Releasing on September 1st 2020, Lauren North’s second novel One Step Behind is sure to make an impact on readers who enjoy a suspenseful thriller. North is an up-and-coming suspense author who has an amazing foundation when it comes to her work. In her debut novel, The Perfect Son, North created so many different twists and turns that the reader never really knew where they were being taken, and the same rings true for One Step Behind. The plot in this new novel is well thought out and the research that has gone into creating this novel is evident as the reader makes their way through this suspenseful book about an emergency room doctor who is being stalked. Dr. Jenna Lawson has been living in terror for almost a year, which has impacted not only herself, but her husband and two children as well. While Jenna is at work trying to distract herself from the hell she has been living, her stalker ends up on the bed in front of her and she is tasked with saving his life. After Jenna does save her stalkers life and he ends up in a medically induced coma, she becomes obsessed with learning about him and ends up down her own path of destruction leaving her with more questions than answers and more things broken instead of fixed.

As the story progresses, the reader learns about a second narrator named Sophie, who is the stalker’s sister. North tells the story through Jenna in the present, as well as Sophie in both the past and the present so the reader can learn more about Jenna’s stalker through his sister’s eyes. Two very distinct characters have been created and their stories are intertwined in a way that leaves the reader constantly guessing what is going to happen next. Both Jenna and Sophie are unique and each have their own voice so that the reader will never be confused as to who is narrating at a particular moment. North keeps the reader in the dark until she wants the reader to learn something new and because of that she creates an excellent air of suspense throughout One Step Behind. There are so many twists and turns throughout that the reader will have a difficult time trying to figure out what is really going on, which is perfect for a suspense novel.

North has written yet another brilliant novel that is bound to keep readers entertained and guessing what is going to happen next. As this is North’s second novel, I cannot wait to see what she writes next. Her prose flows elegantly creating a smooth reading experience that will leave readers wanting more from her. One Step Behind is an easy to read novel that most readers can fly through in a weekend because you’ll just want to know what is going to happen next. This up-and-coming suspense author is bound to make an impression on readers and have readers lining up to check out what she does next.

One Step Behind  is available from Amazon, Book Depository, and other good book retailers, like your local bookstore, as of September 1st 2020.
