’s brother…. It turns out Timothée is Camille’s younger brother and only 17! Timothée joins them and kisses her on the lips, much to the surprise of Camille’s family and Louise asks to speak with Emily.

They speak and Louise asks if her son is a good lover as she worries for her childrens future. She goes to call Emily a car so she can leave after being embarrassed, but Emily wants to talk business. Emily pitches a bottle spray and a bottle to sip, but Louise worries about their legacy, so Emily suggests a second label, Champère, and she’s intrigued.

Emily (Lily Collins) is walking to work and spies Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu) shopping, so the pair end up walking together and it appears Sylvie will be off next week. Emily offers to help with the Fourtier party, but naturally Sylvie isn’t a fan until she says Emily can babysit Brooklyn Clark, the American actress.

Julien (Samuel Arnold) gives Brooklyn’s itinerary to Emily when Julien and Luc (Bruno Gouery) say Brooklyn’s romantic comedy movies are seen as dishonest in France. Apparently they prefer more of a French ending, such as they die, lose a limb, or someone is actually a lesbian. Later on, Emily arrives at the hotel and meets Brooklyn (Carlson Young) and says she’ll use her connections with Pierre Cadault to get her something to wear for the launch.

That night, Emily has dinner with Mindy (Ashley Park) and Camille (Camille Razat) at Gabriel’s restaurant and she invites them all to the party. However, Mindy and Camille are busy, but Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) is free and it seems Gabriel’s boss has agreed to sell Gabriel the restaurant. Unfortunately the payment is too much for Gabriel and he appears to be uncomfortable about borrowing the money from Camille’s parents.

The next day, Brooklyn views and tries the outfits on at Pierre Cadault’s when Mathieu Cadault (Charles Martins) thinks Emily is Brooklyn and she introduces herself correctly. However, Mathieu informs her that he is the head of business affairs and so the deal with his uncle might not stand. He decides to give Savoir a one-month trial and that’s it.

At the event, Emily signs an insurance waiver for the two million euro watch when she sees that Antoine Lambert (William Abadie) and his wife Catherine are there. Gabriel also arrives and when Antoine approaches, Emily asks for Gabriel to put his arm around her. Sylvie and Catherine join them and the latter mentions perhaps they should have dinner at Gabriel’s restaurant. She thinks Antoine has  they get back as she thinks they are going away to St. Barts after Antoine’s assistant copied her in on an email, but the trip is actually with Sylvie. Emily goes after Sylvie to check if she’s okay, but she leaves.

Emily and Gabriel see Brooklyn driving off with the watch and they find her at a club. They share a drink, Brooklyn takes some Molly, and Emily and Gabriel end up kissing again. When she checks her phone, she sees multiple missed calls from Fourtier and they need the watch back straight away, but they can’t find her.

Gabriel and Emily hop on a Vespa and return to Brooklyn’s hotel, so they wait at the bar for her. Sylvie arrives and gains access to Brooklyn’s suite, which is trashed, but they find the watch. As they exit the hotel, Gabriel is there to take Emily home, but she tells him that she wants it all and they shouldn’t see each other anymore.

The next day, Emily’s photo she snapped of Pierre Cadault’s dress on Brooklyn’s floor has received over 200K likes and Mathieu thinks she can make the brand sexy again.

Emily (Lily Collins) awakens to the sounds of Camille and Gabriel having sex and at breakfast, she tells Mindy (Ashley Park) that they were at it all night. Meanwhile, Emily learns that Mindy’s dad will buy her a house and a car if she works for him. However, she doesn’t want to work for him or marry who they choose.

At Savoir, Julien (Samuel Arnold) had told Emily to wear all black clothing, but he’s wearing a sharp suit and he wanted her to blend in at Pierre Cadault’s couture house. Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu), Emily, and Julien are shown around Pierre Cadault’s and see the costumes he has designed for new ballet at the Paris Opera when he arrives and inspects the three of them. When he reaches Emily, who stumbles over her words and babbles, he exclaims ‘ringarde’, which means basic.

Later on at a cafe, a man asks Emily a question about two other customers and bets that the loser buys the next bottle of wine. She learns he is a professor of semiotics and his name is Thomas (Julien Floreancig). The pair continue talking and end up at Emily’s apartment. The next morning, she wakes to find Thomas rifling through her books and as he leaves, he asks if he can see her again and she says yes.

