The talented Idris Elba stars in Netflix’s newest Original series, Turn Up Charlie, which follows a struggling DJ turned ‘manny’.
Turn Up Charlie centers on the titular Charlie (Idris Elba), a struggling DJ and eternal bachelor, who is given a final chance at success when he reluctantly becomes a ‘manny’ to Gabby (Frankie Hervey), a problem-child daughter of famous best friend, Sara.
Sara (Piper Perabo) is a superstar DJ, feminist icon and vivacious trendsetter who has chosen to abandon the chaotic and exciting life she lived in America, to put roots down in London in an attempt to give her badly behaved daughter more stability and normality. Her daughter Gabrielle, or Gabby, is wise beyond her years. Neglected by her career-driven parents, Gabrielle pushes the boundaries — and the sanity of her nannies — to the extreme, in order to get her mum and dad’s attention. Her spiky retorts, mischievous adventures and epic tantrums hide a lonely young girl with a distorted view of reality.
JJ Feild plays Hollywood actor David, a North London boy done good, David is ambitious and hardworking, but his return to his hometown brings new opportunities and uncertainties in equal measure.
Fun fact, Elba actually started out as a DJ in East London clubs before breaking out on stage, television, and films. He returned to being a DJ last year with sets in London and performances at New York’s Output. He was also a resident DJ at Hi Ibiza, where he performed with the Mambo Brothers and Bob Sinclar, amongst others.
The eight-part series is co-produced by Elba’s Green Door Pictures and Reich’s Brown Eyed Boy Productions, with Elba and Reich serving as executive producers alongside Tristram Shapeero (Community). Shapeero directs the series with Matt Lipsey. Martin Joyce and Ana Garanito serve as co-executive producers.
