As far as unconventional reads go, this one might be up there on the list of “books I’d never thought I’d have a blast reading.” But have a blast, I did. Bee a Good Human is a collection of Ali Beckman’s wonderfully weird and exceptionally witty Instagram posts that include dead bugs. Now, disclaimer: Beckman only uses dead bugs she found, was sent or purchased, so there’s no murder behind the scenes, and it’s even reiterated in the foreword of the book. Beckman’s Instagram @soflytaxidermy (also a pun, we love to see it) has over 178K followers and is, dare I say, one of the most creative accounts I’ve seen in years. From quirky photos taken of honey dripping over a ripped-up piece of paper to a “conversation” between a butterfly and a piece of butter next to a fly (are you grinning yet?), this collection of Beckman’s post is a quick and easy read that nevertheless reminds you of what the world would be without pollinators and how much we rely on them without knowing it.

In a way, these kinds of collections are my favourite: where puns abound—puns that you are a bit bummed that you weren’t the first person to think of them—and you still learn something or gain a new perspective on what it is you’re doing on the daily without noticing. Sure, there a few photos where I had to avert my eyes (arachnophobia is no joke) but overall, what sounds like a pretty out there concept, works surprisingly well.

Each photo is either inspirational, encouraging or at the very least, guaranteed to make you smile. It’s a lovely collection that will make a great gift to someone who’s perhaps bad at taking compliments but deserves to hear them nonetheless. I can also see dads going crazy over the puns in here, so, you know – keep this in mind if you’re ever in need of a present for your parents!

Whether you’re in the market for an unconventional yet highly entertaining read or a long-time follower of the author’s uplifting Instagram, Bee A Good Human: A Pollinator’s Guide to Life is sure to make you crack a smile or two!

Bee A Good Human: A Pollinator’s Guide to Life is available from Amazon, Book Depository, and other good book retailers, like your local bookstore, as of May 4th 2021.

Synopsis | Goodreads

Combining inspiration, humour, and entomology, Instagram artist Ali Beckman (@SoFlyTaxidermy) is the internet’s go-to gal for bug-related content that makes you a happier human.

Beckman’s witty comics, which use actual insects in everyday situations, illustrate the importance of pollinators as well as body positivity and mental health awareness. Beyond bugs, Beckman’s art speaks to the value of self-love as she shares a narrative of growth and finding confidence within.