She then arrives at work and tells Julien that she’s not basic and of her tryst with Thomas, however, he disagrees. He notes her lateness, but it seems Sylvie lied to her and now she’s late for the Fourtier account meeting. At the park, Mindy is impressed with Emily’s night of fun, while Mindy tells her that she’s been looking up places to sing. Emily convinces her to sing a song for her and a crowd gathers to listen.

That night, Thomas meets Emily at her building and gives her a book when Camille (Camille Razat) and Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) also exit and Camille invites them to join them at dinner. As their night goes on, Thomas belittles everything Camille and Gabriel say, which becomes increasingly awkward. Thomas and Emily return for another round at her apartment, and Gabriel is left listening to them from below.

The following day, Emily suggests to Sylvie they take another shot at Pierre by attending the opening night of the ballet, but Sylvie rips up her tickets. Instead, Emily invites Thomas to the ballet.

As she leaves for the ballet, she runs into Gabriel who says he thinks Thomas is a snob, an asshole masquerading as an intellectual, and wasting her time on someone who doesn’t deserve her. She arrives at the Paris Opera in a stunning black dress and looking incredibly Audrey Hepburn. Thomas greets her and thinks seeing Swan Lake is for ‘tourists’, and he winds up calling her simple-minded, so she gives him the finger. She finds Pierre and confesses she is a basic bitch and had that Eiffel Tower keychain because she loved Gossip Girl and that without girls like her, Pierre wouldn’t be considered fashionable. He then responds with how he couldn’t believe it was Dan at the end and she leaves.

The next morning at Savoir, Sylvie informs Emily that Pierre wants to meet and that ‘Gossip Girl’ be there.

Overall Thoughts?

It definitely seemed as though this episode felt more whole, which definitely made it more interesting and I personally found myself finally feeling invested in Emily’s life. Although, it seemed strange that she now had her account back, but she didn’t post anything this episode, such as a quick snap of the Paris Opera or even a cheeky shot featuring Thomas. Regardless, I’m hoping the next four episodes have the same feel!

Emily (Lily Collins) meets with Mindy (Ashley Park) to tell her about Gabriel and Camille when Camille (Camille Razat) joins them at the cafe. Mindy snaps a picture of them, and Emily now has over 20K followers. Afterwards, Emily receives an exclusive invitation to an influencer lunch for Durée’s Cosmetics, but when Emily tells Julien (Samuel Arnold), he says Durée is a touchy subject as they used to be a client. Emily goes to Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu) to try and get more information about Durée, but she gets kicked out, along with an assignment for a luxury bed company.

Arriving at her lunch, Emily wants to speak with Olivia Thompson, the CMO of Durée, but she’ll have to work to get her attention by posting on social media. Next thing we know, Olivia loves Emily’s post and speaks with Emily about her Vaga-Jeune. Emily begins speaking of Durée’s marketing and she’s invited to a lunch the following day.

Upon arriving home, she runs into Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) and Camille, and the latter invites her to join them. The three end up at Atelier des Lumières to admire Van Gogh’s work when Camille goes off to speak with her friends, which leaves Emily and Gabriel to speak of the kiss that now never happened.

The next day at Savoir, Emily is part of the meeting with Hästens and the representative isn’t a fan of Sylvie’s idea, so Emily pitches hers. She suggests they place their beds in gorgeous places such as the Louvre and ask people to post their photos, instead of using models. Later that day, Emily has her lunch with Olivia, who asks if she’ll be Durée’s brand ambassador, but Emily tells her that she already works at Savoir. Olivia isn’t interested as Sylvie still works there, even after Emily continues to pitch to her.

Returning to Savoir, Sylvie informs Emily that Hästens wants to go ahead with Emily’s idea, but Sylvie isn’t thrilled with her attendance at the Durée lunch and asks Emily to delete her account.

This leads Emily to meet with Mindy and they decide to end her account with a bang by visiting various places in Paris, including the Moulin Rouge and the Eiffel Tower. After deleting her account, Emily drunkenly returns home and runs into Gabriel, and he says he felt something between them too.

The next day, Sylvie asks Emily to show her the last picture she posted, so she reactivates the account and shows her the photo at Place Dalida. It seems that Hästens wants to place the bed there and to have Emily be the first one to post.

With the installation all set up at Place Dalida, Camille visits Emily at the Hästens bed and she says Camille inspired her. The pair snap a picture with #getinbedwithus and Gabriel immediately likes it.

Overall Thoughts?

