Well Shadowhunters, the second half of season three is almost here after the mid-season finale all the way back in May 2018. However, while we’ve got a few episodes to watch, the series was cancelled by Freeform in June, which caused a major uproar with fans of the series and saw fans across the world to rally together in hopes the decision would be reversed or at least reconsidered. With the unexpected cancellation, Freeform announced to the shocked cast and fans that they will be making a 2-hour series finale to end the show, answer all the burning questions, and ultimately give the fans what they deserve.
So with 10 episodes left plus a 2-hour series finale, what even happened in the first half of season 3? Well, here’s a recap! You can also check out our full episode recaps by clicking the episode titles.
3.01 On Infernal Ground
Clary received her official rune and discovered her weapon of choice; Lilith gained followers by creating demons; Magnus lost the title of High Warlock of Brooklyn, while Alec passed on a new job opportunity; Simon received a mark from the Seelie Queen; and lastly, Jace has been suffering from nightmares filled with Jonathan Morgenstern.
3.02 The Powers That Be
The warlocks had some trouble with their magic due to someone (Lilith) flooding the ley lines with demonic magic; Jace and Clary found themselves on a double date with Simon and Maia; and Simon also found out just what his Daylighter mark can do.
3.03 What Lies Beneath
We see quite a bit of Magnus and Alec with Maryse coming to visit; Raphael’s vampire prisoner escapes; Izzy and Clary go to protect a girl from the Owl; and finally, the Owl is revealed to be Jace…
3.04 Thy Soul Instructed
Simon finds a new roomie in the form of Jordan Kyle; Raphael gets kidnapped by Heidi and rescued by Izzy and Clary; and Jace has trouble remembering things due to Lilith constantly taking control of him to do her bidding as the Owl.
3.05 Stronger Than Heaven
Magnus and Alec found themselves in different places about their future together; Izzy went on a date with Charlie; Clary summoned Ithuriel for information on Jace only to get Ithuriel killed and a slice of her soul taken; and Lilith used Clary’s soul in an elixir to make Jace forget his love for Clary so he can become her soldier completely.
3.06 A Window Into An Empty Room
Things got a little crazy with the vampire Simon created; a deruned Maryse Lightwood visited her children; Alec and Magnus continued to face issues; we met Brother Zachariah; Luke’s police partner Ollie became one of Lilith’s disciples; and lastly, the gang discovered Jace is the Owl.
3.07 Salt In The Wound
The group learned just who was after them after Jace severely injured Clary; we discovered Maia and Jordan Kyle previously dated, which saw a series of flashbacks shared between the two and that it was Jordan who accidentally turned Maia; Simon and Luke found the Church of Talto and luckily, Simon had his mark to save their asses; and lastly, the Shadowhunters manage to trap Jace with the aid of a stolen object from Idris, but Clary is arrested when they find her near Valentine’s grave that Jace had been digging up.
3.08 A Heart of Darkness
With the help of Magnus, Isabelle and Alec enter Jace’s mind to find the Jace they know; Simon, Maia, and Kyle team up to investigate the Church of Talto, which ends with Maia packing a bag and leaving after Kyle trying to talk to her about their past; the Soul-Sword is used on Clary and she reveals what happened at Lake Lyn and bringing Jace back from the dead, and Clary is sentenced to death; Lilith pays a visit to the Seelie Queen and goes on a killing spree as the Mark of Cain is the only thing that can kill her; and lastly, Lilith retrieves Jace from Magnus’s apartment but she won’t do any extreme harm to Magnus as she doesn’t want to start a war with his father.
3.09 Familia Ante Omnia and 3.10 Erchomai (Two-Part Finale)
With Clary sentenced to death, she offers to bring Valentine back to life, which she does by creating a rune, but naturally Valentine escapes until Clary later deactivates the rune and he returns to the dead. However, Clary is soon taken by Jace. Meanwhile, Alec and Magnus work together to find a way to break Lilith’s control over Jace and pay a visit to the High Warlock of Brooklyn, Lorenzo Rey, as the spell requires Magnus to channel other warlocks’ powers. Magnus eventually travels to Edom to visit his father, Asmodeus, and it saw Magnus trade his magic in exchange for freeing Jace of the demon possessing him. Thanks to Heidi, Simon ends up almost draining his sister, but Isabelle arrives in time to stop him. He later speaks to her about what happened, except he Encanto’s his mother to believe he died. Fights break out with Luke and Maryse searching for Clary and with Alec dying Magnus performs the spell to rid Jace of the possession, which means Magnus’ powers are now gone. Lilith binds Clary to Jonathan, so as long as Clary lives, so does Jonathan. With that, Clary appears as though she will kill herself, but she blinds Lilith with her sun rune while Simon rushes for Jonathan’s body and it sees Lilith go to attack him. Thanks to the Mark of Cain, she dies. At the end of the episode, Jace can’t find Clary and Jonathan.
