Hi, Alexandra! Can you tell our readers a bit about yourself?

Hi! I’m the author of eight young adult novels so far, and I’m probably best known for my sci-fi duology The Final Six, my DC Icons novel Black Canary: Breaking Silence, and my debut, Timeless. I’m also a screenwriter, songwriter, and a mom of two!

When did you first discover your love for writing and stories?

I fell in love with stories pretty much from the moment I was out of the womb! I was a bookworm before I could read—as a toddler, I would spend hours combing through picture books and making up my own stories to go with the illustrations. It definitely feels like it was written in the stars that I would become an author. J

Quick lightning round! Tell us:

The first book you ever remember reading: I actually have photos of myself as a toddler reading picture books and Little Golden Books based on the classic Disney movies, like Snow White and So it once again feels like destiny that I ended up getting to write a Disney book myself!

The one that made you want to become an author: Little Women. I read it when I was seven and instantly connected with Jo March.

The one that you can’t stop thinking about: The Seven-Year Slip by Ashley Poston, because it’s my current read and I’m loving it and can’t wait to continue!

Your latest novel, Realm of Wonders, is out now! If you could only describe it in five words, what would they be?

Magical, Spooky, Romantic, Thrilling, Competition

What can readers expect?

We enter Jasmine’s world months after the events of the movie Aladdin, just as her life takes a dramatic turn: her father has died, she is the heir to the throne, but the patriarchal kingdom of Agrabah can’t accept the idea of a young woman taking the sultan’s place. When a male cousin enters the picture and makes a claim for the crown, Jasmine finds herself in the fight of her life—both for her birthright as sultana of Agrabah, but also to protect her kingdom from a dark and supernatural threat. Aladdin also plays a big role, and the deepening relationship between him and Jasmine, with all their ups and downs, was one of my favorite storylines to write.

How did you approach reimagining this Disney Princess?

My main approach was to further develop the character traits we already know and love about Jasmine—her strength and bravery, her quick wit, the way she values people for who they are inside and doesn’t care about wealth or status—and also flesh out her inner life and more vulnerable side. For example, I thought a lot about Jasmine’s childhood: what it must have been like to lose her mother so young, and then be raised by a single father who just so happens to be the sultan, growing up with that weight on her shoulders that unless her father eventually remarries and has a son, one day she’ll be the first female ruler of Agrabah. I put a lot of that backstory into her character, and I think it helped her feel so real for me as I was writing.

Were there any moments or characters you really enjoyed writing or exploring?

I loved exploring Jasmine’s relationship with Aladdin, and what it would look like in reality for an heir to the throne to fall in love with a man from the streets. It was really fun as a writer to dig into the complicated dynamics of their relationship, and of course all the romantic tension and kissing scenes! J

Did you face any particularly challenges? If so, how did you overcome them?

The biggest challenge was probably my ambitious plot! I had a big vision for this story, one that involved multiple connecting realms, and it took a lot of revising for me to feel like I had translated my vision to the page.

What’s next for you?

As soon as I finish launching this book, I’ll be diving into a deadline for a TV pilot I’m writing—an adaptation of one of my books!

Lastly, do you have any book recommendations for our readers?

Yes! I was so lucky to be able to write this novel for Disney’s The Queen’s Council book series, which includes three (so far!) standalone novels, each following a different Disney princess as she rises to power. Emma Theriault’s Rebel Rose (Belle’s story!) launched the series, and Livia Blackburne’s Feather and Flame (Mulan) is Book #2. I absolutely love both books, they are so fantastic and I highly recommend them!

Combining her writing and musical talents, Alexandra Monir recently released a novel in the DC Icons series, Black Canary: Breaking Silence. We recently got to chat with Alexandra about her inspirations, what it was like tackling the DC canon, and what her superhero persona would look like!

Hi Alexandra! Thank you for taking the time to do this interview for The Nerd Daily. Let’s start with you telling us a bit about yourself.

