Griff and Mal (and their childhood friend Alys, who doesn’t appear in the chapter below) are the descendants of heroes, and the weight of that legacy has shaped each of them differently. Griff wants to be the knight his father was, although some part of him knows deep down that it doesn’t really suit him; Mal, on the other hand, works for their dead parents’ enemies because they pay the best and don’t ask a lot of questions.
In this chapter, Mal asks Griff to join him on a “business trip” to a notoriously haunted swamp after a long period in which the two have hardly spoken. Why they fought isn’t nearly as important as the gulf of distance that stepping away from each other has created, which has continued to shape them both in many ways. The “business trip” Mal proposes offers a chance for them to finally address the root of their long-ago conflict in an isolated situation, and even though they’re unhappy with each other, they (and Alys) each privately want to resolve the issue and go back to the way things were when they were younger. And while maybe it can never be exactly like it was after all the mistakes and choices they’ve made, the adventure Griff agrees to take gives them a chance to figure out how to fit together again.”