This episode had a better flow and an overall better feel as I noted there to be a bit more music, which helped the scenes to be more cohesive. It still feels somewhat off, but the characters are obviously becoming more developed and thus more interesting, especially with Camille and Emily growing close, along with Gabriel admitting his feelings for Emily. Could it be leading to a possible threesome between them? We shall see…

The woman introduces herself as Camille (Camille Razat) and the pair pick up a coffee and Camille invites her to a showing at the art gallery that she works for and that Randy Zimmer, hotel owner and fellow American, will be there. The pair go to say goodbye and Emily accidentally lands a kiss on Camille’s lips. Emily snaps a picture of herself with her roses and she now has over 10K followers.

Emily returns to her apartment to find several heavy boxes have arrived and Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) turns up at the right time to give her a hand. With her peanut butter containers ruined (no duh, where was the bubble wrap), Gabriel whips up an omelette for her to enjoy instead. Since Gabriel spied the lingerie, Emily informs him of the messy situation.

At Savoir, Emily overhears Antoine Lambert (William Abadie) and Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu) fighting and Emily wants to help otherwise if Maison Lavaux walks, it’ll be her fault. She interrupts and says that Maison Lavaux while create a signature fragrance for Randy Zimmer’s hotel group and credits the idea to Sylvie.

Afterwards, Sylvie throws Emily’s roses back on to her desk and she doesn’t want to be rescued. Julien (Samuel Arnold) and Luc (Bruno Gouery) rush over to take Emily to lunch and want to know what her deal is with Antoine, but also to warn her to stay out of it.

Mindy (Ashley Park) and Emily arrive at the gallery and Camille introduces her to Randy (Eioin Bailey). She begins reciting quotes from his interviews and telling him there’s no smell to his hotels, and he’s intrigued.

The next day, Randy arrives at Savoir and they begin talking scents, however, Randy isn’t so sure about making such a big decision. Emily suggests dinner and she’s lumped into organising a booking at a Michelin star restaurant when Antoine asks if his gift pleased her. However, Antoine says it was for her so she could feel sexy and powerful.

Emily messes up the reservation for Le Grand Véfour as she books for November 8th instead of August 11th. She decides to call Gabriel and asks if he can squeeze their dinner in. Over the course of dinner, there’s plenty of innuendos about sex, affairs, and more, but in the end, Randy agrees to work with Antoine and Sylvie commends Emily on doing a good job.

Emily decides to head back into the restaurant and kisses Gabriel. When she exits, she finds Sylvie pinned against a tree kissing Antoine, but she also runs into Camille. It’s then that she learns that Camille is Gabriel’s girlfriend.

Overall Thoughts?

That ending certainly has me intrigued as things have become a little more ramped up for Emily, but the overall feel of the series still misses the mark. I’m not sure if it’s the music, and sometimes lack thereof, or possibly some of the dialogue, but I think this series is just going to remain somewhat clunky and never find its footing.

Out for a run once more along the Seine, Emily (Lily Collins) receives a check in call from Madeline (Kate Walsh), which is cut short when a man begins peeing in the urinal that’s next to Emily. On her way home, she spies some women in workout clothes smoking outside of a gym and takes a snap with her account now over 7500 followers. Returning home, she has a shower when the water goes out. She tries and fails to speak to the landlord when Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) comes to her translating rescue. Unfortunately she’ll have to wait, so in the meantime? She’ll have to use the bidet.

After Emily attends a French class, Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu) gives her some sass about her Instagram account, while Luc (Bruno Gouery) confronts her about the corporate commandments and she’s back in the bad books with everyone. Sylvie, Emily, and Julien (Samuel Arnold) attend a shoot for De L’Heure and they’re greeted by Antoine Lambert (William Abadie). The shoot features a naked woman walking along a bridge with multiple men looking towards her as she becomes every man’s fantasy and desire. When Antoine asks what Emily thinks, she asks if it’s sexy or sexist, but she says it’s seen through the male gaze and that American women won’t respond to it.

Back at her apartment, the plumber says he can’t fix it, but Emily can’t fully understand so she grabs Gabriel to help translate and he needs a part that could take days or weeks. While Emily waits for it to be fixed, she can use Gabriel’s in the meantime. Frustrated with work, Emily meets up with Mindy (Ashley Park) who reads through the commandments and says she’s not surprised that they’re not happy with her.

At Savoir, the group watch the De L’Heure commercial and Emily suggests they let the audience decide with a poll ‘sexy or sexist?’, and Antoine agrees. Emily tries to invite Sylvie to a dinner, but she turns her down so Emily confronts her as to why she doesn’t like her and still invites her anyway.