Thank you so much for having me!  I’m an author of YA novels, and I’m also a singer/songwriter. My books include the time-travel romance Timeless, the sci-fi duology The Final Six, and my latest release, the new Black Canary origin story, for which I also wrote music!

Now, what can readers expect from Black Canary: Breaking Silence?

Breaking Silence is an action/adventure with a lot of layers to it: secret identities, twisty mystery, family (and found family) dynamics, a romantic subplot that just might be my favorite love story I’ve written yet, music, and fierce female superheroes!

Were there any challenges in writing characters that have already existed in many different forms in the DC canon?

I found it to be more exciting than anything else, but probably the biggest challenge was sorting through all the different material already out there, all the alternate histories, and trying to narrow down which elements I wanted to include in my story, and where I wanted to try something new for the characters.

How did you bring in your own musical background into writing Breaking Silence?

That was truly one of the most fulfilling parts of this project for me, if not the most fulfilling- getting to return to my musical roots! I wrote three original songs for Black Canary, and each song plays a role in the story. I had the opportunity to record the theme song of the book, “The Black Canary Sings,” with my producer from my pop music days, and you can hear it on Penguin Random House’s SoundCloud!

If you were a superhero, what would your hero name be and what would your costume look like?

Hehe, what a fun question! I love the idea of vanquishing enemies the writerly way, with a pen, so maybe I’d be Wordsmith Warrior or something. I would have to pick a comfy costume, so maybe a pair of track pants and a tank top, but with a fabulous pair of shoes that could double as weaponry if needed, like a spiky heel. (I realize that doesn’t really go with track pants, but I figure we can make it work in this scenario!)

With music being such a big part of this story, were there any particular songs or artists you listened to while working on the book?

The artist I listened to most was Cesaria Evora, a singer who has always moved me more than anyone else. She was Cape Verde’s biggest musical sensation, and she even gets a little hat-tip in the book, in a scene highlighting prominent women of the past. If you like world music or blues, you have to listen to her song “Sodade,” which is just gorgeous and conveys so many feelings in one song.

What do you want readers to take away from Breaking Silence?

I hope the main takeaway is that the real power we need is something each of us already possesses: our voice. It’s about using our voices to speak up for what’s right and to make the world a more equal and better place. That’s something any of us can do, no superhuman skills required!

How have you been balancing your creative life in the chaos of 2020?

Argh, it’s definitely been a challenge! It was hardest in the first few months of the pandemic, when I was on such tight deadlines yet also had to be in 24/7 mommy mode, plus there was all the fear and anxiety around the pandemic itself. I had to pull way too many writing all-nighters during those months! Since then, it’s gotten a lot better in that we’re quarantining with my parents and our part-time nanny and her son, so I feel incredibly grateful to have support around us, and that my son has four other people to interact with besides just his mommy and daddy! The book launch for Canary has also been so different from my other launches- I’ve really missed going on the road and meeting readers. But I’m so grateful to everyone in the online book community, like The Nerd Daily, who is helping to lift up authors like me and share our work at a time when getting the word out is so much more challenging. So thank you!

Lastly, can you tell us about what you are working on in the future?

Amazingly, I get to write another iconic character! I still can’t believe I get to do two back to back.  I recently signed with Disney to write a YA historical fantasy about Princess Jasmine, as the third book in their new series The Queen’s Council, which reimagines the Disney princesses as rulers after the events of the movies. The first in the series is about Belle, Rebel Rose by Emma Theriault, and it just published in November! The second is Mulan written by Livia Blackburne and coming Fall 2021, and then my Jasmine novel will follow in 2022. I’m about to dive into the manuscript now!

It takes a lot to bring your voice into the limelight, especially when there are so many other voices clamouring for attention, but Alexandra Monir brings the voice of the Black Canary to the forefront of the DC Icons collection with Breaking Silence. Part scathing examination of how easy it is to fall into a dystopian world, part finding and fighting for your own voice, Breaking Silence is a great read to get you into the mood to break down the patriarchy.

