For fans of the popular Netflix television series such as Narcos and Breaking Bad, Queen of the South is quickly becoming more popular after making its debut on Netflix this year! The series was originally produced by USA Network in 2016, and the first season has since been added on Netflix.
In this action packed drama, Theresa Mendoza meets the love of her life, El Guero, a bright-eyed, handsome man who just happens to be working for one of the most infamous drug cartels in Mexico, the Vargas Cartel. Theresa is swept into a world of riches, love and danger with her new boyfriend, however the luscious lifestyle doesn’t last for long. Theresa is forced to flee from the cartel, with nothing but an old notebook and her intuition by her side, hoping to seek refuge, illegally in America.
The full 13 episodes chronicles her struggle for freedom within the close grasps of famous cartel leaders, who will stop at nothing to keep their businesses booming and their secrets hidden. Theresa confides in an unlikely companion, taking out their enemies one by one until Theresa is safe again.
Not only is Theresa Mendoza trying to save herself from the personal vengeance of the cartel leaders but she finds herself caught in between the ever-growing drug war spanning from Mexico to America. Season one takes a dramatic and dark look at the life of a young girl running from the most powerful people in Mexico, who seemingly have their eyes everywhere.
Theresa slowly unfolds the secrets of the cartel, in the notebook left to her by her late boyfriend, risking not only her life but the hierarchy of each individual cartel. Theresa has information on each cartel, so does that make her friend or foe to the others?
Theresa has the uncanny ability to transfer her fear into motivation and power, making her a force to be reckoned with throughout the drug war. Truly a modern heroine. Faced against other powerful women, much like Cersei Lannister for GOT fans, it is the battle of the fittest, turning stereotypes on their heads and watching powerful women take a stance in the drug trade.
This series was originally released in Spanish, based off of the global best-selling novel “La Reina Del Sur” by Arturo Pèrez-Reverte, and it was then adapted for American television and later released on Netflix. The second season has already aired, but we’re waiting for it to come to Netflix! Recently, Queen of the South was renewed for a third season.
This series stars: Alice Braga (I Am Legend), Veronica Falcón, Peter Gadiot (Once Upon a Time), Joaquim de Almeida, Hemky Madera, Justina Machado (The Purge: Anarchy and Six Feet Under), as well as Jon-Michael Ecker (Narcos).
