GLOW is a Netflix original TV show by the same people that brought you Orange is the New Black and it follows a women’s wrestling TV show where a group of actresses are set to star in a new show where they pretend to wrestle. This show is all about female power and it tackles so many other important issues. So, if you haven’t watched it already, here are 10 reasons to watch GLOW!
“Usually, in this industry, it’s every man for himself, and it’s almost always a man telling you your ass is too fat at the same time he’s trying to grope it. And having a woman in charge instead of that Sackballs guy? This is as good as it gets.” – Ruth
1. Female Power
This show has a female heavy cast as GLOW is all about women fighting to be seen and heard. We have Ruth (Alison Brie) who wants a role where she is in control and we have Debbie (Betty Gilpin) who wants to produce the show and work alongside the male directors and producers. This show is also about the women of GLOW supporting each other and having each other’s backs.
2. The 80’s
Who doesn’t love the 80s? The style, the music, the hair, and the vibe. GLOW has all of these. You will get to see these ladies in LA and Vegas during the late 80s. I’m talking lots of hairspray, eyeshadow, leotards, and all around craziness.
3. The Music
The songs in GLOW are so epic and you will discover some new music (if you weren’t around back then) and the music is always perfectly suited to the moment on screen.
4. It’s Different From Other Shows
There’s not many shows about female wrestling in the 80s, so thiss show is unique and will hook you in. It is very character driven and you will start to care about all of them (even the arrogant and douchey director).
5. A Diverse Cast
These females come in all shapes, sizes, ethnicities, and from different backgrounds. We have an African-American curvy single mother, a curvy female from a family of wrestlers, a woman who dresses as a wolf, the ‘barbie’ doll hardworking mother, and so many other powerful women.
6. Tackles Important Issues
GLOW addresses parenting, sexual harassment, acceptance, homophobia, racism, money problems, beauty standards, gender inequality, and so many other important topics.
7. Wrestling
Although these women only fake wrestle you get to see how much work goes into staging these fights. You will learn some epic and interesting things about this industry and gain some respect for people doing this in real life. The Netflix show is based on a much older TV show where all the women actually did all the fake wrestling, which can also be seen in GLOW.
8. Exploring Stereotypes
All the women’s wrestling alter egos are very strongly influenced by stereotypes. We see many of these women struggle with this and trying to find the line between comical and offensive.
9. A Variety of Relationships
GLOW has all types of relationships. It has a female/female romance, a romance with a significant age gap, divorced parents, a marriage with a big secret, and so many more. There will be plenty of ships that you will be rooting for, they will make you swoon and cry. Although there are a number of different relationships they are not the focus of the TV show, which is very refreshing.
10. It’s Funny But Meaningful
GLOW does an amazing job of blending humour with hard hitting topics. You will be laughing through teary eyes.
So, now go open Netflix and watch this show. You will want to kick some serious butt once you’re done.