Dinah Lance just wants to sing. But in a world where the voices of women everywhere have been silenced by the patriarchal Court of Owls, the one thing Dinah doesn’t feel she has is any say in what happens in her life. When a local resistance group strikes at the Court of Owls at the Patriarch’s Ball, Dinah finds she may have more power than she thought. And she intends to use it to right the wrongs that have been done to her and the women in her city.

Breaking Silence is one of those books that when I finished reading, I wanted to buy up pallets of the book and donate them to youth organisations around the world. It may not be perfect (because no book is actually perfect), but it has a strong message and I can guarantee it’ll light the fire for youth out there who want to fight for a better world.

It is easy to determine from reading Breaking Silence that Monir really wanted to write a Black Canary story and she wanted to do the character justice. Dinah Lance is portrayed as a strong teen with a power she is just coming into, but she is also shown to be very human. She has a growing attraction to the new boy in school, she misses her mother who passed away, and she wants to break free from the ridiculously restrictions put on women. The story is written from a very internal POV and we spend a lot of time in Dinah’s head, getting to know her. This felt like the right way to approach the story and bring another level to the sense of isolation of women in this dystopian world.

And while this story is rightfully Dinah’s, most of the other characters suffer from very little build up. That’s not to say they fall totally flat, but I wished for a little more depth. One of the better developed characters was Oliver Queen aka the Green Arrow. At first, I was worried that the inclusion of Oliver as the Green Arrow and the romantic interest for Dinah would take away from the point of the story. I was pleasantly surprised to find that Oliver didn’t detract from Dinah’s story at all. The romance and respect between these two was very sweet and it was nice to see an ultimately positive and realistic relationship blossom over the course of the story.

Is Breaking Silence a wildly original origin story that smashes the tropes seen often in YA? No, but that hardly makes it a disappointing read. The thing about superhero/vigilante stories is the inherent suspension of belief that comes with them. They are outlandish, exaggerated, rely heavily on tropes, and typically are escapism that also house a world of examination of social issues. In that respect, Breaking Silence is no different than the superhero stories that came before it and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. You can’t put the superhero antics of male characters on a pedestal and then tear apart the same antics when it’s a woman in the mask.

Breaking Silence brings together some well-known tropes and gives us an engaging story to read. Monir has taken Black Canary and given her a modern origin story and purpose. If you are looking for a good read that has the depth and heart that makes superhero stories so enduring, pick up a copy of Black Canary: Breaking Silence.

Black Canary: Breaking Silence is available from Amazon, Book Depository, and other good book retailers, like your local bookstore, as of December 29th 2020.

Synopsis | Goodreads

THE HANDMAID’S TALE meets the DC universe in this breathtaking, thrilling origin story of Black Canary. Her voice is her weapon, and in a near future world where women have no rights, she won’t hesitate to use everything she has to fight back.

Dinah Lance was seven years old when she overheard the impossible: the sound of a girl singing. It was something she was never meant to hear—not in her lifetime, and not in Gotham City, taken over by the Court of Owls. The sinister organization rules Gotham as a patriarchal dictatorship, all the while spreading their influence like a virus across the globe.

Now seventeen, Dinah can’t forget that haunting sound, and she’s beginning to discover that her own voice is just as powerful. But singing is forbidden—a one-way stop to a certain death sentence. Can she balance her father’s desire to keep her safe, a blossoming romance with mysterious new student Oliver Queen, and her own desire to help other women and girls rise up and finally be heard? And will her voice be powerful enough to destroy the Court of Owls once and for all?

Balancing epic and intensely personal stakes, bestselling author Adam Silvera’s Infinity Son is a gritty, fast-paced adventure about two brothers caught up in a magical war generations in the making.

Growing up in New York, brothers Emil and Brighton always idolized the Spell Walkers—a vigilante group sworn to rid the world of specters. While the Spell Walkers and other celestials are born with powers, specters take them, violently stealing the essence of endangered magical creatures.

Brighton wishes he had a power so he could join the fray. Emil just wants the fighting to stop. The cycle of violence has taken a toll, making it harder for anyone with a power to live peacefully and openly. In this climate of fear, a gang of specters has been growing bolder by the day.

