Our handsome demon-hunting Winchester brothers are back for the 13th season of The CW’s hit series, Supernatural, and they’re adding parenting to their list of skills!
The previous season ended with a fiery finale leaving Castiel (Misha Collins) dead, Mary (Samantha Smith) trapped in an alternate world, and Lucifer’s son born into the world. At the end of the finale, Sam (Jared Padalecki) discovered the newborn to be an aged-up version of Jack (Alexander Calvert), which will now cause the Winchester’s to don their parenting caps whilst they play parent to the actual spawn of Satan himself.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, co-showrunner Robert Singer said the arrival of Jack will help to refocus the series after the boys just spent the last season raising hell. “We just felt there’s so much opportunity with Jack. It’s a big swing again, but somehow we always manage to keep the show grounded in its own reality.”
Co-showrunner Andrew Dabb also spoke about the shift in the series. “Last season was about the guys being kids, and this season is about being parents, to a degree,” Dabb explained. “To have [Sam and Dean] confronted by this kid who is at once scary and charming gives us a chance to show a different side of the guys, and that’s always a great thing, especially 13 seasons in.”
He continued on the two Winchesters as parents, “If Dean had a kid, what would that look like? If Sam had a kid, what would that look like? The joke is that it’s My Two Dads, Hell Edition.”
But despite this newcomer, the brothers will still be experiencing the usual loss that continues to stare them in the face, especially with Crowley, Castiel, and Mary gone. Jensen Ackles explained it to be a “vicious cycle of loss and grief” for the boys. However, Padalecki said this season won’t be “going full-mope.”
What else can we expect from the upcoming season? Well a Scooby Doo-themed episode for starters, along with the eventual return of Castiel (in some shape or form), and testing the waters for its spin-off series and a long-awaited animated episode.
Catch the Season 13 premiere of Supernatural at 8pm ET on The CW.
