Shadowhunters Recap: 3.04 ‘Thy Soul Instructed’

Shadowhunters 3.04 Thy Soul Instructed

Last week on Shadowhunters, the episode saw quite a bit of Magnus and Alec with Maryse coming to visit (but we won’t get into that again because apparently things can be misunderstood); Raphael’s vampire prisoner escapes; Izzy and Clary go to protect a girl from the Owl; and finally, the Owl is revealed to be Jace…

Lilith’s Right Hand Man

A blank faced Jace visits Lilith’s opulent apartment, and she’s upset that he didn’t get Morgan, the girl he attack in the previous episode. Unable to bear children, Lilith was happy when Valentine asked for her blood to dose an unborn Jonathan. Continuing to repeat her mantra “nothing will stop me from bringing my son back”, she asks him to take care of Morgan. Lilith also demands Jace brings her 33 disciples to bring Jonathan back, and then she will kill Jace.

Jace returns to the Institute and seems to be in a trance until Clary touches him, and he’s beyond confused as the last thing Jace remembers is fighting “Jonathan”. Clary wants to tell everyone and get Jace some help, but he doesn’t want to because Clary will be in trouble with the Clave for using Raziel’s wish.

In breaking news, there seems to be an older Shadowhunter at the Institute who is the new head of security! Can you believe!? Moving on. With Morgan being held at the Institute, it seems her cells have now become demonic after her encounter with the Owl.

Alec questions Clary again about why his parabatai rune disappeared and if she would tell him if something was wrong with Jace, but she avoids answering. Alec interrupts Jace who is staring at himself in the mirror to see how Jace is doing. Alec thinks that Jace could be suffering from a mental illness as Celine Herondale’s medical records show she suffered from it. Naturally, this angers Jace.

Magnus later notices Alec’s concern about Jace and they share a moment before Magnus offers to help Alec with the Owl.

On The Hunt For Roomies

Maia is angry at Luke for kicking Simon out, and it seems Simon has been sleeping in his truck. On his way to look for apartments, he walks right in front of a bike messenger, who serves and winds up in a pile of garbage. He introduces himself as Kyle (actual name Jordan Kyle) when Simon offers to help him out by giving him a ride.

Jordan takes Simon back to his apartment and the pair bond over guitars, which winds up with Kyle revealing he needs a roommate. Simon seems interested, but wants some privacy due to his bloody diet. Maia thinks Simon is stupid for not taking the apartment, so he decides to move in with Jordan, and brings his own fridge stocked full of blood.

Towards the end of the episode, Jordan and Simon play video games when Jordan receives a call. It turns out the call is from Luke as he didn’t like how things ended, but Jordan tells him to lay off as Simon belongs to the Praetor now.

A Little Vampire Trouble

Heidi the escaped vampire from last week’s episode seems to be an adaptation of Maureen from City of Fallen Angels. She finds a blood donor truck and starts guzzling blood before killing the attendant. Clary and Izzy then check out the blood donor truck that was attacked, and they realise the attendant must be dead.

Heidi drops by Simon’s old place at the Jade Wolf and tries on his clothes and goes through his things until she’s attacked by Raphael. Somehow she manages to get the upper hand on the older vampire and doses him with what looks like the dagget root.

Wielding a stake, Heidi has Raphael shackled on a rooftop and she tells her story of always wanting to be a vampire. Apparently Raphael stole her body from the morgue to resurrect her and be his guinea pig. Raphael begs and apologises as he only wanted to find out how they could walk in the daylight. It turns out Heidi had a little fun with the attendant, which Clary and Izzy discover he’s been turned.

After a struggle, Clary manages to stab him in the back of the head straight through the mouth. Afterwards, they hear screaming from the roof, which is where Raphael is and he’s starting to burn from the sun. They get to him in time and he claims he was just trying to help them out and that he doesn’t know who the vampire is.

Raphael tries to cover his tracks when Izzy catches him as she knew that what happened to Raphael was about revenge, not just an attack. He comes clean, but Izzy is upset and disappointed in him. She won’t report his crimes to the Clave if he leaves New York.

The Owl Visits The Institute

Jace visits Luke to find out more about his mother and he tells him that she saw things that weren’t there and talked to herself. However, Luke tells him to not forget to hang on to the good.

He then takes a walk along the water and rips off the Morgenstern ring before Lilith approaches him. He doesn’t recognise her until she commands him to sleep, and she demands to know how he broke free—Clary. Lilith walks off to take care of Clary, while Jace is back on task.

Owl-Jace returns to the Institute and I have a serious question, how does Jace’s clothes change? Please explain. He finds Morgan in the cell and begins speaking in Latin when she’s thrown backwards against the wall. Jace disappears before Magnus, Alec and Clary reach the holding cells and discover Morgan on the floor, but Magnus announces she is free of demonic possession.

Jace wakes up in his bed confused when Clary comes in and confesses he don’t know how he got back to the Institute.

At the end of the episode, Magnus receives a knock on his door, and outside is Lilith wanting help from Magnus due to a complicated problem…

Final Thoughts?

This episode definitely felt more balanced, and it was good to finally get a little more background on Lilith with her character being the villain for the season. Hopefully we will find out more soon on her control over Jace, and if it does have anything to do with Raziel’s wish and exactly how it happened.

It was enjoyable to see another book character to be brought into the series, and I am not opposed to his Australian accent and background, because well, I am Australian so it’s great to see! I did forget that Chai was Australian, so it was a bit of a shock when he spoke and also name dropped Brisbane!

It will also be interesting to see if Izzy does reach out to Charlie the mundane because she really deserves to have something good going for her. The only issue I have with that however is the potential for his character to be killed off and then devastating Izzy.