Then, in a brawl after a protest, Emil manifests a power of his own—one that puts him right at the heart of the conflict and sets him up to be the heroic Spell Walker Brighton always wanted to be.

Brotherhood, love, and loyalty will be put to the test, and no one will escape the fight unscathed.

Can a girl who risks her life for books and an alien who loves forbidden pop music work together to save humanity?

Two years ago, a misunderstanding between the leaders of Earth and the invading Ilori resulted in the deaths of one-third of the world’s population.

Seventeen-year-old Janelle “Ellie” Baker survives in an Ilori-controlled center in New York City. Deemed dangerously volatile because of their initial reaction to the invasion, humanity’s emotional transgressions are now grounds for execution. All art, books and creative expression are illegal, but Ellie breaks the rules by keeping a secret library. When a book goes missing, Ellie is terrified that the Ilori will track it back to her and kill her.

Born in a lab, M0Rr1S (Morris) was raised to be emotionless. When he finds Ellie’s illegal library, he’s duty-bound to deliver her for execution. The trouble is, he finds himself drawn to human music and in desperate need of more. They’re both breaking the rules for love of art—and Ellie inspires the same feelings in him that music does.

Ellie’s—and humanity’s—fate rests in the hands of an alien she should fear. M0Rr1S has a lot of secrets, but also a potential solution—thousands of miles away. The two embark on a wild and dangerous road trip with a bag of books and their favorite albums, all the while making a story and a song of their own that just might save them both.

The sequel to The Final Six.

As Naomi lifts off into space and away from a rapidly deteriorating Earth, she watches the world fade away, and along with it Leo, a Final Six contestant she grew close to during training. Leaving Earth behind is hard, but what’s ahead, on Europa, could be worse. The International Space Training Camp continues to hide the truth about what happened to the last group of astronauts who attempted a similar colonization but failed mysteriously. With one shot—at this mission and to Europa—Naomi is determined to find out if there is alien life on Europa before she and her crew get there.

Leo, back on Earth, has been working with renegade scientist Dr. Greta Wagner, who promises to fly him to space where he can essentially latch on to Naomi’s ship. And if Wagner’s hypothesis is right, it isn’t a possibility of coming in contact with extraterrestrial life on Europa—it’s a definite. With Naomi unaware of what awaits, it’s up to Leo to find and warn her and the others.

With all the pieces of their journey finally clicking into place, everything else starts to fall apart. A storm threatens to interfere with Leo’s takeoff, a deadly entity makes itself known to the Final Six, and the questions the ISTC has been avoiding about the previous failed mission get answered in the worst way possible. If the dream was to establish a habitable domain on Europa… the Final Six are about to enter a nightmare.

A decade ago near Chicago, five teenagers defeated the otherworldly enemy known as the Dark One, whose reign of terror brought widespread destruction and death. The seemingly un-extraordinary teens—Sloane, Matt, Ines, Albie, and Esther—had been brought together by a clandestine government agency because one of them was fated to be the “Chosen One,” prophesized to save the world. With the goal achieved, humankind celebrated the victors and began to mourn their lost loved ones.

Ten years later, though the champions remain celebrities, the world has moved forward and a whole, younger generation doesn’t seem to recall the days of endless fear. But Sloane remembers. It’s impossible for her to forget when the paparazzi haunt her every step just as the Dark One still haunts her dreams. Unlike everyone else, she hasn’t moved on; she’s adrift—no direction, no goals, no purpose. On the eve of the Ten Year Celebration of Peace, a new trauma hits the Chosen: the death of one of their own. And when they gather for the funeral at the enshrined site of their triumph, they discover to their horror that the Dark One’s reign never really ended.

Perfect for fans of The Illuminae Files and The 100, in this heart-racing sequel to The Final Six the teen astronauts must figure out the truth about Europa before it’s too late.

Alexandra Monir is an Iranian-American author and recording artist. She is the author of the hit novel The Final Six, its brand-new sequel, The Life Below, and four other published young adult novels, including the bestselling time-travel romance, Timeless.

