Vampires are on the rise once more and the latest creation to fuel your vamp obsession comes from Netflix. The new original series, V Wars, stars Ian Somerhalder in the lead role and many vamp fans will know him from The Vampire Diaries.
Adapted from the comic series by Jonathan Maberry and Alan Robinson, V Wars follows Dr. Luther Swann (Ian Somerhalder) as he enters a world of untold horror when a mysterious disease transforms his best friend, Michael Fayne (Adrian Holmes), into a murderous predator who feeds on other humans.
As the disease spreads and more people are transformed, society fractures into opposing camps pitting normal people against the growing number of these “vampires.” Swann races against time to understand what’s happening, while Fayne rises to become the powerful underground leader of the vampires.
At Supanova Comic Con & Gaming in Melbourne Australia in April 2019, Somerhalder spoke about the series.
This show is incredibly relevant right now and couldn’t be more timely, in my opinion. The show deals with so much of what is staring us in the face in our everyday: disease, borders, politics, fear, confusion, media, and ill will. Now imagine this with crazed and hungry, murderous, newly-formed vampires running around. My character, Dr. Luther Swann, happens to be a leading researcher of infectious disease and unfortunately stumbles upon one that gives us a one-way ticket into this world.
Somerhalder’s wife, Nikki Reed, stars alongside him in the new series. Reed is best known for playing Rosalie Cullen in Twilight and she is also the one to thank for Somerhalder starring in the series as he initially turned down the role three times.
I said no like three different times. It just didn’t seem like the right move to dial into another vampire show…Once I dove into the books and the comics, I realised the level of I.T. and science in the story. V Wars isn’t about supernaturals, it’s more about science and society, about relationships and love. It deals with the stuff that we’re all dealing with now: borders, racism, medicine, food, security.
The series stars Ian Somerhalder (The Vampire Diaries), Adrian Holmes (Arrow), Jacky Lai (Shadowhunters), Peter Outerbridge (The Umbrella Academy), Kyle Breitkopf (Barskins), Laura Vandervoort (Jigsaw), and Kimberly Sue Murray (Crimson Peak).
V Wars premieres December 5th on Netflix with 10 episodes.