Emily arrives at Mindy’s party to find many people and immediately feels uncomfortable with everyone speaking French. However, she does meet Fabien (Michel Biel) and the pair begin talking, but also teaching each other French and English. What seems flirty and sensual, Fabien ruins it when he whispers that he likes ‘American pussy’, which makes Emily promptly leave. She returns home, but stops at Gabriel’s restaurant first and she says that she likes Paris, but Paris doesn’t like her…but Gabriel says he likes her!

The next day, Madeline calls Emily to tell her that her social impressions are up 200% since the poll went live, but a lot of people don’t like it. At the office, Emily gifts Luc with a cake in the shape of a penis and Luc and Julien absolutely love it. On Emily’s desk, she finds a box from La Perla, which is from Antoine and the card asks if ‘is it sexy or sexist?’ She continues opening the wrapping to discover some black lingerie.

Overall Thoughts?

The series definitely picked up this episode, but it still hasn’t found its footing yet. I can’t quite place my finger on what it is, but it just doesn’t feel lively enough. Again, I’m comparing it to Younger quite a bit with it being from the same creator and somewhat similar style of show, but it just seems lesser quality? Regardless, I’ll continue watching.

In the second episode, Emily (Lily Collins) is out for a run and listening to a French audio course when she stops to take a picture of a statue. Returning home, Emily makes the same apartment mistake again and Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) opens the door and share some cute banter.

Leaving for work, Emily steps in some dog poo and takes a snap of the owner, only to realise her account has grown by 1200 followers. Arriving at Savoir, Julien (Samuel Arnold) greets her as la plouc, but she promptly uses her translator app to tell him to go fuck himself and he loves it. Emily stops by Sylvie’s (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu) office with some ideas for De L’Heure, but she can’t pronounce it properly and that doesn’t put her off to a good start.

That night, Emily attends a party for Maison Lavaux’s De L’Heure and wears an elegant black dress with a lovely tulle skirt, which is definitely a nod to Carrie Bradshaw from Darren Star’s Sex and the City series. Sylvie and Paul (Arnaud Viard) introduce Emily to Antoine Lambert (William Abadie), who owns Maison Lavaux. She goes into a ramble about her ideas, which Antoine thinks are interesting before he leaves, but Sylvie says you don’t talk about work at a party.

Overlooking the Eiffel Tower, Antoine joins her and puts some perfume on her and there is some absolute steam between them. Well, mostly coming from Antoine and Sylvie observes their exchange.

The next day, Paul informs Emily that Antoine wants her to work on the De L’Heure account when Sylvie interrupts and says she should work on Vaga-Jeune. What’s that you ask? They’re suppositories to promote vaginal wetness in older women. Sylvie also warns Emily for being too friendly with Antoine, and afterwards, Julien informs Emily that Sylvie is Antoine’s mistress.

Emily sends a message to Mindy (Ashley Park) and the pair meet up for dinner. Emily begins to cause a stir when she requests her steak to be cooked longer and it leads to chef coming out…and it’s none other than Gabriel! He suggests she tries it and she ends up loving it.

With her boyfriend set to arrive the next day, Emily visits the markets and the bakery, all the while posting a few snaps and gaining another 3500 followers. She calls Doug who is still in Chicago and he’s not a fan of just being by himself for a week while she’s working. Doug wants Emily to come home otherwise they’re over, so she hangs up on him.

Waking up to the pouring rain, Emily arrives at work and begins working on Vaga-Jeune, learns the vagina is masculine in French, and makes a post on her social media.

The next thing we know, we’re at the Élysée Palace and Carla Bruni sends Emily’s post to Brigitte Macron, the French President’s wife, and she shares it on Twitter.

At a lunch, Sylvie is complaining about Emily to Paul, Luc, and Julien when Paul receives a message from the CEO of Vaga-Jeune about Brigitte’s post. Meanwhile, Mindy sends Emily a message to tell her about the retweet and Paul calls her over to join them and he is thrilled.

Overall Thoughts?

While I definitely becoming more invested, the episode still feels clunky. Again, I’m comparing it to Younger which has the same length episodes and it always seemed to pack so much into 30 minutes, but still have a nice flow. Unfortunately, Emily In Paris just feels choppy and none of the characters stand out just yet, except for Emily obviously, but she has to as she’s the lead. Even that being said, I don’t feel hooked into her character, such as being excited for her being accepted into the group or ending it with her useless and pointless boyfriend. Let’s hope the next episode picks up!