We had the pleasure of chatting to Alexandra about her new novel, writing, what’s next for her, and more!

Hi Alexandra! Can you tell us a little about yourself?

Hi!! I’m the author of six YA novels and counting, and there’s nothing I love more than storytelling. I broke into publishing with my time-travel romance, Timeless, and my latest is the sci-fi thriller, The Final Six, and its just-released sequel, The Life Below. I’m also a singer/songwriter, and mom to my favorite toddler on the planet.

You initially started your career off as a singer. Has writing always been a passion of yours and when did you decide you wanted to pursue it?

I’ve actually been writing for as long as I’ve been singing, so although music was the dream I chased after first, writing and publishing my debut novel felt a lot like coming home—a full-circle return to my childhood passion for books! I was 22 when I decided to finally give it a shot, and it was all thanks to the idea for Timeless popping into my head. Up until that point, anytime I came up with a story idea, I immediately tried to develop it as a film or TV pitch (I was in the showbiz world, after all!) but Timeless was the first idea where I just knew it had to be a book.

The Life Below is the sequel to The Final Six and the finale in your duology. For those who haven’t read The Final Six, what can readers expect?

So, The Final Six is about a group of twenty-four teens from around the world, who have been handpicked by the United Nations and the international space agencies to compete for six spots on a one-way mission to Jupiter’s moon, Europa—to find a new home for humanity after Earth is largely destroyed by climate change. The Final Six ends with the selection of the chosen crew, and their launch into space…while one finalist who didn’t make the cut embarks on a rogue mission of his or her own! While the first gives you all the fun and action of the competition and space training camp, the sequel really ramps up the stakes, thrusting our characters into the dangers of space as they make their way to a new world.

Where did the inspiration for the duology come from?

The moment of inspiration was one of those magical moments in a writer’s life, where an idea just hits you like a lightning bolt! I was listening to a radio interview with an aspiring astronaut who had applied for this experimental private mission, MarsOne, that was in the news at the time. She had a family and a full life on Earth, but was willing to leave it all behind for the chance to go to Mars. I was blown away by the idea that someone would choose to give up the only life they’d ever known for this risky colonization experiment…and that’s when the idea struck me: What if it wasn’t a choice? What if, due to climate change destroying much of Earth, people were drafted to space, just like people have been drafted into war? As soon as those pieces of the idea flew into my mind, I was off and running!

Is there a certain character, scene, or piece of dialogue you really enjoyed writing?

I really loved every conversation I got to write between Naomi and Leo, but the scenes I’m probably most proud of are the climactic action scenes. I really had to stretch my writing muscles there, and when I was finally able to translate onto the page the cinematic scenes I was envisioning in my mind, it felt like such a win!

What’s your writing process like?

It all depends on which stage of the process I’m at. If it’s drafting, and the book is due soon, you can find me writing well into the night, sometimes pulling 12-15-hour writing days! But if I’m editing or in the early days of writing a new book, I work a much more normal schedule and can even bounce back and forth between projects. I’m a Gemini, so I like to stay busy with multiple books!

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?

My biggest piece of advice is to finish what you start. It can often be the hardest advice to follow, though, because life constantly throws distractions and interruptions at us—and even without that, so many of us perfectionists can get mired in polishing the first few chapters and have a hard time moving past that and actually finishing the draft. BUT I have learned that the only way to make something great is to start out with a rough draft, so try to take the pressure off of that first draft being any good, and just write till the end. After that, you can have fun rewriting that diamond in the rough to make it shine!

What’s next for you?

I’m thrilled to be writing the official YA novel for the DC Comics superhero, Black Canary! This will be the 5th novel in their DC Icons series with Random House, and it’s tentatively set to publish in December of this year!

Lastly, do you have any book recommendations for our readers?

Yes! This is one to put on your TBR for May: Lobizona by Romina Garber is a thrilling fantasy with themes that could not be more timely for our own world. It’s getting rave reviews already!
